Trump, Putin to meet in Alaska on August 15

Trump says he, Putin agree 'war between Israel-Iran should end'

New Delhi, Aug 09: In a move that could redefine the course of the Russia-Ukraine war, US President Donald Trump will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska next Friday, 15 August, for their first face-to-face talks in six years, the BBC and international media reports. The summit comes after Moscow ignored Trump’s deadline to accept a ceasefire, and amid proposals that could see Ukraine surrender territory to Russia.

Announcing the meeting on social media, US President Donald Trump called it “highly anticipated” and hinted at “some swapping of territories… to the betterment of both.” BBC quoting CBS News says the White House’s draft plan would formalise Russian control of some occupied areas. Kyiv has yet to respond, while Europe has been left off the guest list.

The Kremlin confirmed Putin’s trip to US soil, noting it would be his first such visit since relations collapsed over the annexation of Crimea in 2014. Aides say Russia has already invited Donald Trump to Moscow for follow-up talks.

The Alaska summit caps months of quiet diplomacy: an initial call in February, ministerial meetings in Saudi Arabia, peace framework discussions in March, multiple visits to Moscow by Trump envoy Steve Witkoff, and trilateral talks in Turkey.

The ceasefire deadline expired on 8 August, triggering Trump’s announcement. Alaska has hosted high-stakes diplomacy before, including US–China exchanges in 2021. All eyes will be on this meeting with one question: will it reshape global security?

India strategic partner with whom we engage in full, frank dialogue: State Department

New York/Washington, Aug 8: India is a strategic partner with whom the US engages in a “full and frank” dialogue and President Donald Trump has been very clear with New Delhi on his concerns over its purchase of Russian oil and trade imbalance with Washington, a State Department official said. “What I can say in terms of India is that the President has been very clear in terms of the concerns he has regarding the trade imbalance, regarding the concerns he has when it comes to the purchase of Russian oil. You have seen him take action directly on that,” State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said at a press briefing on Thursday.

He was responding to a question on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit from August 31 to September 1, his first visit to the country in seven years.

“India is a strategic partner with whom we engage in a full and frank dialogue. That will continue,” Pigott said, adding that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also spoken about it. “Like anything in foreign policy, you are not going to align 100 per cent of the time on everything. But it is very clear. The President has been clear (about) the concerns that he has with the trade imbalance, the concerns he has with India purchasing Russian oil. He has taken action,” Pigott said.

In response to another question on whether there is concern about an overall worsening in America’s relationship with India and the potential for Delhi turning more towards China, Pigott stressed that this is about an “honest, full and frank dialogue” about real concerns that this administration has, which the President has outlined very clearly and has been addressing through his actions. “Addressing those concerns is important. That is part of what it means to have a frank dialogue,” he said. “Ultimately, this is about a frank and full dialogue, and that is what it means to advance American interests. That is what it means to really have full diplomatic dialogue with partners to address concerns that we need to see addressed,” he said.

Son of Hizb chief granted bail, another denied

Pulwama court orders admin to refrain from erecting height barriers on Naina-Awantipora link road till next hearing

New Delhi, Aug 8: The Delhi High Court on Friday granted bail to one of the sons of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin while denying the relief to another in a terror funding case.

A bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Shalinder Kaur dismissed the bail plea of Salahuddin’s son Shahid Yusuf, saying the court cannot ignore the larger conspiracy brought forth by the prosecution.

Considering the prosecution’s allegation of the use of hawala channels to route terror funds into Jammu and Kashmir, the court said Yusuf was allegedly part of this network.

“The nature of the allegations and the material placed on record prima facie establish the appellant’s involvement in this conspiracy and his direct contact with known members of the proscribed terrorist outfit,” it said.

The order said he was allegedly received money from co-accused Aijaz Ahmad Bhat alias Aijaz Maqbool Bhat, knowing the funds would be used to further terrorist activities.

The possibility of Yusuf being a flight risk, the high court said, couldn’t be ruled out, particularly given that he reportedly travelled on a passport with a falsified parental identity previously and destroyed the document later.

There exists a real likelihood of his tampering with evidence and influencing witnesses, the bench said.

While granting bail to Syed Ahmad Shakeel, the court said he has already suffered prolonged incarceration of 6.11 years without any certainty of the trial concluding within a reasonable time. The court said the mainstay of the prosecution against Shakeel was the receipt of money and not its use for any terrorist activity.

He was observed to be a government servant, working as a senior lab technician in the Department of Microbiology at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Soura.

“Keeping in view the role assigned to the appellant (Shakeel), continued detention of the appellant at this stage would not serve the ends of justice,” the bench said.

He was granted bail on a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh with two sureties of the like amount.

Shakeel was arrested by the NIA on August 30, 2018, from his residence in Srinagar, in a terror funding case lodged in 2011.

According to the NIA, the case relates to the transfer of funds through hawala channels by the terrorists based in Pakistan to Jammu and Kashmir, in a criminal conspiracy hatched with some operatives in India, to fuel and fund the secessionist and terrorist activities in J&K.

Yusuf was arrested in October 2017 on the allegations of receiving funds from Hizb-ul-Mujahideen from abroad and was chargesheeted in 2018.

Shakeel was alleged to have received money through Western Union from absconding accused Aijaz Ahmad Bhat, and his name had also surfaced in raising, receiving and collecting funds from the terrorist organisation through cadres from Saudi Arabia.

Syed Salahuddin, designated as a “global terrorist” by the United States, is the self-styled commander of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen.
