Gold declines Rs 600 to Rs 99,020 per 10 g; silver plunges Rs 1,000

New Delhi, July 16: Falling for the second straight session, gold prices depreciated Rs 500 to Rs 98,870 per 10 grams in the national capital on Wednesday due to continuous selling by stockists, according to the All India Sarafa Association.

On Tuesday, the precious metal of 99.9 per cent purity had declined by Rs 200 to close at Rs 99,370 per 10 grams.

Meanwhile, gold of 99.5 per cent purity slipped Rs 400 to Rs 98,400 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes). It had settled at Rs 98,800 per 10 grams in the previous market session.

Also, silver prices declined by Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,11,000 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) on Wednesday. The white metal had finished at Rs 1,12,000 per kg on Tuesday.

In contrast, spot gold rose by USD 16.41 or 0.49 per cent to USD 3,341.37 per ounce in the global markets.

“Gold edged higher to USD 3,346 per ounce, supported by renewed tariff threats from President Donald Trump, who signalled possible levies on pharmaceuticals by the end of the month, with additional duties on semiconductors also under consideration.

“Risk appetite remains subdued as new tariffs targeting 25 countries, including Canada, Mexico, and the EU, are set to take effect on August 1,” Kaynat Chainwala, AVP-Commodity Research, Kotak Securities, said.

On the global front, spot silver went up nearly 1 per cent to trade at USD 38.05 per ounce.

“Gold has been consolidating while silver has been breaking out. Silver prices pushed as high as USD 39 per ounce, first and foremost reflecting renewed investor interest.

“We have seen continued inflows into physically backed silver products during the past few weeks, and the open interest in the futures market has also been expanding, in particular in China. Technical traders further fuelled the rally after prices broke above important resistance levels,” Carsten Menke, Head of Economics and Next Generation Research at Julius Baer, said.

Menke further stated that by judging the strength of the recent rally and the decline of the gold/silver ratio to around 85, silver does not appear particularly cheap anymore in comparison to gold.

“When the ratio was at 100, we highlighted silver’s catch-up potential, but this seems to be very much exhausted as of now.”

According to Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst – Commodity and Currency, LKP Securities, investors will be awaiting key US macroeconomic data, including Producer Price Index (PPI) and jobless claims, which will provide further insights for the trajectory of bullion prices.

Two NEET aspirants die by suicide in Nagpur

Nagpur, July 16: In a deeply distressing incident that has sent shockwaves through Nagpur and beyond, two students preparing for the NEET medical entrance exam died by suicide within a few hours of each other.

Khwahish Devram Nagare, a 16-year-old resident of Balaghat in Madhya Pradesh, took his own life. The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of the Ambazari police station of Nagpur city.

He had come to Nagpur to prepare for the NEET exam and was attending coaching classes at PhysicsWallah Tuition Centre on Canal Road. Living in a private hostel in the city, Khwahish was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his room on Wednesday morning.

Before taking the extreme step, he left behind a short note that read: “Sorry, mom-dad, I won’t be able to do it.”

The poignant message has shaken parents, teachers, and the academic community, once again highlighting the dark side of competitive exam culture and the weight of expectations placed on young shoulders.

Just a few hours ago, a 17-year-old girl, Vaidehi Anil Uike, also died by suicide while preparing for the same exam. She was staying in another part of the city, under the jurisdiction of Hingna police station. Her death, too, has been registered as an accidental death by the police.

The back-to-back suicides have sparked concern, with questions being raised about the intense academic pressure students face while preparing for highly competitive exams like NEET.

Nagpur Police Commissioner Ravinder Kumar Singhal appealed to parents to be more mindful of their children’s mental well-being. “Please do not burden children with pressure to succeed academically. There are many career options available today — even for those who may not wish to pursue formal education,” he said.

HC denies bail to juvenile in narco-terror case

Recourse to PSA unconstitutional if penal code provisions sufficient: J&K HC in drug peddling case

Jammu, July 16: The High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh has refused to grant bail to a juvenile accused in a serious narco-terrorism case, citing the grave nature of offences and national security concerns.

The Juvenile, whose identity is withheld in compliance with legal provisions was apprehended in connection with a narco-terror case investigated by State Investigation Agency (SIA) registered at Police Station Samba/SIA Jammu. The case involves grave offences under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act U(A)PA, NDPS Act, Arms Act, Foreigners Act, and the Enemy Agents Ordinance.

Although a minor at the time of arrest, the Juvenile Justice board declared the accused to be tried as an adult on the severity of the offences and his demonstrated maturity. The High Court, presided by Hon’ble Justice Rajesh Sekhri, upheld the trial court’s decision denying bail under Section 12 of the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015.

The Court observed that the accused was allegedly a key part of an organized narco-terror module, and allowing him to benefit from the leniencies of juvenile law would be contrary to public interest and national security. Narco-terrorism is no longer confined to drug-weapon smuggling. The use of Narcotics as a terror currency and the cross-border smuggling of Narcotics and terror activities have, of late, become a new front of proxy war, unleashed by the adversary from across the border. A dual strategy of sending across the drugs and weapons is being employed by the enemy to threaten economic security of the country, incite subversive activities and disrupt the social fabric.

With these finding the Hon’ble High Court concluded that Juvenile is not entitled to the benefit of bail under the Juvenile Justice Act, due to the grave and organized nature of alleged offences. The bail application was accordingly dismissed.

A closer look at diagnosis and prevention

0
Only 3 out of 5 heart failure patients see cardiologist at least once a year: Study

Srinagar, July 16: While an electrocardiogram (ECG) is a key diagnostic tool for detecting heart attacks, it’s not always conclusive. There are several reasons for this, and understanding them can help people better manage their heart health.
1. Timing Matters
An ECG may not show the typical signs of a heart attack if it is done too early—before substantial damage has occurred. In some cases, even during a heart attack, the ECG may appear normal, particularly if the damage is minor or the heart’s electrical activity hasn’t been significantly disrupted at that moment.
2. Type of Heart Attack
Not all heart attacks show up clearly on an ECG. Silent heart attacks, which may occur with few or no symptoms, often go unnoticed on ECGs if they don’t cause obvious electrical changes. That’s why doctors often keep patients under observation for 12 to 24 hours and conduct multiple ECGs to detect evolving abnormalities.
3. Additional Confirmatory Tests
Troponin tests are commonly used alongside ECGs. Troponin is a protein released when the heart muscle is damaged. However, troponin levels take time to rise after a heart attack. This makes it essential to repeat the test—typically after 90 minutes—especially if initial results are inconclusive.
Other diagnostic options include:
• Ultrasound (Echocardiogram): Helps assess heart function and detect damage.
• Coronary Angiography: A more invasive test that gives a detailed view of coronary artery blockages.
4. Preventive Screenings to Reduce Risk
Prevention is critical. People should monitor risk factors like high blood pressure, cholesterol, and obesity from as early as age 25. Specific tests and steps include:
• Check for familial hypercholesterolemia (FH): A genetic condition that causes high LDL cholesterol despite a healthy lifestyle.
• Measure Lipoprotein(a): Even normal cholesterol levels can be deceptive if lipoprotein(a) is elevated, as it accelerates plaque buildup.
• Keep LDL under 50 mg/dL (or below 30 mg/dL with family history), and triglycerides low.
5. Calcium Score Test
This non-invasive CT scan measures calcified plaque in the arteries. A high score indicates higher risk for heart attack or stroke, allowing for early intervention with medication and lifestyle changes. While it doesn’t predict an immediate event, it helps identify individuals who may benefit from proactive care.
In summary, while an ECG is a valuable tool, it should be part of a broader diagnostic and preventive approach that includes repeated testing, biochemical markers, imaging, and long-term health monitoring

20 Palestinians killed at distribution site in Gaza

Over 100 killed in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza

Tel Aviv, July 16: An Israeli-backed American organisation that runs an aid programme in the Gaza Strip said Wednesday 20 Palestinians were killed near a distribution site. This comes as Israeli strikes killed 41 others, including 11 children, according to hospital officials.

The Gaza Humanitarian Fund said 19 people were trampled in a stampede and one person was fatally stabbed in the violence near a distribution hub in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis.

The group, which rarely acknowledges trouble at its distribution sites, accused Hamas of fomenting panic and spreading misinformation that led to the violence, though it provided no evidence to support the claim.

The United Nations human rights office and Gaza’s Health Ministry say some 850 Palestinians in the enclave have been killed while waiting to receive aid since May, both at GHF distribution points or elsewhere.

Israeli strikes killed 22 people in northern Gaza, including 11 children, and 19 people in the city of Khan Younis. The Israeli military said it has struck more than 120 targets in the past 24 hours across the Gaza Strip, including Hamas military infrastructure of tunnels and weapons storage facilities.

Israel accuses Hamas of hiding military infrastructure amidst civilian areas in Gaza.

Also on Thursday, the Israeli military announced the opening of a fourth corridor, bisecting the southern city of Khan Younis, where Israeli troops have seized land in what they said is a pressure tactic against Hamas. In the past, these narrow strips of land have been a serious hurdle during ceasefire negotiations, as Israel said it wants to maintain military presence in those corridors.

Gaza’s more than 2 million Palestinians are living through a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. Since Hamas attacked Israel on Oct 7, 2023, setting off the 21-month war, Israel has bombarded and laid siege to the strip, leaving many teetering on the edge of famine, according to food security experts.

GHF is an American organisation registered in Delaware. It was established in February to distribute humanitarian aid during the ongoing Gaza humanitarian crisis.

Since the GHF sites began operating, Palestinians say Israeli troops open fire almost every day toward crowds on roads heading to the distribution points, through Israeli military zones. Several hundred people have been killed and hundreds more wounded, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry and witnesses.
