Nehal Modi arrested in US following India’s extradition request

New Delhi, Jul 5: Nehal Modi, brother of fugitive businessman Nirav Modi, has been arrested in the United States in connection with the multi-billion-dollar Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, reports national media.

His arrest on July 4 follows an extradition request submitted by Indian authorities, including the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

US authorities confirmed that the extradition proceedings are based on charges of money laundering under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002, and criminal conspiracy under sections of the Indian Penal Code, repors TOI.

Investigators allege that Nehal Modi played a central role in laundering proceeds from the PNB fraud and aided in concealing evidence after the scam came to light. He is also accused of facilitating the movement of illicit funds and gold through shell companies and overseas transactions. Nehal Modi, who holds Belgian nationality and was raised in Antwerp, was named in charge sheets filed by the ED. He is alleged to have acted in coordination with Nirav Modi and their uncle Mehul Choksi, both also under investigation in the case. A status hearing in the US extradition case is scheduled for July 17, during which Nehal Modi may seek bail. US prosecutors have indicated they will oppose his release.

Altaf Bukhari expresses concern over recurrence of mysterious illness in Rajouri

Bandipora, Jul 5: Apni Party President Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari on Saturday criticised the ruling National Conference (NC) for failing to fulfil promises made to people during assembly elections.

Bukhari was talking to media persons on the sidelines of Pani Party workers’ one day convention here. “If we talk about the promises made by the National Conference during elections, I do not think they have even started to work on them,” he said.

Flanked by Apni Party leaders Imtiyaz Parry and Syed Shafat Kazmi, district president Bandipora, Bukhari said that for the last eight to nine months, people are still waiting for those promises to materialise. He also requested the NC government to declare a holiday on July 13 (Martyrs’ Day), calling it a “very important day” in Kashmir’s history.“Do they require permission from Delhi even for this,” he said.

Israeli airstrikes kill 24 Palestinians in Gaza, including 10 seeking food

Deir al-Balah, July 05: Israeli airstrikes killed 24 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, including 10 as they sought food in the embattled enclave, hospital officials told the Associated Press on Saturday.

Two American aid workers with the Israel-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation were also injured in southern Gaza after unknown assailants threw grenades at them at a food distribution site, the organisation said.

The bloodshed comes as US-led ceasefire efforts aimed at halting a nearly 21-month war appear to be gaining momentum. Hamas gave a “positive” response late Friday to the latest US proposal for a 60-day truce but said further talks were needed on implementation.

Hamas has been seeking guarantees that the initial truce would lead to a total end to the war and withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. President Donald Trump has been pushing for an agreement and is set to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House next week to discuss a deal.

Israeli strikes kill Palestinians in southern Gaza

The Israeli airstrikes struck tents in the Muwasi area on the southern end of Gaza’s Mediterranean coast, killing seven people, including a Palestinian doctor and his three children, according to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis.

Four others were killed in the town of Bani Suheila in southern Gaza, and three people were killed in three different strikes in Khan Younis. The Israeli army did not provide immediate comment on the strikes.

Meanwhile, eight Palestinians were killed near a GHF aid distribution site in the southern city of Rafah, the hospital said. One Palestinian was also killed near another GHF point in Rafah. It was not clear how far away the Palestinians were from the sites.

GHF denied the killings happened near their sites. Previously the organization has said no one has been shot at its sites, which are guarded by private contractors but can only be accessed by passing Israeli military positions hundreds of meters away.

The army had no immediate comment, but has said it fires warning shots as a crowd-control measure and it only aims at people when its troops are threatened.

One Palestinian was also killed waiting in crowds for aid trucks in eastern Khan Younis, officials at Nasser Hospital said. The United Nations and other international organizations bring in their own supplies of aid. It was unclear to which organization the aid trucks the Palestinians were waiting for belonged to, but the incident did not appear to be connected to GHF operations.

Crowds of Palestinians often wait for trucks and unload or loot their contents before they reach their destinations. These trucks must pass through areas under Israeli military control. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the incident.

American aid workers wounded in Gaza

The GHF said the two American aid workers were injured Saturday morning at a distribution site in Khan Younis. The assailants threw grenades at the aid workers, the statement said.

GHF later posted a photo of the fragments of the explosive device and claimed, without providing evidence, that it was detonated by Hamas militants. It said the injuries were not life-threatening, and the two men received medical attention.

The GHF distributes aid from four sites that are surrounded by Israeli troops, three of which are in the far south of Gaza.

GHF is a US- and Israeli-backed initiative meant to bypass the UN Israel says Hamas has been siphoning off aid delivered by the UN — a claim the UN denies. Hamas has urged Palestinians not to cooperate with the GHF.

GHF is an American organization, registered in Delaware, that began distributing food to Palestinians in late May. Palestinians say Israeli troops open fire almost every day toward crowds on roads heading to the distribution points, through Israeli military zones. Several hundred people have been killed and hundreds more wounded, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry and witnesses.

The war in Gaza was set off after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people and taking 250 others hostage. Israel responded with an offensive that has killed over 57,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, displaced nearly all of Gaza’s 2 million people and left many on the edge of famine.

The ministry is led by medical professionals employed by Gaza’s Hamas government. It does not differentiate between civilians and combatants, but its figures are seen by the UN and other international organizations as the most reliable statistics on war casualties.

3 drug peddlers held with contraband substance in Baramulla: Police

Srinagar, July 05: Jammu and Kashmir Police in north Kashmir’s Baramulla arrested three drug peddlers and recovered contraband substances from their possession.

A police spokesperson said that a police team headed by SHO Police Station Tangmarg at a checkpoint established at Tangmarg intercepted a Vehicle (Maruti van) with 02 persons onboard.  During the search, 84 grams of charas-like substance was recovered from their possession. They have been identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Parray, son of Mohd Sultan Parray, resident of Druroo; and Mohd Shafi Lone, son of Gh Mohiuddin Lone, resident of Gund Maqsood. Moreover, another drug peddler namely Riyaz Ahmad Mir, son of Ghulam Ahmad Mir, resident of Ratnipora was apprehended alongwith 86 grams of charas-like substance. All the accused persons have been arrested and a vehicle used in the commission of crime was also seized.

Accordingly, cases under relevant section of law have been registered and investigation has been initiated. Further investigation is underway to trace other individuals involved in the drug trade, spokesperson said.

Interpretation of law, Constitution has to be pragmatic, as per society's needs: CJI Gavai

Mumbai, July 05: Chief Justice of India Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai on Saturday said the interpretation of law or the Constitution has to be “pragmatic” and in a way that suits the needs of society.

Speaking at a felicitation organised for him by the Bombay High Court here, he also mentioned that recently he had received complaints about the rude behaviour of “some of the colleagues”, and urged the judges to protect the reputation of the institution.

Citing a past Supreme Court judgement, Gavai said any law or the Constitution has to be interpreted in the context of “problems faced by the present generation.”

“The interpretation has to be pragmatic. It has to be one that suits the needs of society,” he added.

Judges are expected to work as per their conscience, the oath of office and law, but “should never be perturbed once the matter is decided”, he said.

A judge should cut off his mind from the matter and forget what happens to it thereafter, he added.

Talking about the appointment of judges, the CJI asserted that “at no cost the independence of judiciary shall be compromised”.

While making appointments either to the Supreme court or high courts, the collegium ensures that merit is maintained while there is diversity and inclusiveness, Gavai said.

He complimented the Bombay High Court — where he once practiced as a lawyer and served as a judge — for its work, and said he feels proud when people appreciate its judgements.

The CJI also said that lately he has been “receiving a lot of complaints about the rude behaviour of some of the colleagues.”

“Being a judge is not a 10 to 5 job, it’s an opportunity to serve society. It is an opportunity to serve the nation,” he stressed, and urged the judges to be “true to their oath and commitment.”

“Please do not do anything which brings disrepute to this august institution, whose reputation has been so laboriously built by the devotion and dedication of generations of lawyers and generations of judges,” he said.

Two CRPF personnel among seven injured in stray dog attack in Bijbehara

Anantnag, Jul 05: At least seven people, including two CRPF personnel and five civilians, were injured in yet another stray dog attack in South Kashmir’s Bijbehara town on Saturday.

The incident took place in the Jablipora area of Bijbehara, with additional bite cases reported from adjoining localities such as Arwani, Waghama, Sri Gufwara, and Marhama.

Medical Superintendent of Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Bijbehara, Dr. Mushtaq Ahmad, confirmed the injuries, stating, “We received two CRPF jawans and five civilians with dog bites today. Unfortunately, such cases have become a daily routine here in Bijbehara.”

The repeated incidents have triggered anger and fear among locals, who have long demanded that authorities take urgent steps to curb the stray dog menace.

Locals allege that poor waste management and lack of sterilization drives are key contributors to the problem, which continues to put lives at risk. [KNT]

Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina to make acting debut in Tamil films

Chennai, July 05: Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina is set to make his acting debut in a Tamil film under the production of Dream Knight Stories (DKS) banner.

Taking to their Instagram handle, DKS shared a video, announcing the arrival of Suresh Raina, affectionately known as ‘Chinna Thala’ by the Chennai Super Kings fans.

The video featured Raina entering a cricket stadium with fans cheering in large numbers. As per the announcement video, the film is expected to be based on cricket.

It is directed by Logan and is produced by D Saravana Kumar under the banner of DKS.

While sharing the video, the makers wrote, “Welcoming Chinna Thala @sureshraina3 on board for #DKSProductionNo1!”

The makers have not revealed the details of the movie yet.

Indian cricketer Shivam Dube, who plays the role of a pinch hitter for the Chennai Super Kings, officially unveiled the name of the production house and its logo.

Raina is one of the most loved figures in Chennai, owing to his impeccable performance in the Chennai Super Kings franchise.

Raina is considered one of the best middle-order batters produced by India and was the first Indian player to have a century across all formats of the game.

In 322 international matches, Raina has scored 7,988 runs at an average of 32.87 and a strike rate of over 92. He scored seven centuries and 48 fifties in 291 innings, with the best score of 120.

The left-handed batter won the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 and ICC Champions Trophy 2013 with Men in Blue.

His knocks of 34* against Australia in the 2011 WC quarterfinals and 36* against Pakistan in the semis are two of the most memorable clutch knocks by a middle-order batter on a big stage.

Raina also represented CSK and Gujarat Lions (2016-2017) in the Indian Premier League. He is the fifth-highest run-scorer of all time in league history with 5,528 runs in 205 matches at an average of 32.51 and a strike rate of over 136.73.

Pakistan: Death toll from Karachi building collapse rises to 17

Karachi, July 05: The death toll from the five-storey residential building collapse in Karachi’s Lyari has risen to 17 as more bodies were recovered from the debris, the Pakistani authorities said on Saturday.

Emergency responders have rescued nine injured survivors so far, but officials fear at least 25 to 30 more people may still be buried beneath the debris, reported Pakistan’s Express Tribune newspaper.

The building, which housed six families, collapsed early Friday morning. Among those confirmed dead are three women and a child.

The incident has triggered scenes of panic and distress in Pakistan’s southern port city where several buildings have been declared unfit for occupation.

The officials revealed that the decades-old building, located in Lyari’s congested Baghdadi area, was declared unsafe three years ago. However, the residents did not evacuate the premises and nor did the authorities take any enforcement action. Each floor of the building reportedly contained three apartments.

Karachi South Deputy Commissioner Javed Khoso confirmed to the Pakistani daily that the building’s residents were served notices in 2022, 2023, and 2024. Of 107 dangerous buildings in the district, 21 are classified as highly hazardous, and 14 have already been vacated, he stated.

As the search operation continues for over 24 hours, District South Deputy Commissioner Javed Khoso on Saturday told Geo News that it may take up to eight to 10 hours to complete the rescue operation.

He said that there were still 22 extremely dangerous buildings in Lyari — of which 16 have been evacuated.

Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi also advised the residents of the damaged buildings to move to another place to avoid any mishap.

“We cannot forcefully evict anyone,” the commissioner was quoted as saying by Geo News, adding that he will hold a meeting with the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) on the issue of illegal constructions.

Body with bullet injury found in Jammu park, suicide suspected

New Delhi, July 05: A 26-year-old UPSC aspirant died of asphyxiation after being trapped in a lift during a major fire at a retail store in Delhi’s Karol Bagh on Friday evening. The victim, identified as Dhirendra Pratap Singh, was found dead inside the elevator nearly eight hours after the fire broke out.

Just before his death, Dhirendra sent a desperate message to his brother on WhatsApp, saying, “Bhaiya, I’m stuck in the lift…I can’t breathe… please save me.” He also made calls pleading for help, but was not rescued in time.

His body was recovered from the lift at around 2:30 am by rescue teams.

Dhirendra, a native of Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh, had been living in a PG accommodation in Karol Bagh and was preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination.

He had recently cleared the Prelims and was preparing for the Mains exam. He held a Political Science degree and was pursuing his Master’s.

Speaking to ANI, Vikram said, “My brother had gone to Vishal Mega Mart to shop in the evening. At 6:51 PM, I received a WhatsApp message from him saying he had been trapped inside the lift and was struggling to breathe. He called me too and said, ‘Mujhe bacha lo, main lift mein phas gaya hoon, saans phool rahi hai’.”

“He was the most disciplined and hard-working person. He wanted to serve the country as a civil servant. Instead, due to someone else’s carelessness, he died a painful death,” said his brother Vikram Singh, holding back tears.

He alleged that the store staff did not respond and that they switched off the power and fled. “No one tried to rescue him. Even the police did not respond initially. We kept pleading for help till late at night. It was only at 2:30 AM that the store acknowledged someone was trapped inside,” he added.

Dhirendra’s sister, Dr Swati, said, “My brother is gone, but their mall will reopen. People use lifts with trolley bags every day in malls. Why did no one check if anyone was inside? They turned off the power and left. Their store will be repaired, but my brother won’t come back,” she said.

According to Delhi Fire Service officer Ravi Nath, a fire call was received at 6:44 PM on Friday from Vishal Mega Mart. “It’s a ground plus three-floor structure. One male body was recovered from the lift around 2 AM. The cause of the fire, availability of fire safety equipment, and status of fire NOC are under investigation,” he said.

Jammu, July 5: Jammu Police have registered a case against a woman accused of torturing, assaulting, and threatening her husband, two daughters, and in-laws, following the directions of a local court.

The accused, identified as Beera Bibi, wife of Zakir Hussain, a resident of Upper Roop Nagar, Paloura, was booked after her husband approached the Court of Special Excise Mobile Magistrate, Jammu, alleging police inaction despite multiple complaints.

Zakir Hussain, an ex-army soldier now working with the Postal Department, alleged that his wife had been verbally and physically abusing him, their minor daughters, and his elderly parents, reported Hindustan Times. In his petition filed under Section 175(3) of the BNSS, 2023, he sought the court’s intervention to direct the Janipur Police Station to register an FIR.

One of the cited incidents occurred on March 12, when Beera Bibi allegedly assaulted their seven-year-old daughter, threatened to kill Hussain and dispose of his body in a nearby river, and physically attacked him with bricks. According to officials, a 6-minute 41-second video clip reportedly shows her engaging in violent and aggressive behavior.

The complainant further stated that Beera Bibi repeatedly created disturbances at his workplace—the Sidhra Post Office—to disrupt his official duties and publicly defame him. He claimed that both he and his mother had recorded multiple instances of her violent conduct.

Additionally, Hussain alleged that a retired SSP, Mir Mohammad, an alleged associate of the accused, had also been harassing him and his parents.

Based on the court’s directions, an FIR has now been registered at Janipur Police Station under sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 131 (assault or use of criminal force), 132 (deterring a public servant from duty), and 351(3) (criminal intimidation by threats to cause death or grievous harm) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
