SpiceJet clarifies no safety risk after interior window panel comes loose mid-flight

Srinagar, July 3: A non-structural interior window frame on one of SpiceJet’s Q400 aircraft became loose during a flight and was found dislodged, the airline confirmed in an official statement.

#SpiceJet from Goa to Pune today. The whole interior window assembly just fell off mid-flight. And this flight is now supposed to take off and head to Jaipur. Wonder if it’s air worthy..” a passenger wrote on X.

SpiceJet emphasized that cabin pressurization remained stable throughout the journey, and passenger safety was never compromised. The loose component, described as a cosmetic trim used for shade, does not contribute to the aircraft’s structural integrity or pressure maintenance, the airline added.

“The Q400 aircraft features multiple window layers, including a pressure-bearing outer pane, ensuring continued safety even if a superficial panel is dislodged,” SpiceJet stated.

The incident gained attention after a passenger posted a video of the dislodged panel on social media platform X, raising concerns about the aircraft’s airworthiness.

Search operation underway in J-K's Kishtwar

Jammu, Jul 3: A search operation was underway on Thursday to track down two to three terrorists hiding in a forested area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, officials said.

The cordon and search operation follows an encounter that broke out between terrorists and security forces in the heavily forested Kanzal Mandu area of the Kuchal-Chatroo belt on Wednesday night.

The operation is backed by drones and sniffer dogs, with the cordon further strengthened by additional reinforcements.

As per unconfirmed reports, one terrorist is believed to have been injured in the gunbattle, which continued this morning.

The encounter started when police, assisted by the Army and CRPF, launched a cordon and search operation in the Kuchal area of Chatroo around 7:45 pm on Wednesday following information about the presence of terrorists, they said.

The officials said the terrorists opened fire on noticing the search parties, leading to a gunfight which was continuing when last reports came in.

Reinforcements have been rushed to the area to maintain a tight cordon and neutralise the terrorists, who are affiliated with Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad outfit, the officials said.

According to reports, top terrorists Saifullah and Adil are believed to be operating in the hills of the district.

This is the second encounter in the Jammu region in the past one week. On June 26, a Pakistan-based JeM terrorist was killed in an encounter with security forces, and three of his associates escaped into the forested area of the Basantgarh belt of Udhampur district.

Social media accounts of Pakistani actors, cricketers banned again in India

Srinagar, July 3: Multiple social media accounts of Pakistani celebrities and YouTube channels that were blocked in India during Operation Sindoor have been temporarily restored. This development comes after a recent government review found that several of these platforms had not shared anti-India content for a significant period.

As reported by the media, Instagram profiles of prominent actors including Mawra Hocane, Saba Qamar, Ahad Raza Mir, Yumna Zaidi, and Danish Taimoor were once again visible to Indian users on Wednesday. Additionally, YouTube channels belonging to former cricketers Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Akhtar were also made accessible.

Entertainment YouTube channels such as Hum TV, ARY Digital, and Har Pal Geo, which were previously blocked, were also made streamable in India again.

According to reports the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) intensified its demand for a permanent ban on all Pakistani entertainment content in India. In a fresh appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the association called for a complete shutdown, from social media and OTT to all forms of advertising and media collaborations.

Calling the reappearance of Pakistani celebrities “an emotional assault,” AICWA strongly criticised the development. The body referred to major terror attacks including 26/11, Pulwama, Uri, and the recent Pahalgam massacre where 26 civilians lost their lives. It condemned the silence of Pakistani artists and even their alleged anti-India comments after Operation Sindoor.

Analysts said they are only consolidating the bullish rectangle breakout and as long as the 25,200-25,270 area is protected, bulls are merely taking a breather.

“Under 25,200, we risk 25,000. On the upside, the recent swing high at 25,670 is where the bullish trigger lies,” said Akshay Chinchalkar, Head of Research, Axis Securities.

With the deadline for the US tariff pause expiring next week, it will be interesting to see if the current optimism globally holds up.

“Today is weekly derivatives expiry, so higher than usual volatility may be seen,” he added.

Nifty Bank was down 9.90 points or 0.02 per cent at 56,989.30 in early trade.

The Nifty Midcap 100 index was trading at 59,645.25 after declining 22 points or 0.04 per cent. Nifty Smallcap 100 index was at 18,969.35 after declining 7.75 points or 0.04 per cent.

Meanwhile, in the Sensex pack, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, BEL, Titan, Axis Bank, NTPC, SBI, HCL Tech and ITC were the top losers.

On the other hand, Eternal (earlier Zomato), Asian Paints, M&M, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, Maruti Suzuki and ICICI Bank were the top gainers.

The foreign institutional investors (FIIs) extended their selling on July 2 as they sold equities worth Rs 1,561.62 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) continued their buying as they bought equities worth Rs 3,036.68 crore on the same day.

In the Asian markets, Bangkok, China, Japan, Seoul and Jakarta were trading in green, whereas only Hong Kong was trading in red.

In the last trading session, Dow Jones in the US closed at 44,484.42, down 10.52 points, or 0.02 per cent. The S&P 500 ended with a gain of 29.41 points, or 0.47 per cent at 6,227.42 and the Nasdaq closed at 20,393.13, up 190.24 points, or 0.94 per cent.

Analysts said that the US-Vietnam trade deal indicates the eagerness of the US administration to strike as many trade deals as possible since deals with EU and Japan appear unlikely soon.

In Gaza, summer heat amplifies daily struggle to survive

0
Israeli strikes across Gaza kill at least 59 as Israel prepares to ramp up its offensive

Khan Younis, July 03: For Rida Abu Hadayed, summer adds a new layer of misery to a daily struggle to survive in the war-ravaged Gaza Strip.

With temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, daybreak begins with the cries of Hadayed’s seven children sweltering inside the displaced family’s cramped nylon tent. Outside, the humidity is unbearable.

The only way the 32-year-old mother can offer her children relief is by fanning them with a tray or bits of paper — whatever she can find. If she has water, she pours it over them, but that is an increasingly scarce resource.

“There is no electricity. There is nothing,” she said, her face beaded with sweat. “They cannot sleep. They keep crying all day until the sun sets.”

The heat in Gaza has intensified hardships for its 2 million residents. Reduced water availability, crippled sanitation networks, and shrinking living spaces threaten to cause illnesses to cascade through communities, aid groups have long warned.

The scorching summer coincides with a lack of clean water for the majority of Gaza’s population, most of whom are displaced in tented communities. Many Palestinians in the enclave must walk long distances to fetch water and ration each drop, limiting their ability to wash and keep cool.

“We are only at the beginning of summer,“ Hadayed’s husband, Yousef, said. “And our situation is dire.”

Israel had blocked food, fuel, medicine and all other supplies from entering Gaza for nearly three months. It began allowing limited aid in May, but fuel needed to pump water from wells or operate desalination plants is still not getting into the territory.

With fuel supplies short, only 40 per cent of drinking water production facilities are functioning in the Gaza Strip, according to a recent report by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. All face imminent collapse. Up to 93 per cent of households face water shortages, the June report said.

The Hadayeds were displaced after evacuation orders forced them to leave eastern Khan Younis.

“Our lives in the tent are miserable. We spend our days pouring water over their heads and their skin,” Yousef Hadayed said. “Water itself is scarce. It is very difficult to get that water.”

UNICEF’s spokesperson recently said that if fuel supplies are not allowed to enter the enclave, children will die of thirst.

“Me and my children spend our days sweating,” said Reham Abu Hadayed, a 30-year-old relative of Rida Abu Hadayed who was also displaced from eastern Khan Younis. She worries about the health of her four children.

“I don’t have enough money to buy them medicine,” she said.

For Mohammed al-Awini, 23, the heat is not the worst part. It’s the flies and mosquitoes that bombard his tent, especially at night.

Without adequate sewage networks, garbage piles up on streets, attracting insects and illness. The stench of decomposing trash wafts in the air.

“We are awake all night, dying from mosquito bites,” he said. “We are the most tired people in the world.”

Div Com Kashmir flags off first batch of Amarnath pilgrims from Baltal

Baltal, July 03: Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, on Wednesday flagged off the first batch of pilgrims from the Baltal base camp to the holy Amarnath cave, marking the official commencement of this year’s Yatra.

Also present on the occasion were Secretary, Science and Technology, Shahid Iqbal Choudhary—who is also the Nodal Officer for the Baltal axis—Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal Jatin Kishore, SSP Ganderbal Khalil Poswal, and other senior officials.

Speaking at the event, the Divisional Commissioner emphasized that the Amarnath Yatra is not merely a religious journey but a “Yatra of the people,” reflecting its broader social and cultural significance. He highlighted the comprehensive arrangements put in place by the Ganderbal administration to ensure the safety and comfort of the pilgrims, including enhanced medical facilities, sanitation services, and security measures.

The first batch of pilgrims had been warmly welcomed by the administration on their arrival, and the Div Com extended his best wishes for a safe and spiritually fulfilling journey.

Chants of “Har Har Mahadev” and “Bam Bam Bhole” echoed through the base camp as the devotees began their trek. Pilgrims expressed satisfaction and enthusiasm over the arrangements.

The 38-day pilgrimage, which began today, will conclude on August 9. Pilgrims can choose between two routes: the traditional 48-kilometre Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the shorter, steeper 14-kilometre Baltal route in Ganderbal district. The first group of pilgrims had departed from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu on July 2.

Three Indians abducted in Mali; India urges swift action for their release

India slams China’s “preposterous” renaming places in Arunachal Pradesh

New Delhi, July 03: The government has expressed serious concern over the abduction of three Indian nationals from a cement factory in Mali following a string of coordinated terror attacks across the West African nation.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the incident occurred on July 1 at the Diamond Cement Factory in Kayes, western Mali, where armed assailants stormed the premises and forcibly took three Indian employees’ hostage. The abduction is believed to be part of a wider wave of terrorist attacks on military and government installations in western and central Mali on the same day.

India’s Embassy in Bamako is working closely with Malian authorities, local law enforcement, and the management of the Diamond Cement Factory to ensure the safe release of the hostages. The embassy is also in regular touch with the families of the abducted Indians.

Calling the abduction a “deplorable act of violence,” the MEA has urged the Government of Mali to take immediate and comprehensive steps to secure the safe and swift release of the Indian nationals. Senior Indian officials are monitoring the situation and remain engaged with counterparts in Mali.

“The safety, security, and welfare of Indian nationals abroad remains a matter of utmost priority,” the MEA stated, while advising all Indian citizens in Mali to exercise extreme caution, stay alert, and maintain close contact with the Indian Embassy in Bamako.

The ministry assured that it will continue to provide all necessary support to ensure the safe return of the abducted individuals.

India, US to ink 10-year defence framework: Pentagon

‘India, US trade talks from Apr 23; pact’s terms of reference includes about 19 chapters’

New Delhi, July 03: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his American counterpart Pete Hegseth have agreed to firm up a 10-year framework to further expand defence and strategic ties between India and the US.

The decision on the defence framework was mentioned in a Pentagon statement that was released on Wednesday, a day after Singh and US Defence Secretary Hegseth held a phone conversation.

“Secretary Hegseth and Minister Singh agreed to sign the next 10-year US-India Defence Framework when they next meet this year,” it said.

It said the two sides discussed pending major US defence sales to India and the imperative of close defence industrial cooperation between the two countries.

“Secretary Hegseth emphasised the priority the United States places on India as its key defence partner in South Asia,” the Pentagon said.

It said the two leaders reviewed the “considerable progress” both countries have made toward achieving the defence goals set out in the February 2025 joint statement by President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“The two discussed pending major US defence sales to India and the imperative of close defence industrial cooperation between the two countries,” the Pentagon readout said without providing further details.

In the phone conversation on Tuesday, Singh urged Hegseth to expedite the delivery of GE F404 engines to power the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft, people familiar with the matter said.

Singh also pitched for early finalisation of a proposed deal between Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) and US defence major GE Aerospace for joint production of F414 jet engines in India, they said.

The delay in the supply of F404 engines by GE Aerospace has resulted in HAL missing the deadline to supply Tejas Mark 1A aircraft to the Indian Air Force.

An Indian readout on Tuesday said Singh and Hegseth discussed a wide canvas of issues ranging from long-term cooperation in the defence sector, including training and military exchanges, to expanding industry collaborations.

“They agreed to further build upon the momentum of this critical and mutually beneficial partnership across all its pillars such as interoperability, integration of defence industrial supply chains, logistics sharing, increased joint military exercises and cooperation with other like-minded partners,” it said.
