‘Chunaav ka chawkidaar’ protected ‘vote chors’: Rahul’s dig at EC

'Chunaav ka chawkidaar' protected 'vote chors': Rahul's dig at EC

New Delhi, Sep 19: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday reiterated his “vote chori” allegations and took a swipe at the Election Commission, calling it an “election watchman” who “stayed awake, watched the theft, and protected the thieves”.

His remarks came a day after he ramped up his attack on the issue of vote theft, accusing Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar of protecting those who “destroyed democracy”.

To buttress his allegation, he cited data from a Karnataka assembly constituency to claim that votes of Congress supporters were being systematically deleted.

The Election Commission dubbed the allegations “incorrect and baseless” and said. “No deletion of any vote can be done online by any member of the public, as misconceived by Gandhi.”

In a post in Hindi on X on Friday, Gandhi said, “Wake up at 4 a.m. Eliminate two voters in 36 seconds, Then go back to sleep – this is how vote theft happens!”

“Chunaav ka chawkidaar jaagta raha, chori dekhta raha, choron ko bachata raha (The election watchman stayed awake, watched the theft, and protected the thieves),” the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha charged.

Gandhi also shared a 36-second video from his press conference in which he explains the modus operandi of the alleged “vote theft”.

In a post on Thursday evening, Gandhi had said, “The nation’s youth, the nation’s students, the nation’s Gen Z, will defend the Constitution, protect democracy, and stop vote theft. I always stand with them. Jai Hind!”

In his fresh offensive against the Election Commission, Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, had said Thursday that the poll panel must stop protecting “vote chors” and provide within a week information sought by the Karnataka CID in an investigation into voter deletions.

If not, it will be known for sure that the poll body is complicit in the “murder of the Constitution”, Gandhi alleged at his press conference at the Congress’ Indira Bhawan headquarters here.

And this, he said at the outset, was not the “hydrogen bomb” revelations that he had promised. That will happen soon.

Gandhi cited details of alleged attempts to delete 6,018 votes in Karnataka’s Aland constituency in the run up to 2023 assembly polls. He also gave the example of Maharashtra’s Rajura constituency where he claimed 6,850 voters were added in a “fraudulent” manner using automated software.

“Same system is doing this. It is doing it in Karnataka, Maharashtra, it has done it in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and we have proof of it,” the Congress leader had alleged.

“Our demand is Gyanesh Kumar, do your job… You have taken an oath, you are India’s chief election commissioner, you must give evidence to the Karnataka CID,” Gandhi had said, directly taking on the CEC.

He had also asked the CEC to “stop giving excuses” and release evidence to the Karnataka CID immediately.

Taliban bans books by women, 18 university subjects in sweeping curriculum purge

New Delhi, Sept 19: The Taliban government has ordered the removal of hundreds of books from Afghanistan’s university system, including more than 140 written by women, and imposed a ban on 18 academic subjects, citing conflicts with Sharia law and state policy, reports BBC. Among the blacklisted titles are works such as Safety in the Chemical Laboratory.

Officials said the restrictions target materials deemed “anti-Sharia and against Taliban policies.” At least six of the prohibited subjects focus on women, including Gender and Development, The Role of Women in Communication, and Women’s Sociology.

The decree, issued in late August and circulated to universities, was signed by Ziaur Rahman Aryubi, deputy academic director of the Taliban-run Ministry of Higher Education, reports BBC. He said the decisions followed recommendations by a panel of “religious scholars and experts.”

The order also bans books by Iranian authors or publishers, with 310 of the 679 proscribed titles falling into this category. A member of the review committee told BBC Afghan the measure aimed to curb the “infiltration of Iranian content” into the curriculum.

The move adds to a growing list of restrictions since the Taliban regained power in 2021. Women and girls have borne the brunt: barred from schooling beyond the sixth grade and, since late 2024, excluded from midwifery training programs. This week, the group also banned fibre-optic internet in at least ten provinces, reportedly to curb “immorality.”

Zakia Adeli, former deputy justice minister and one of the affected authors, said the new ban was predictable. “When women themselves are not allowed to study, their views, ideas and writings are also suppressed,” she remarked.

The Taliban maintain that women’s rights are respected “in accordance with Afghan culture and Islamic law.”

Ramban, Sep 19: The Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested a man for the alleged killing of a woman and her two children in the Banihal area of Ramban district, in a case reportedly linked to an illicit relationship.

The case, referred to as the Banihal triple murder, was solved following the arrest of Anil Kumar, a resident of West Champaran in Bihar.

As per officials, the accused allegedly killed 30-year-old Dhanmati Devi and her two minor children, all residents of East Champaran, Bihar. Their bodies were recovered from beneath a culvert along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH) in the Rattanbass area of Banihal on September 8.

The recovery of the bodies sent shockwaves across the region, prompting the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) by the Jammu and Kashmir Police to probe the case. The SIT was headed by SDPO Banihal Manjeet Singh.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ramban Arun Gupta, during a press briefing, informed that the SIT utilised a combination of human intelligence, technical surveillance, and scientific analysis to identify and trace the accused.

Cloudburst triggers massive destruction in Himachal’s Kinnaur, vehicles swept away

New Delhi, Sep 19: A devastating cloudburst struck Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district causing severe flooding and destruction in Thach village.

The incident, which occurred around 12:10 A.M. on Friday, led to a sudden surge in three adjoining mountain streams, sweeping away two vehicles and damaging fields, orchards, and homes.

Locals reported that residents fled their houses in panic and rushed towards nearby forested areas for safety as the torrents surged through the village.

Vehicles belonging to Praveen Moyan and Hari Bisht were among those washed away in the deluge. In Mastan village, parts of homes and a cowshed were swept into the floodwaters.

Several orchards were destroyed, and the houses of villagers Ranveer and three others are reportedly on the verge of collapse.

In the state capital, Shimla, a landslide near Edward School disrupted traffic and forced the closure of the city’s vital Circular Road. Meanwhile, a three-storey house collapsed in the Karevathi area of Kumarsain, further highlighting the widespread impact of heavy rainfall across the state.

So far, the monsoon-related disasters have claimed 424 lives in Himachal Pradesh, with damages across the state mounting each day.

Earlier this week, on September 17, four people were killed and six went missing as flash floods and landslides struck various parts of the state. Over 650 roads, including three National Highways remain blocked, crippling connectivity and access to essential services like electricity and drinking water.

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has declared Himachal Pradesh a disaster-hit state, estimating cumulative damages at over Rs 20,000 crore over the past three years. The state has appealed to the Centre for urgent financial assistance and comprehensive relief support.

Just days earlier, on September 16, another cloudburst in Mandi district wreaked havoc in Dharampur, washing away several HRTC buses, private vehicles, and submerging homes and shops. Locals described the scene as worse than the 2015 floods, with the Saun rivulet overflowing and inundating vast areas.

Relentless rains continue to batter the hill state, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake and pushing both the administration and residents to the brink.

Rahul Gandhi hails Gen Z as guardians of democracy

Rahul Gandhi hails Gen Z as guardians of democracy

New Delhi, Sep 18: In a stirring message posted on X, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi praised India’s Gen Z as the vanguard of democratic values and constitutional integrity.

His statement comes amid growing youth-led activism across South Asia and signals a strategic alignment with younger voters ahead of the 2026 general elections.

“The youth of the country, the students of the country, the Gen Z will save the constitution, protect democracy and stop vote theft. I always stand with them,” Rahul Gandhi wrote, positioning himself as an ally of India’s digitally native generation.

The post reflects the Congress MP’s on-going effort to connect with younger demographics, who are increasingly vocal on issues ranging from electoral transparency to social justice.

By invoking Gen Z’s role in “saving the Constitution”, the LoP Lok Sabha taps into a broader narrative of youth empowerment and civic responsibility. Political analysts suggest that Rahul Gandhi’s message is not just symbolic — it’s tactical.

With Gen Z comprising a significant portion of first-time voters, their support could prove decisive in upcoming elections. His emphasis on “vote theft” also echoes past allegations of electoral malpractice, a theme the Congress party has repeatedly raised.

The timing of the post is notable.

Across the region, youth movements have gained momentum.

In Nepal, Gen Z-led protests recently forced political resignations, while in Bangladesh, student-led campaigns have challenged government policies.

Rahul Gandhi’s post appears to draw inspiration from these uprisings, framing Indian youth as agents of democratic renewal.

Supporters of the Congress MP lauded the message, calling it a “clarion call” for youth engagement.

Critics, however, dismissed it as political posturing, questioning the Congress party’s track record on youth inclusion.

Still, the post has sparked widespread discussion online, with hashtags like #GenZForDemocracy trending briefly.

Whether the former Congress chief’s outreach translates into electoral gains remains to be seen, but one thing is clear; India’s youth are no longer passive observers—they are emerging as a potent political force.

US vetoes UN Security Council resolution demanding immediate Gaza ceasefire and hostage release

US vetoes UN Security Council resolution demanding immediate Gaza ceasefire and hostage release

United Nations, Sep 19: The United States once again vetoed a UN Security Council resolution Thursday that had demanded an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, saying that the effort did not go far enough in condemning Hamas.

The 14 other members of the United Nations’ most powerful body voted in favor of the resolution, which described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as “catastrophic” and called on Israel to lift all restrictions on the delivery of aid to the 2.1 million Palestinians in the territory.

“US opposition to this resolution will come as no surprise,” Morgan Ortagus, a senior US policy adviser, said before the vote. “It fails to condemn Hamas or recognise Israel’s right to defend itself, and it wrongly legitimises the false narratives benefiting Hamas, which have sadly found currency in this council.”

She added that other council members “ignored” US warnings about the “unacceptable” language and instead adopted “performative action designed to draw a veto.”

The outcome further highlights US and Israeli isolation on the world stage over the nearly two-year war in Gaza. The vote came just days before the annual gathering of world leaders at the UN General Assembly, where Gaza will be a major topic and major US allies are expected to recognise an independent Palestinian state. It is a largely symbolic move vehemently opposed by Israel and the US, dividing the Trump administration from allies including the UK and France.

The resolution, drafted by the council’s 10 elected members who serve two-year terms, goes further than previous drafts to highlight what it calls the “deepening of suffering” of Palestinian civilians.

“I can understand the anger and frustration and disappointment of the Palestinian people who might be watching this session of the Security Council, hoping that there is some help in the pipeline, and this nightmare could be brought to an end,” said Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian ambassador to the UN “I can imagine the anger and frustration that it did not happen.”

Algeria, one of the leaders of the resolution, also expressed dismay at another failed council action for Gaza, apologising to Palestinians for not doing enough to save civilians’ lives.

Despite the effort failing to pass, Algeria’s UN ambassador, Amar Bendjama, said: “14 courageous members of this Security Council raised their voice. They have acted with conscience and in the cause of the international public opinion.”

Pakistan’s ambassador called the vote, which took place during the 10,000th meeting of the Security Council, “a dark moment.”

Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the UN, blasted the new effort, saying it would “not release the hostages and will not bring security to the region.”

“Israel will continue to fight Hamas and protect its citizens, even if the Security Council prefers to turn a blind eye to terrorism,” he said in a statement.

The effort reiterated demands from previous versions, including the release of all hostages held by Hamas and other militant groups following their October 7, 2023, surprise attack in southern Israel that launched the war in Gaza.

In opposing similar resolutions since November, the US had complained that the demands, including a ceasefire, were not directly linked to the unconditional release of hostages and would only embolden Hamas militants.

The new resolution expressed “deep alarm” after a report released last month by the world’s leading authority on food crises said Gaza City has become gripped by famine, and that it’s likely to spread across the territory without a ceasefire and an end to restrictions on humanitarian aid.

Israeli forces have pressed on with a new ground offensive in Gaza City. The latest Israeli operation, which started Tuesday, further escalates a conflict that has roiled the Middle East and likely pushes any ceasefire further out of reach.

The Israeli military, which says it wants to “destroy Hamas’ military infrastructure,” hasn’t given a timeline for the offensive, but there were indications it could take months.

That same day, a team of independent experts commissioned by the UN Human Rights Council concluded that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, issuing a report that called on the international community to end it and take steps to punish those responsible for it.

Last week, the UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to support a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict and urged Israel to commit to a Palestinian state.

The US veto of the resolution comes as about half of Americans say the Israeli military response in the Gaza Strip has “gone too far,” according to the survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. That’s up from November 2023, when 40 per cent said Israel’s military action had gone too far.

But at the same time, Americans overall, particularly Republicans, are less likely to say that negotiating a ceasefire should be a high priority for the US government than they were just a few months ago when the US was holding ceasefire talks with Hamas.

Chief Secy seeks guidance of NITI Aayog on Tele-ICU setup in new GMCs

CS pushes forward J&K’s IT revolution with BISAG-N

Srinagar, Sep 18: Chief Secretary, Atal Dulloo, today held a detailed discussion with Member, NITI Aayog, Dr V.K. Paul, on the establishment of Tele-ICU facilities across the newly established Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) in the Union Territory of J&K.

During the interaction, Dr Paul shared valuable insights and highlighted successful Tele-ICU models being implemented across the country by leading health technology providers such as Apollo Tele Health, Medanta, Cloudphysician, and Health Net.

He emphasized the importance of studying these models to identify suitable strategies for J&K hospitals.

Dr. Paul further advised that the needs and aspirations of individual hospitals, as well as their existing infrastructure, must be carefully assessed before rolling out the Tele-ICU initiative. He underscored the significance of capacity building and staff training, which would be critical to ensuring the success of such a technology-driven healthcare model in the UT.

Expressing gratitude to Dr Paul for his guidance, the Chief Secretary reiterated the UT administration’s commitment to adopting innovative healthcare solutions. He highlighted that J&K is working towards establishing Tele-ICU facilities under the hub-and-spoke model, enabling 24×7 critical care monitoring and expert consultation. Under this model, newly established GMCs would serve as spokes, linked to a robust hub and command centre within the UT.

The Chief Secretary also proposed sending an expert team from J&K to leading healthcare institutions in the country to study the functioning of Tele-ICUs and their command centres. He noted that while J&K has unique challenges due to its difficult topography and human resource constraints, the administration is determined to tailor solutions that fit the region’s requirements.
