Flights to London, Paris cancelled; glitch hits San Francisco-Mumbai flight

Now, Air India cancels Delhi-Paris flight due to an ‘issue’

Mumbai/Kolkata, June 17: Troubles continued at Air India, which is facing the biggest crisis since Tata group bought the airline three and a half years back, with its flights to London and Paris on Tuesday being cancelled for varied reasons and a glitch forcing fliers on San Francisco-Mumbai flight to deplane during a stopover.

While Air India cancelled the Delhi-Paris flight after some problems were detected during pre-flight checks, its Ahmedabad-London one was cancelled due to unavailability of aircraft, the airline said.

Separately, Air India terminated its San Francisco-Mumbai flight at its scheduled stopover at Kolkata early on Tuesday morning after one of its engines developed a technical snag.

The disruptions came as investigators probe what caused a London-bound Air India flight to crash in Ahmedabad shortly after take-off on June 12, killing more than 270 people onboard and on the ground.

The incident dealt a severe blow to the airline and its owner Tata, which prides itself for producing luxury cars to salt and software as well as assembly of iPhone.

In a statement, Air India said flight AI143 from Delhi to Paris has been cancelled after “mandatory pre-flight checks identified an issue which is being presently addressed”.

It did not detail the issue that came to light during pre-flight checks.

“However, in view of the flight coming under the restrictions on night operations at Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) airport, the said flight has been cancelled,” Air India said.

The airline said it is providing hotel accommodation and also offering full refunds on cancellations or complimentary rescheduling if opted by the passengers.

Air India also said it is making alternative arrangements to fly passengers to their destination at the earliest.

The airline, which on Monday resumed flights from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick with a new code AI159 instead of AI171 of the flight that crashed on June 12, had to cancel the flight on Tuesday due to unavailability of aircraft.

It denied claims that a technical snag led to the cancellation and maintained that it has made alternative arrangements for the affected passengers to their destination and offered full refunds on cancellations or complimentary rescheduling if opted by them.

Air India’s official website confirmed that the AI-159 flight from Ahmedabad to the Gatwick airport in London stands cancelled after being rescheduled. The plane was scheduled to depart at 3 pm from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA).

“Flight AI-159 from Ahmedabad to Gatwick (London) has been cancelled today (Tuesday) due to the unavailability of the aircraft, resulting from airspace restrictions and additional precautionary checks, leading to longer than usual turnaround of aircraft, and not due to any technical snag as claimed,” an AI spokesperson said.

“We regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers and have made alternative arrangements to fly them to their destination. We are providing hotel accommodation and also offering full refunds on cancellations or complimentary rescheduling if opted by passengers,” he added.

Consequently, flight AI-170 from London (Gatwick) to Amritsar on June 17 stands cancelled, the airline said.

Iran has closed its airspace due to its ongoing war with Israel, affecting flights headed to Europe.

AI’s direct flight from Ahmedabad to London was earlier known by its assigned code ‘AI-171’.

Airport sources said the flight having code AI-171 was suspended after the horrific crash which claimed 270 lives, including 29 people on the ground.

It resumed operation on Monday (June 16), five days after the crash, with a new flight code AI-159, said an airport official.

Separately, an Air India flight from San Francisco to Mumbai via Kolkata suffered a technical snag early Tuesday, requiring passengers to deboard during a scheduled halt at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport.

The termination led to chaotic scenes at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport as the 211 passengers on the Boeing 777-200 LR tried to convince officials to let them reach their destination at the earliest.

The Tata Group-owned carrier did not issue an official statement.

Sources said Air India is making “special arrangements” to fly the stranded passengers to Mumbai. No further details were available.

Usually, the carrier flies directly to Mumbai from San Francisco but the ongoing geopolitical events, including the closure of Pakistani airspace, have led AI to reroute it and take a “technical halt” in Kolkata.

Flight AI-180 landed in Kolkata at the scheduled time of 12.45 am, even though it took off one hour late from San Francisco.

According to sources, a technical issue was detected during routine post-landing checks, and the airline decided to do a comprehensive check.

It was scheduled to depart for Mumbai at 2 am, but passengers came to know of the problems only after 2.40 am when the crew announced there was a problem with the left engine, according to a PTI reporter who was on the flight.

However, this announcement was accompanied by a specific promise, that the snag will take up to 25 minutes to get sorted, the reporter said.

However, as the clock ticked by, distraught passengers having connecting flights from Mumbai started enquiring about the progress of the work with the cabin crew, but there was no clear response, the reporter said.

With the Ahmedabad accident being fresh, some passengers also said a delay is better than a mishap, while some wondered how an aircraft which had travelled thousands of kilometres could face problems in the last leg from Kolkata to Mumbai.

The next announcement came at 4.20 am when the pilots sought another 15-20 minutes for rectification of the problem.

The engineers could be seen working on the left engine even as a drizzle continued, but the problem persisted. Finally, around 5.20 am, the pilots announced that a resolution was not possible and asked all passengers to deplane.

After disembarking and passing the mandatory immigration, collecting baggage and passing the customs channels, the passengers were asked to sit in a designated area.

A few passengers pleaded with officials asking for the earliest option to travel to Mumbai. Some got lucky, while others continued to wait.

Finally, an Air India official announced that Mumbai-bound flights were mostly full and convinced a bulk of the passengers to check into a hotel.

At least 45 Palestinians killed while waiting for aid trucks in Gaza, health officials say

At least 45 Palestinians killed while waiting for aid trucks in Gaza, health officials say

Khan Younis (Gaza Strip), June 17: At least 45 Palestinians were killed in the Gaza Strip while waiting for UN and commercial trucks to enter the territory with desperately needed food, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry and a local hospital.

The circumstances of the killings were not immediately clear. It did not appear to be related to a new Israeli- and US-supported aid delivery network that rolled out last month and has been marred by controversy and violence.

Palestinians say Israeli forces have repeatedly opened fire on crowds trying to reach food distribution points run by a separate US and Israeli-backed aid group since the centres opened last month. Local health officials say scores have been killed and hundreds wounded.

In those instances, the Israeli military has acknowledged firing warning shots at people it said had approached its forces in a suspicious manner.

Israel says the new system is designed to prevent Hamas from siphoning off aid to fund its militant activities.

UN agencies and major aid groups deny there is any major diversion of aid and have rejected the new system, saying it can’t meet the mounting needs in Gaza and that it violates humanitarian principles by allowing Israel to control who has access to aid. Experts have warned of widespread famine in Gaza.

The UN-run network has delivered aid across Gaza throughout the 20-month Israel-Hamas war, but has faced major obstacles since Israel loosened a total blockade it had imposed from early March until mid-May. UN officials say Israeli military restrictions, a breakdown of law and order, and widespread looting make it difficult to deliver the aid that Israel has allowed in.

Israel’s military campaign since October 2023 has killed over 55,300 Palestinians, more than half of them women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Its count doesn’t distinguish between civilians and combatants.

Israel launched its campaign aiming to destroy Hamas after the group’s Oct 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel, in which militants killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking another 251 hostage. The militants still hold more than 50 hostages, fewer than half of them alive, after most of the rest were released in ceasefire agreements or other deals.

Gold declines Rs 1,200 per 10 g amid weak global trends

Gold climbs Rs 1,400 to Rs 96,450 per 10 g; silver jumps Rs 1,000

New Delhi, June 17: Gold prices declined by Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,00,170 per 10 grams in the national capital on Tuesday due to continuous selling by jewellers and stockists in line with weak global trends, according to the All India Sarafa Association.

The precious metal of 99.9 per cent purity had closed at Rs 1,01,370 per 10 grams in the previous market session.

Gold of 99.5 per cent purity dipped below the Rs 1 lakh mark, by falling Rs 1,100 to Rs 99,450 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes). It had settled at Rs 1,00,550 per 10 grams on Monday.

“Gold corrected further on Tuesday as traders reevaluated the likelihood of a full-scale regional war between Israel and Iran. This shift follows reports suggesting that Iran is actively pursuing a diplomatic resolution to its escalating conflict with Israel.

“The potential for a fragile truce has fostered a bearish sentiment among gold traders,” Saumil Gandhi, Senior Analyst – Commodities at HDFC Securities, said.

However, silver prices went up by Rs 100 to Rs 1,07,200 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes) on Tuesday. The white metal had ended at Rs 1,07,100 per kg in the previous market close.

Globally, spot gold was trading lower at USD 3,380.65 per ounce.

“Gold is trading negative despite escalation of conflict in the Middle East and the precious metal witnessed profit taking at higher levels by the investors,” Rahul Kalantri, Vice-President, Commodities at Mehta Equities, said.

Meanwhile, spot silver went up 0.44 per cent to USD 36.47 per ounce in the international markets.

Kalantri further said silver prices also came off day’s high ahead of the US Federal Reserve’s monetary policy meeting. However, global uncertainty and geopolitical tensions could support the prices of precious metals.

Abans Financial Services’ Chief Executive Officer Chintan Mehta said, “On the economic front, investors will watch for US macro data, including May’s retail sales and industrial production data later in the day to gauge the strength of the US economy”.

Now, Air India cancels Delhi-Paris flight due to an ‘issue’

Now, Air India cancels Delhi-Paris flight due to an ‘issue’

New Delhi, June 17: In a series of cancellations, Air India on Tuesday announced the axing of Flight AI 143 from Delhi to Paris, after mandatory pre-flight checks identified an issue “which is being presently addressed”.

Consequently, “flight AI 142 from Paris to Delhi on June 18, 2025, also stands cancelled”, the carrier said in a statement.

“In view of the flight coming under the restrictions on night operations at Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) airport, the said flight has been cancelled. We regret the inconvenience caused to our passengers and are making alternative arrangements to fly them to their destination at the earliest,” the statement read.

The carrier further stated that they are providing hotel accommodation and also offering full refunds on cancellations or complimentary rescheduling if opted for by the passengers.

Earlier in the day, Flight AI-159 — Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner — from Ahmedabad to London-Gatwick was cancelled due to the unavailability of the aircraft, “resulting from airspace restrictions and additional precautionary checks, leading to longer than usual turnaround of aircraft, and not due to any technical snag as claimed”, said Air India.

The aircraft, which was scheduled to depart at 1.10 p.m., was grounded hours before take-off after routine pre-flight checks flagged the issue.

The abrupt cancellation caused chaos at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, with scores of international passengers stranded, many of them already reeling from anxiety sparked by last week’s tragedy.

This was the second cancellation on the Ahmedabad–London route in just four days. The previous flight on June 14 was also scrapped following the crash, which killed 241 people on board and many others on the ground, bringing the toll till now to 270.

Since then, Air India has retired the flight number AI-171, replacing it with AI-159 as a symbolic reset.

An Air India Flight from San Francisco to Mumbai via Kolkata was also halted at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata early Tuesday morning after a technical snag was detected in one of its engines.

According to reports, the Director General of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) also summoned an urgent virtual meeting with Air India and Air India Express officials.

Union Home Secretary arrives in Srinagar to review Amarnath Yatra security preparedness

Union Home Secretary arrives in Srinagar to review Amarnath Yatra security preparedness

Srinagar, June 17: Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan arrived here on Tuesday to review the security preparedness for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra that starts on July 3.

Officials said the Union Home Secretary will review security arrangements for the Amarnath Yatra and also review the prevailing security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Union Home Secretary is chairing the review meeting at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) in Srinagar.

J&K Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, DGP Nalin Prabhat, GoC of the Army’s Srinagar headquartered 15 corps, Lt General Prashant Srivastava, ADG (CID) Nitish Kumar, senior officers of CAPFs and officers of other intelligence agencies are attending the meeting.

The annual Amarnath Yatra to the holy cave shrine situated 3888 metres above sea level will last for 52 days this year, beginning on July 3 and ending on August 9.

Pilgrims approach the cave shrine either through the longer traditional Pahalgam route or the shorter Baltal route. Those using the Pahalgam route in Anantnag district reach the cave shrine after three days, while those using the Baltal route in Ganderbal district return to the base camp the same day after having ‘darshan’ inside the cave shrine.

The cave shrine houses an ice stalagmite structure that wanes and waxes with the phases of the moon. Devotees believe that the ice stalagmite structure symbolises the mythical powers of Lord Shiva.

This year’s Amarnath Yatra is taking place in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, and the authorities are taking no chances with the security arrangements put in place for the Yatra.

A multi-layered security manned by the Army, CAPFs and the J&K Police is already in place at the cave shrine, base camps and transit camps in addition to the route right from Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas in Jammu (starting point) for escorted convoys carrying the pilgrims to Baltal and Pahalgam.

Authorities have made arrangements for RFID tracking of yatris, real-time weather alerts, emergency evacuation protocols, and dedicated health camps to ensure the smooth conduct of the yatra. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is a technology that uses radio waves to identify and track tags attached to objects.

Officials said that all aspects, including the minute details of security, have been attended to and there is a complete synergy between the army, CAPFs and the local police, all of whom are working as a well-oiled machine to ensure that every aspect of security is taken care of.

London-bound Air India flight cancelled in Ahmedabad due to technical snag

Air India flight from San Francisco to Mumbai suffers technical snag, passengers deboarded in Kolkata

Ahmedabad, June 17: An Air India flight, slated to leave the Ahmedabad airport for London, was cancelled on Tuesday, after a technical glitch was detected.

The airliner decided to call off the scheduled Ahmedabad-London flight after inputs were received about technical problems in the final hours before take-off.

The Air India Flight AI 159 was cancelled minutes before take-off. The plane with more than 200 passengers on board was slated to take off at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

The development assumes significance as it comes days after Air India’s Dreamliner AI-171, also headed to London, crashed soon after take-off from the city airport on June 12, leading to more than 200 casualties.

The ill-fated plane that crashed into a medical college hostel near the hospital resulted in the death of more than 270 people, including 241 out of 242 passengers and some MBBS students.

The catastrophic Air India plane crash sent shockwaves across the aviation industry while leaving the entire nation shell-shocked, and also prompted multiple questions about the aircraft’s safety and management protocols.

After the devastating plane crash in Ahmedabad five days ago, multiple incidents of malfunction, technical snags and plane cancellations have been reported.

Early in the day, an Air India flight from San Francisco to Mumbai suffered a technical glitch in one of its engines and was briefly grounded for safety inspections. All passengers on the flight were asked to deplane at the Kolkata airport, where the flight had arrived for a layover.

A day ago, an Air India Express flight from Delhi to Ranchi was diverted back to the national capital soon after taking off, due to a suspected technical issue.

Before that, an Air India flight returned to Hong Kong after it reportedly developed technical issues mid-air.

The airline operator, however, said in a statement that the New Delhi-bound plane landed in Hong Kong safely and was undergoing checks “as a matter of abundant precaution”.

One survivor found in Air India plane crash: Ahmedabad Police

Gandhinagar, June 17: Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi confirmed that the DNA samples of 144 victims in the Air India plane crash has been successfully matched as of 12 pm on Tuesday.

In a post on X, Sanghavi said, “Air India crash update: As of 12 pm, 144 DNA samples have been matched.”

The testing was being done by teams from the FSL and National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU).

Earlier on Monday, Sanghavi confirmed that DNA samples of 125 victims in the Air India plane crash had been successfully matched, and families of 124 deceased had been contacted. The mortal remains of 83 victims were handed over to their families.

The minister visited the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Gandhinagar, where DNA testing of the deceased was being conducted.

Speaking to the mediapersons, Rakesh Joshi said,”…The death toll of BJ Medical College students stands at 4. It has not gone up.”

He also said that Vishwas, the only survivor from the crash, is in stable condition and slowly improving.

“Vishwas’s (the lone survivor of the flight crash) condition is stable and improving gradually,” Joshi said.
