Experts warn of growing burden of Multiple Sclerosis in Kashmir during SKIMS Grand Round

Srinagar, Sep 15: Experts at Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), during the weekly Grand Rounds held every Saturday, expressed deep concern over the increasing burden of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in Kashmir.

The session highlighted the importance of early recognition of MS, its significant impact on young people particularly women and the urgent need for timely diagnosis and treatment to prevent repeated episodes of disability.

Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune neurological disease leading to inflammation, nerve damage with symptoms like numbness, vision problems, and fatigue.

The Department of Neurology, SKIMS, under the clinical leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Ravouf Asimi, Head of the Department of Neurology, conducted the Grand Round on the theme “From Clinical Patterns to Cytokine Pathways: Multiple Sclerosis, its Differentials, and the Role of IL-18.”

A key highlight of the event was SKIMS’ contribution to the Indian Multiple Sclerosis Registry and Network (IMSRN), a national database mapping MS across India. Data contributed by SKIMS has provided valuable insights into MS trends in Kashmir while also complementing national figures.

The session further discussed research on Interleukin-18 (IL-18), an inflammatory molecule implicated in MS. Findings from SKIMS indicate that IL-18 may play a role in disease development within the local population, contributing to the global understanding of this condition.

Prof. Asimi also emphasized the potential of advanced treatment options, including stem cell transplantation, as promising strategies not only for MS but also for other neurodegenerative disorders, with the aim of improving patient outcomes and quality of life.

Speaking on the occasion, Director SKIMS & EOSG, Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie, stressed the need for enhancing diagnostic and investigative profiles for rare neurological disorders. He also underlined the importance of research on other debilitating conditions such as Motor Neuron Disease (MND), which affects younger populations and currently has no definitive cure. Prof. Ganie assured full institutional support for research in these critical areas and lauded the Department of Neurology for its commendable contributions, including publications in world-class journals.

The event concluded with a call for stronger participation in national registries, expanded collaborative research, and adoption of innovative therapies to address complex neurological diseases.

SKIMS Neurology continues to remain at the forefront of neurological care and research, bringing cutting-edge scientific advances closer to patients in the valley. (KNC)

Kiren Rijiju hails SC's order on Waqf Act

New Delhi, Sep 15: Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday welcomed the Supreme Court’s interim order on the Waqf (Amendment) Act, saying the spirit of the verdict was in favour of “democratic India” and assured that the Centre would re-examine the provision requiring five years of practising Islam for the creation of Waqf.

The apex court, in its interim order on Monday, declined to stay the Waqf Act in its entirety, noting that a statute carries a presumption of constitutionality and can be stayed only in the rarest of cases.

However, a Bench comprising the Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai and Justice A.G. Masih stayed the provision mandating five years of practising Islam for the creation of Waqf, until rules are framed.

Reacting to the order, Rijiju told reporters, “I am satisfied with the judgment of the Supreme Court. This will benefit the poor, homeless and backwards classes of Muslims. Since the Supreme Court is the top court, it will surely have an impact. In a way, the decision has upheld the one that was made in Parliament. We will go through the provision of the practising Muslim once again.”

He criticised the Opposition and those protesting the Act, asserting that challenging the authority of Parliament was not justified.

“I have not read the judgment yet; however, the spirit of the order is in favour of democratic India. Some people just unnecessarily challenge the Parliament’s authority in the Supreme Court. One can challenge the provision but not the authority of the Parliament,” he said.

The Supreme Court also stayed the provision that allowed a designated officer to decide whether a Waqf property encroached on government land, ruling that entrusting such powers to an executive officer would breach the principle of separation of powers.

Additionally, the court directed that until adjudication by the tribunal takes place, no third-party rights can be created against any parties involved.

Grand Mufti urges govt to ensure uninterrupted highway, dedicated freight train for Kashmir’s fruit industry

Srinagar, Sept 15: The Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir has expressed grave concern over the hardships faced by fruit growers in the Valley due to recurring blockades and disruptions along the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway, calling for urgent intervention by the Centre and the UT administration.

In a press statement issued on Monday, the Grand Mufti said the highway—considered the lifeline of Kashmir’s horticulture sector—is frequently closed or poorly maintained, leading to massive delays in the transportation of perishable fruit consignments. He said entire loads of apples, pears, and other produce were suffering damage or losing value due to prolonged transit times, leaving thousands of families in financial distress.

Highlighting the urgent need for alternatives, the Grand Mufti appealed to the Government of India to facilitate a dedicated freight train service from Baramulla to Delhi’s Fruit Mandi, enabling uninterrupted carriage of consignments without repeated loading and unloading stops. He stressed that arrangements should also be made to collect produce from other parts of the Valley to ensure fairness and efficiency.

“The fruit industry is the backbone of Kashmir’s economy, and any negligence towards safeguarding this vital sector directly threatens the livelihood of lakhs of people. Timely and decisive action is not only an economic necessity but also a moral responsibility,” the statement read.

The Grand Mufti urged the Union Ministers of Transport, Defence, and Agriculture, as well as the Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir and the Chief Engineer of Project Beacon, to take immediate cognizance of the crisis.

Reaffirming solidarity with fruit growers, the Office of the Grand Mufti appealed for swift measures to ensure both free road passage and reliable railway connectivity so that Kashmir’s produce can reach markets across the country on time.

SC refuses to stay entire waqf law, stalls certain provisions

SC to hear on July 24 Maharashtra govt’s plea against Bombay HC verdict SC-Train blast

New Delhi, Sep 15: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to stay the Waqf law, saying there was a “presumption” of constitutionality in its favour, but stalled the operation of certain provisions, including the one which said only those who are practising Islam for the last five years can create a waqf.

Pronouncing an interim order, a bench comprising Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih said, “We have considered prima facie challenge to each of the sections and found no case was made out to stay the entire statute.”

The top court, however, stayed the provision which said that persons practising Islam for the last five years can only create a waqf.

It also stayed the provision which enabled an officer designated by the government to determine the dispute whether the Waqf property has encroached on a government property.

“We have held presumption is always on constitutionality of statute and in rarest it can be done. We have found that the entire Act is challenged, but the basic challenge was sections 3(r), 3C, 14,…,” the CJI said.

It directed that as far as possible the Chief Executive Officer of the Waqf Board should be a Muslim, while refusing to stay the amendment allowing the appointment of a non-Muslim as a CEO.

It also said the number of non-Muslims in state waqf boards and central waqf councils cannot exceed three.

The detailed judgement is awaited.

The top court on May 22 had reserved its order on three key issues, including the power to denotify properties declared as “waqf by courts, waqf-by-user or waqf by deed”, which cropped up during the hearing of pleas challenging the validity of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025.

Pakistan lodges protest with ACC after Indian players refuse handshake post Asia Cup match

Pakistan lodges protest with ACC after Indian players refuse handshake post Asia Cup match

Dubai, Sep 15: Pakistan have lodged a protest with the Asian Cricket Council over the Indian players’ refusal to shake hands with them following their Asia Cup game here, labelling it “unsporting” and escalating the tension between the two sides.

In a statement late on Sunday night, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said India’s actions were against the spirit of the game after the seven-wicket win for the Suryakumar Yadav-led unit.

“Team manager Naveed Cheema lodged a strong protest against Indian players’ behaviour of not shaking hands. It was deemed as unsporting and against the sport of the game. As a protest we did not send our captain to the post match ceremony,” read a PCB statement.

The series of events could be repeated as both teams could meet twice more in the remainder of the tournament.

Suryakumar had earlier justified the decision to not shake hands with the opposition, saying it was their way of showing solidarity with the families of the Pahalgam terrorist attack victims.

Twenty six Indian tourists were killed by Pakistan-backed terrorists, prompting India to launch Operation Sindoor in retaliation.

“We took a team call. We had come only to play. We had given them a reply. Some things are beyond sportsmanship. We dedicate this victory to our armed forces who took part in ‘Operation Sindoor’ and stand with families of the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack,” said Suryakumar after the emphatic win.

The arch-rivals faced each other on a cricket ground for the first time since the dastardly attack in Kashmir and the ensuing military action by India on terror infrastructure across Pakistan in May.

It turned out to be a no contest with India outplaying Pakistan in all departments.

Even at the toss, Suryakumar did not interact or shake hands with his Pakistan counterpart Salman Ali Agha.

That also did not go down well with the Pakistan team management and post the no handshake incident at the end of the game, Salman boycotted the match presentation ceremony.

“We wanted to shake hands but disappointed that the opposition didn’t do that. Disappointed with the way we played, but we wanted to shake hands,” Paksitan head coach Mike Hesson said later.

“Salman not coming for the post-match presentation was cause and effect after what happened,” he added.

On what transpired at the toss, the PCB added: “The match referee Andy Pycroft had asked captain Salman Ali Agha, at the time of the toss, not to shake hands with his Indian counterpart.

“The Pakistan team management has lodged a protest, calling the behaviour against the spirit of sports.”
