Delhi High Court pulls up Centre over delay in disability panel appointments

New Delhi, Feb 21: The Delhi High Court sharply criticised the Central government for failing to fill vacancies of the Chief Commissioner of Persons with Disabilities and the Chairperson of the National Trust for Welfare of Persons with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities, Bar & Bench reported.

A Bench led by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia was hearing a 2018 PIL in Sanjay Verma and Anr vs Union of India and Ors. when it expressed displeasure over the posts remaining vacant since 2019.

The Centre attributed the delay to efforts to find suitable candidates, stating that the Secretary of the Department of Disability Affairs is holding additional charge. The Court questioned the explanation and asked whether a seven-year delay could be justified.

In its order, the Bench said it hoped the Centre would make adequate and speedy efforts to fill the posts and directed it to file an affidavit detailing the steps taken. The matter is listed for hearing on April 9.
