Srinagar, Sep 30: Continuing its efforts to eradicate the menace of drugs from the society, Anantnag Police achieved a major success by arresting a drug peddler and recovering a huge consignment of narcotic substance in Bijbehara area.
An official said that Police Station Bijbehara received credible information from reliable sources regarding the illegal possession of narcotic substances by one individual, namely Riyaz Ahmad Mir, son of Abdul Khaliq Mir, resident of Katriteng, Bijbehara. It was learnt that the accused had concealed a large quantity of contraband substance in his residential house with the intention of selling it to local youth, thereby promoting drug abuse in the area.
He said that acting swiftly on this information, a case FIR No. 182/2025 under Sections 8/20 of the NDPS Act was registered at Police Station Bijbehara, and investigation was taken up.
During the course of investigation, a police team from PS Bijbehara conducted a raid at the residence of the accused. During the search operation, a huge quantity of cannabis leaves mixed with seeds and covers, weighing approximately 25.200 kilograms, was recovered from the house. The recovered contraband was sealed on the spot as per procedure, official said.
The accused Riyaz Ahmad Mir has been arrested and taken into custody. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the source of the contraband and to identify other individuals involved in the drug trade.
Anantnag Police urged the general public to come forward with any information related to drug trafficking or substance abuse in their areas, and added the identity of informants will be kept confidential.
