Srinagar, May 25: Shahid Shafiee, an innovator and businessman from Srinagar, has been awarded a patent for a groundbreaking branch bending clip that promises to transform orchard management and enhance fruit yields, particularly in apple cultivation.
The patented device, developed through a research collaboration with the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), Awantipora, is designed to hold tree branches at an optimal 90-degree angle from the trunk. This positioning significantly improves light penetration and air circulation—two critical factors in achieving better fruit quality and productivity.
Made from durable plastic or metal, the clip offers a simple yet effective solution for orchardists, especially in regions like Kashmir where apple farming is a vital part of the economy.
“While initially created for apple trees, the clip can also be used with other fruit-bearing trees requiring structured branch training,” said Shafiee.
“This innovation was born out of real challenges faced in our orchards. We aimed to create a simple, affordable solution that could help farmers increase yield without harming the trees. It’s rewarding to see it making a difference on the ground.”
Shafiee’s innovation has already demonstrated real-world success, with over 100,000 units sold and in use across orchards. The clips are manufactured under his company Realtech Pvt. Ltd., which focuses on developing agricultural tools rooted in local needs and scientific efficiency.
Recognising the invention’s impact, the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Jammu & Kashmir, has praised the innovation as a step forward in encouraging homegrown technological solutions that support the region’s agrarian economy.
This achievement not only highlights Shahid Shafiee’s entrepreneurial vision but also exemplifies how grassroots innovations can lead to scalable, sustainable outcomes in agriculture.
