Srinagar, May 16: In a significant development, the Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha who is also the Chancellor J&K Universities on Friday re-appointed Prof. Nilofer Khan as the Vice Chancellor (VC) Kashmir University (KU) for a period of two years.
The three-year term of VC KU was set to expire on May 19 of 2025.
The re-appointment of Prof. Nilofer Khan has been made by the LG in exercise of his powers under section 12(6) of the Kashmir and Jammu Universities Act, 1969.
“In exercise of the powers vested in me, under section 12(6) of the Kashmir and Jammu Universities Act, 1969, I Manoj Sinha Chancellor University of Kashmir hereby re-appoint Prof. Nilofer Khanas the Vice Chancellor University of Kashmir for a period of two years with effect from May 19 of 2025, the date of completion of her existing term as the Vice Chancellor, University of Kashmir,” reads an order issued by Chancellor University of Kashmir.
Earlier, she was appointed as the first woman VC at the premiere institution-Kashmir University on May 19 of 2022, replacing earth-scientist Prof Talat Ahmad whose three-year term ended in August 2021.
Prof Nilofar has a teaching experience of more than 30 years and has served the Kashmir University’s corporate life in several important academic and administrative capacities, including Dean College Development Council, Registrar, Dean Faculty of Applied Science and Technology and Director Institute of Home Sciences.
She also holds the distinction of being the first woman Dean Students Welfare of the University and Founder Director, Centre for Women’s Studies and Research.
Earlier in December last year, the Chancellor of the J&K Universities re-appointed Prof. Umesh Rai as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jammu with effect from April 5 of 2025.
On the same day, the Chancellor also extended the term of incumbent Vice Chancellor of the SKUAST-Kashmir Prof Nazir Ahmad Ganaie for two years. The extension was effective from December 16 of 2024.
Meanwhile, re-appointment of Prof. Nilofer Khan has been ordered at a time when the NAAC team is scheduled to visit the Kashmir University for inspection and review the grade of the varsity.
Presently, KU is accredited with an A+ grade by the NAAC. The last visit of the NAAC team was held in May 2019 and the accreditation was valid up to May 2024.
