Baramulla, Oct 30: In a powerful show of solidarity against breast cancer, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla on Thursday organised Pinkayathon 25 — Kashmir’s annual breast cancer awareness event.
The mega event, held under the leadership of Principal Prof. Dr Majid Jahangir, brought together medical professionals, students, ASHA and Anganwadi workers, nursing staff, and district health officials to promote early detection and community education on breast cancer.
The programme was inaugurated by Prof. Dr Majid Jahangir, in the presence of Dr Parvaiz Masoodi, Medical Superintendent; Prof. Dr Shafqat Ahmad Lone, Registrar Academics; and Dr Humaira Bashir, Head of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. A renowned oncologist was the guest speaker for the occasion.
In her welcome address, Dr Humaira Bashir highlighted the growing need for awareness and screening at the grassroots level, noting that breast cancer remains one of the most prevalent health challenges among women.
Principal Prof. Jahangir and other speakers underscored the importance of early diagnosis, timely medical intervention, and collective community engagement in reducing breast cancer mortality.
Dr Shabnum Bashir, in her technical session, detailed the pathology of breast cancer and emphasised the critical role of mammography in early detection. A presentation by Miss Tabish further educated participants on diagnostic procedures and clinical protocols.
The event concluded with the formation of a human pink ribbon and a symbolic walkathon — a gesture that united participants in spreading awareness and supporting those affected by breast cancer.
Organising Chairpersons Dr Humera Noor and Dr Rafia Aziz expressed gratitude to the Principal, Medical Superintendent, faculty, and all contributors for their support in making Pinkayathon 25 a resounding success.
