New Delhi, Apr 23: Pope Francis’s body has been moved to St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, where people are beginning to pay their final respects. His coffin is now placed in front of the main altar, where it will stay until his funeral on 26 April.
The Pope died on Monday morning at his residence, Casa Santa Marta. A solemn procession carried his body through St Peter’s Square as church bells rang and crowds applauded.
The short procession lasted about 40 minutes. Now inside the Basilica, Pope Francis will lie in state for three days, giving the public a chance to say goodbye. People are already lining up to walk past the open casket and offer their prayers. The funeral will be held on Saturday and is expected to be attended by leaders and dignitaries from around the world.
