Rajouri, July 29: The Congress party leadership has announced that Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is sponsoring the education of 22 children from Jammu and Kashmir’s border district of Poonch. These children belong to families affected by cross-border shelling.
It is pertinent to mention that following Operation Sindoor, a war-like situation had emerged along the Line of Control (LoC), with Poonch town among the worst affected areas. Pakistani shelling had claimed the lives of 13 civilians across the region.
“Rahul Ji, during his visit, had promised to personally do something for these children. He has now fulfilled that promise by sponsoring the education of 22 of them,” said Tariq Hamid Karra, senior Congress leader.
He added that while 22 children have been included in the initial list, the number is expected to increase in the coming days.
Tariq Hamid Karra, who is also the President of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee, arrived in Rajouri and Poonch for a three-day visit. On Tuesday morning, he travelled to Poonch where he chaired an event to formally hand over the financial aid sent by Rahul Gandhi for the children.
“This initiative is a gesture of compassion to ensure that the education of these children is not disrupted,” he said.
MLA Rajouri, Iftikhar Ahmed, also praised the move, calling it a humane decision. He said, “Rahul Gandhi has always empathized with the pain of the common man. This initiative is yet another example of that.”
