Srinagar, July 16: Tesla, the electric vehicle giant led by Elon Musk, has officially entered the Indian market with the launch of its first showroom in Mumbai. The showroom is located at Maker Maxity mall in the Bandra Kurla Complex, one of the city’s premier commercial hubs. Alongside this, Tesla has also set up a service centre and warehouse approximately six kilometres from the showroom to support its operations.
The first model to debut in India is the Model Y, a mid-range luxury electric SUV that will be offered in two variants. The vehicle is being imported from Tesla’s Shanghai factory for now. In the US, the long-range rear-wheel drive version of the Model Y starts at $37,490 (around ₹32.2 lakh), but in India, the price is expected to be nearly double due to a steep 70% import duty. However, prices may become more competitive in the future if Tesla begins local assembly operations.
Tesla Model Y features
The first row of the Tesla Model Y comes with power recline, heated and ventilated seats, and the second row has powered two-way folding and heated seats. It comes with a huge 15.4-inch touchscreen-enabled infotainment system on the front, along with an 8-inch touchscreen in the second row.
The inside of the car has a footwell and door pocket ambient lighting, along with aluminium detailing. You also get a hands-free power open on approach for the trunk with a decent-sized front trunk.
Tesla is providing a warranty of four years or 80,000 km for the Model Y, whichever comes first. Additionally, the battery and drive unit are covered under a separate warranty of eight years or 1,92,000 km. In the Indian market, the Tesla Model Ypete with several premium electric vehicles, including the Mercedes-Benz EQB, BMW iX1, Mercedes-Benz EQA, Volvo EC40, and the Kia EV6.
