New Delhi, Oct 28: US President Donald Trump has not ruled out the possibility of seeking a third term in office, saying he would “love to do it,” BBC reported. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en-route to Japan from Malaysia, Trump dismissed suggestions that he could run as vice-president in 2028, an idea floated by some supporters as a way to bypass constitutional limits where president elect resigns and VP becomes the President, calling it “too cute” and saying it “wouldn’t be right.”

While acknowledging he had not “really thought about” a third run, Trump claimed his poll numbers were “the best” he had ever had. He also named Vice-President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as potential successors, calling them “unstoppable.”

In April, Trump’s official online store started selling a “Trump 2028” hat for $50, adding to speculation about another possible run. Last week, his former adviser Steve Bannon, who still supports him, said there was a “plan” to help Trump win a third term. “Trump is going to be president in 2028, and people should get used to that,” Bannon told The Economist, adding that the plan would be revealed later.

Under the US Constitution’s 22nd Amendment, no president can serve more than two terms. Changing this rule would be extremely difficult. BBC says it would need approval from two-thirds of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, or from two-thirds of state legislatures. After that, 38 states would still have to agree to make it official, a scenario widely seen as unlikely.
