UN unveils classroom toolkit to train next-gen global diplomats

New Delhi, Oct 24: The United Nations has launched a new Model UN Mini-Simulation Toolkit to make global diplomacy more accessible to students and young people worldwide.

The initiative, unveiled on United Nations Day 2025, marks the 80th anniversary of the UN Charter. Developed jointly by the UN Department of Global Communications and the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA), the toolkit aims to bring the workings of the UN directly into classrooms and youth clubs. It offers a simplified yet realistic experience of how international negotiations are conducted, encouraging young people to practise diplomacy, consensus-building, and problem-solving.

The first edition focuses on the United Nations Environment Assembly and its debates on marine plastic litter and microplastics, one of the world’s most urgent environmental challenges. The kit includes a complete set of materials, an educator’s guide, student worksheets, simulation scripts, and background notes, enabling teachers to conduct a full UN-style session.

“As we mark 80 years of the United Nations, this new Model UN toolkit empowers young people to step into the role of global leaders,” said Melissa Fleming, the UN’s Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications. “It teaches them that collaboration across borders is not just how the UN works — it’s how real solutions to the world’s toughest problems are found.”
