Zojila Pass closed for 3rd day after fresh snowfall

Ganderbal, Mar 13: The Zojila Pass on the Srinagar Leh highway remained closed for third day on Friday following fresh snowfall in higher reaches including Zojila, Drass, Minamarg areas.

Officials said that the road has been temporarily closed to traffic, due to fresh snowfall and slippery conditions, despite having stayed open for a record duration this winter. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is actively engaged in snow clearance to restore connectivity between Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir.

An official told Greater Kashmir that the no traffic movement will be allowed on Zojila Pass (Srinagar-Kargil road) as well due to snow accumulation, adding that about 1 ft of fresh snow accumulated on the road. Authorities said the reopening of the highway will depend on the completion of snow clearance operations and a fresh assessment of road safety conditions.

Officials expressed hope that if weather conditions remain favourable, traffic movement on the highway could be restored soon.

MeT department Ladakh in it’s forecast has said that weather will remain erratic till March 20 across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
