AMU Alumni to celebrate Sir Syed Day in J&K this evening

Srinagar, Oct. 17: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Alumni Association will this evening celebrate Sir Syed (SS) Day with traditional zeal in Valley, with events scheduled in Srinagar and the scenic resorts of Pahalgam and Gulmarg.

Similar gatherings will also be held across Jammu and Kashmir, where AMU alumni will pay homage to the university’s founder, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, whose vision transformed modern education among Muslims in the subcontinent.

The celebrations will feature a mushaira (poetic symposium) and the screening of a documentary on the life and mission of Sir Syed. AMU students will speak about his reformist ideals and the continuing role of the university in educational empowerment.

The alumni will also discuss ways to strengthen the forum’s social and educational outreach in the region.

As per tradition, the event will conclude with the singing of the AMU tarana (anthem), followed by a customary Aligarian dinner.

A geography scholar from Sopore, Zahoor-ul-Hassan, 42, who passed away last year, will also be remembered during the event.

“Zahoor was an asset to AMU, and such people are rarely born,” said Malik Zubair, a doctorate in geology from AMU. “He not only had expertise in his subject but was an intellectual par excellence.”
