House collapses during marriage function in Mahoor, 20 injured

Banihal, June 07: At least 20 persons were injured when a traditional mud house collapsed during a marriage function in Malai Kot village of Mahoor tehsil in Reasi district on Saturday night, officials said.

According to police officials, the incident occurred at around 9:30 PM at the residence of Mohammad Ishaq, son of Jalal Din, where a marriage ceremony was in progress. A large number of relatives, guests and villagers had gathered to participate in the celebrations.

Sources said the roof of the kaccha (mud) house suddenly caved in, reportedly due to the excessive load of people present inside the structure during the function. The collapse triggered panic among the guests, with many rushing to rescue those trapped under the debris.

Around 20 persons sustained injuries of varying degrees in the incident. Local residents immediately launched rescue operations and were later joined by police personnel from Mahoor, who reached the spot soon after receiving information.

The injured were shifted to Community Health Centre (CHC) Mahore for treatment. Hospital authorities said that most of the injured were discharged after receiving first aid, while six to seven persons are still undergoing treatment. Their condition is stated to be stable and out of danger.

Reports said that two cattle were also killed in the collapse.

Police have taken cognisance of the incident, while local authorities are assessing the damage caused by the collapse.
