Jammu, Aug 3: Rapid expansion of cloud mass is likely to trigger high-intensity rains, leading to cloudbursts and flash floods in various parts of Jammu division, particularly vulnerable zones, higher reaches in Chenab valley, Rajouri-Poonch, Reasi and Udhampur in the next couple of days.
As per weatherman, weather activity on a similar pattern will continue till August 7-8.
“Light rainfall was experienced at many stations of Jammu region on August 3. Different parts of the region will witness light to moderate rains during the next two days as well, commencing during the intervening night of August 3 and 4. However, higher reaches in Chenab valley and Udhampur, Reasi may witness high intensity rainfall triggering cloudbursts and flash floods. After Wednesday, August 6, the intensity will reduce,” stated Dr Mahender Singh, Chief Scientist and In-charge Agrometeorology, SKUAST-Jammu.
As per earlier forecast, moderate to heavy showers lashed several parts of the region on Monday (August 3, 2026) as well. Particularly Rajouri witnessed an intense spell of heavy showers leading to flood alerts in several parts of the district. Parts of Jammu and Udhampur too witnessed brief spells of intense rainfall.
“In terms of intensity, 15 to 20 mm of rainfall was recorded in different parts of Jammu region while Rajouri registered 20 to 25 mm of rainfall,” Singh shared.
Earlier the met department forecast had mentioned the rapid cloud mass expansion over Jammu region on August 3 and 4. Even during the next two days, although prolonged rainfall is not expected, there remains a very high risk of flash floods due to intense localised downpours and isolated cloudburst events too cannot be ruled out, with the possibility of landslides and shooting stones in vulnerable hilly areas.
Weather advisories, issued by the divisional, district authorities and Police, cautioning people in vulnerable stretches to stay alert continue to be in place.
The heavy to normal rainfall in the month of July has already ended the deficit spell in Jammu division with many of its districts recording surplus precipitation.
As per the Met department prediction, in the next three to four days, the maximum temperature in Jammu will swing between 33 to 35 degrees Celsius, followed by hot and humid weather conditions.
