Jammu, Aug 5: Senior cardiologist and social activist Dr Neeraj Sharma has lodged a police complaint against the J&K Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president and the former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti for what he alleged, “dishonouring the national flag.”
In a complaint filed at the Police Station Pacca Danga, Jammu, on Wednesday evening, Dr Neeraj sought action including registration of FIR against the former Chief Minister, invoking the rules under “The Prevention of Insults To National Honour Act, 1971” for allegedly holding the national flag upside down and thus dishonouring it during a protest at Srinagar on August 4, 2026.
“The videos and pictures of the said incident have been in circulation in the media since yesterday, august 4, 2026. This is to bring to your notice that the PDP president has deliberately showed the saffron side of the national flag down as against the guidelines which is a crime under section 3 explanation 4 (1) of ‘The Prevention of Insults To National Honour Act, 1971’,” Jammu cardiologist mentioned in his complaint addressed to the Station House Officer (SHO) Pacca Danga, Jammu.
He, in his complaint, maintained that it “not only caused disrespect to the national flag but also deep emotional Insult to all the nationalist individuals in the country.”
“This may kindly be considered urgent and necessary action including registration of FIR must be done under rules,” he submitted in the complaint.
A senior Police officer, while responding to Greater Kashmir queries in this connection, confirmed the receipt of Dr Neeraj Sharma’s complaint at Pacca Danga Police Station.
“Yes, we have received a complaint. We will verify it. After verification, we will look into it. In fact, the said offence has not taken place here. Still, we will look into it and after verification, will approach the concerned Police Station,” the officer, who preferred anonymity, stated.
Complaint was filed after a big controversy erupted over the images of the former Chief Minister holding an inverted national flag during her party’s protest in Srinagar on the eve of August 5, against the abrogation of Article 370 and 35-A.
