Jammu, Aug 9: Fresh spell of isolated high-intensity rains and thunderstorms will commence on Sunday across Jammu region with spiralling surge in impact during the next five days.
The spell beginning with fairly widespread light to moderate rains in Jammu division with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds on August 10 will swirl to isolated heavy to very heavy rain coupled with thunderstorm, lightning and gusty winds on August 11.
“High intensity rains may induce landslides, mudslides, flash floods and shooting stones at vulnerable places in Jammu division. Impact of similar weather activity will continue till August 15, 2026,” the Met department forecast predicted, cautioning to keep vigil during heightened weather activity.
“Light to moderate rainfall will lash most of the parts of Jammu region with the possibility of intense spells at isolated places during the intervening night of August 9 and 10. Next two days will witness widespread intense spells across the division,” stated DrMahender Singh, Chief Scientist and In-charge Agrometeorology, SKUAST-Jammu.
He asserted that weakened weather activity due to widespread rains across North India in the past two days reduced intensity of rainfall as predicted for August 9 and 10 in Jammu division.
Meanwhile, the two youth were feared to have drowned in Chenab river in Akhnoor area of Jammu district on Sunday, triggering intense search operations by the joint teams of Police, NDRF, SDRF and local divers.
Police said that the youth, identified as Gajay Singh, 30, son of Vijay Singh and Rakesh Singh, 35, son of Balwan Singh, both residents of Khour in Akhnoor, had gone to take a bath in the river when the mishap occurred.
The Police recovered their motorcycle, bearing the registration number JK02BP-1567, mobiles and clothes lying on the river banks.
Fast currents of water were posing a major obstacle in the rescue operation, which was not called off, officials said.
