Srinagar, Nov 6: Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr Moulvi Mohammad Umar Farooq on Friday said he continued to remain under house arrest for nearly a week, alleging that police deployment and barricades outside his Nigeen residence had prevented him from visiting the historic Jama Masjid in Srinagar to deliver the Friday sermon.
In a post on X, Mirwaiz expressed disappointment over the continued restrictions, saying he would not be able to address the faithful at the mosque.
“My house detention continues unabated for the past week with police deployment and barricades in place. Unfortunate that I will not be able to deliver the Friday sermon at Jama Masjid Srinagar to the faithful today. Arbitrary and authoritarian measures to curtail freedom of movement and speech only betray the official narrative of ‘normalcy’ in Kashmir,” he said.
He said the restrictions had prevented him from attending scheduled religious gatherings and leading the Friday congregation at Jamia Masjid.
