Srinagar, Nov 06: Manuscripts of Kalhana’s 12th-century historical chronicle Rajatarangini have been inscribed on UNESCO’s Memory of the World Asia-Pacific Regional Register, bringing international recognition to one of Kashmir’s most significant historical works.
The manuscripts of the epic Mahabharata and Kautilya’s Arthashastra, a treatise on governance and statecraft, have also been included in the register.
The announcement was made by the Ministry of Culture’s Press Information Bureau on Thursday, which shared photographs of the UNESCO certificates on X.
The decision was taken at the 11th session of the Memory of the World Asia-Pacific Regional Register held in Jakarta, Indonesia, the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) said.
The IGNCA played an important role in preparing the nomination dossiers for all three works, an official said.
With the latest additions, India’s total number of inscriptions in the regional register has risen to six.
Written by Kalhana in the 12th century, Rajatarangini is a historical chronicle of Kashmir that documents the region’s rulers, political developments and society.
The Mahabharata is one of India’s two major Sanskrit epics, while the Arthashastra, attributed to Kautilya, deals with governance, administration, economics and statecraft.
