Anantnag, Oct 7: Students from nearby schools were taken through the journey of drinking water-from its natural source to household taps—during an awareness programme at the Water Supply Scheme Larnoo in Anantnag district.
The programme, titled “Know Your Water,” was organised under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) by the Jal Shakti PHE Sub-Division Kokernag, Division Bijbehara, to sensitise students about safe drinking water, treatment processes and conservation.
During the visit, officials explained the functioning of the Rapid Sand Filtration Plant at Larnoo and demonstrated the different stages involved in making raw water safe for consumption, including source collection, treatment, filtration, disinfection, quality testing and distribution.
The students were briefed about the source of raw water and the treatment it undergoes before being supplied to households. Officials explained that ensuring safe drinking water does not end with providing a tap connection but also requires proper treatment, regular quality checks and responsible use.
The students were urged to avoid wastage of treated water, protect water sources, prevent pollution and report leakages wherever noticed.
Officials also explained the broader objectives of the Jal Jeevan Mission, particularly providing functional household tap connections in rural areas and reducing the need for families to travel long distances to fetch drinking water.
They said reliable access to safe drinking water can save time, improve hygiene and contribute to better health and overall quality of life.
The programme also stressed the need to preserve water bodies and safeguard drinking water sources for future generations. Students were encouraged to take the message of conservation beyond the classroom and share it with their families and communities.
Officials emphasised that safe drinking water is a continuous responsibility involving both service providers and consumers, and that preventing wastage and pollution is essential for sustainable water management.
The programme concluded with an appeal to the students to become ambassadors of water conservation and promote the judicious use of treated drinking water in their homes and communities.
