New Delhi, Oct 28: The death toll in a collision involving two trains near Urda, south of Madrid, has risen to at least 64, according to officials as reported by BBC.The toll is feared to rise further.
More than 500 passengers were travelling on the two trains, operated by private company Iryo and state-owned Renfe. Emergency services, including firefighters, paramedics and helicopters, were deployed to rescue survivors and assist the injured.
Officials said the exact circumstances of the collision were yet to be established. Reports suggested a possible signalling-related human error, but no cause has been officially confirmed. Spain Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed shock over the accident and extended support to those affected and their families. Rail services between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia remained suspended.
