Srinagar MP, ex-mayor booked for circulating false content on social media

Srinagar, Mar 04: National Conference MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and former Srinagar Mayor Junaid Azim Mattu have been booked for allegedly circulating misleading content on social media platforms.

“Acting on credible inputs regarding the circulation of false, fabricated and misleading content across digital and social media platforms with the intent to create fear, disturb public order and incite unlawful activities, Srinagar Police has registered cases against Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and Junaid Azim Mattu,” police said on X on Tuesday.

It said the content in question, prima facie, reflected dissemination of distorted narratives and unverified information capable of causing public unrest and societal disharmony.

“Such deliberate attempts to spread misinformation pose a serious threat to peace, security and overall stability. Accordingly, FIR No 02/2026 and FIR No 03/2026 have been registered under Sections 197(1)(d) and 353(1)(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Cyber Police Station, Srinagar,” the police said.

They said an investigation has been initiated into both cases.

The police advised the citizens to verify information through official and credible sources before sharing content online and to refrain from circulating unverified material that may disturb communal harmony or public order.

On X, Mehdi and Mattu had claimed that their security had been downgraded.

Mehdi, the Lok Sabha MP from Srinagar, said that he was neither fascinated by “these petty things” nor scared by the absence of security personnel around him.

He said that as a citizen of this country, he will exercise his rights “to stand up against your atrocities, violation of laws, freedom and democracy given to us by the constitution, to the last drop of my blood.”

“Some fools in Jammu and Kashmir Police and administration think that by withdrawing/downgrading my security detail and suspending my Facebook account will stop me from calling out their atrocities. It is laughable!” the NC leader said on X.

Former mayor Mattu also claimed that his security was withdrawn over his statements on Iran and the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the joint US-Israel air strike.

“For my statements on Iran and Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei’s martyrdom, and for speaking against the BJP-led government’s moral abdication and deafening silence on the issue of the illegitimate barbaric onslaught on Iran by the US and Israel — my security has just been effectively withdrawn with immediate effect. A measure aimed to silence me,” Mattu said on X.

Sadhotra calls on CM Omar, pleads for effective implementation of PSGA

Jammu, Mar 3: Former Minister and National Conference Additional General Secretary Ajay Kumar Sadhotra on Monday called on Chief Minister  Omar Abdullah and discussed the overall situation in Jammu and Kashmir with particular focus on development initiatives, employment generation and economic empowerment of the people.

As per KNS, during the meeting, Sadhotra apprised the Chief Minister of various public issues and stressed the need to further accelerate development works across regions and sub-regions.

He underlined the importance of further strengthening grassroots-level implementation of welfare schemes to ensure that benefits reach the intended sections in a transparent and time-bound manner. He lauded the government’s thrust on inclusive development, job creation and economic opportunities for youth and marginalised segments, saying that employment generation initiatives should be expanded in both government and private sectors, with special attention to skill development and entrepreneurship promotion.

Sadhotra also sought effective implementation of the Public Services Guarantee Act to ensure timely delivery of public services and greater accountability in governance. He said the Act must be enforced in letter and spirit so that citizens receive services within the stipulated timeframe without unnecessary delay. The Public Services Guarantee Act, enacted during the previous spell of Omar led government, is a landmark legislation aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability in administration. Its strict implementation will significantly improve the delivery system and restore public confidence, Sadhotra said. “The legislation was brought with the objective of addressing the urges and aspirations of the people by guaranteeing time-bound services. It is imperative that its provisions are fully operationalised,”. Sadhotra said in a statement after meeting the Chief Minister. He said that strengthening accountability mechanisms would not only streamline administrative functioning but also curb inefficiency and red tape. “Good governance is measured by the ease with which a common citizen can access basic services. Ensuring timely delivery is essential for building trust between the government and the people,” he said.

Ensure lasting peace to salvage new academic session: GM Shaheen

Srinagar, Mar 3: Office of Janta Dal United Party President GM Shaheen has made a serious and urgent appeal to the Government to initiate immediate and decisive steps towards ensuring lasting peace and stability as the continuing unrest is directly undermining the education system and putting the future of thousands of children at risk.

In a statement, GM Shaheen stated that when “classrooms fall silent and schools remain uncertain, it is not just an institutional disruption but a national failure.”

“Children are being deprived of structured learning, examinations are being postponed, academic performance is declining and anxiety among students and parents is rising sharply. Such conditions create long term social and intellectual damage that cannot be easily repaired,” Shaheen added.

He asserted that governance is measured not only by administrative control but by the ability to safeguard the aspirations of the younger generation. No political tension, no security challenge and no administrative complication should be allowed to obstruct the path of education.

China removes 3 retired generals from top advisory body

China removes 3 retired generals from top advisory body

New Delhi, Mar 3: China has removed three retired senior military officers from a top political advisory body just days before its biggest annual political meetings, the BBC has reported. State media said the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) voted to expel former generals Han Weiguo, Gao Jin and Liu Lei. No official reason was given for the move.

The removals come amid a renewed wave of purges within China’s military leadership. President Xi Jinping has led a wide-ranging anti-corruption campaign since taking power in 2012. While the campaign has targeted many officials, critics say it has also been used to sideline political rivals.

The decision was announced just before the start of the annual “Two Sessions” meetings in Beijing, where around 3,000 delegates from the CPPCC and the National People’s Congress gather for about a week of policy discussions. Members typically serve five-year terms ending in 2028, making these mid-term removals unusual.

J&K Ranji players receive grand welcome in Jammu

Jammu, Mar 3: Jammu and Kashmir Ranji cricket team received a rousing reception on their arrival in Jammu on Tuesday as jubilant fans thronged the airport and lined city streets to celebrate the landmark achievement.

The players were greeted with flower garlands, drum beats and traditional dances as supporters waved banners and chanted slogans in praise of the team.

The celebratory scenes outside the airport soon turned into a procession, with fans escorting the victorious squad through various parts of the city amid tight security arrangements.

The historic victory marked a watershed moment for J&K cricket, ending a 66-year wait for the prestigious domestic title.

The team’s remarkable campaign culminated in a commanding win over the Karnataka cricket team in the final, earning accolades from across the country.

Among the players who drew loud cheers was pacer Yudhvir Singh Charak, who described the reception as an unforgettable and proud moment for the entire team.

“It feels overwhelming to see so much love and support from the people of Jammu & Kashmir. This victory belongs to every fan that stood by us through the years,” Yudhvir said while interacting with the media amid the celebrations.

Crediting the collective effort behind the triumph, he said the win was the result of teamwork, discipline and belief.

“Every player contributed at crucial moments. It was not about individual brilliance but about playing as a unit. We backed each other in tough situations, and that made the difference,” he added.

Yudhvir also expressed gratitude to the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for their consistent support and infrastructure development, which he said played a vital role in nurturing talent from the Union Territory.

“The facilities, exposure and encouragement provided by JKCA and BCCI have been instrumental. This win shows that with the right backing, players from J&K can compete at the highest level,” he said.

The celebrations continued across Jammu city, with youth performing bhangra and traditional Dogra dances to the rhythm of dhol beats. Firecrackers lit up the sky as residents distributed sweets to mark the occasion.

Officials said a formal felicitation ceremony for the team is being planned in the coming days to honour their achievement. (KNO)

NH-44 open for 2-way traffic; bottlenecks slow movement

NH-44 open for 2-way traffic; bottlenecks slow movement

Ramban, Mar 3: The Srinagar–Jammu National Highway (NH-44) remained open on Tuesday for two-way movement of light, medium and heavy motor vehicles, offering relief to commuters and transporters.

Traffic authorities said that, subject to fair weather and favourable road conditions, the highway is likely to remain open on Wednesday as well. A final decision will be taken after a fresh assessment of road and traffic conditions.

Despite the restoration of two-way movement for heavy motor vehicles, traffic was slow at several stretches between Maroog and Kishtwari Pather due to single-lane sections and ongoing four-laning works in the Ramban–Banihal sector. The breakdown of a few heavy vehicles along the route further contributed to congestion.

Officials said hundreds of private cars and light to medium passenger vehicles plied on both sides of the highway during the day, negotiating intermittent bottlenecks. A steady movement of load carriers was also reported, particularly along the Ramban–Banihal stretch.

Authorities attributed the sluggish traffic primarily to narrow road stretches, ongoing construction activities and vehicle breakdowns en route.

Earlier in the morning, vehicular movement was temporarily halted in the Tharad area after the road maintenance agency, NHAI, carried out blasting of boulders along the highway in Udhampur district. Traffic was restored after debris was cleared from the road.

Passengers and light motor vehicle (LMV) operators have been advised to travel only during daytime hours. Night travel has been discouraged due to the risk of shooting stones, landslides and construction-related hazards in the Ramban–Banihal sector.

Meanwhile, National Highway 244 (Kishtwar–Sinthantop–Anantnag) continues to remain closed due to heavy accumulation of snow over the past several weeks.

Commuters have been advised to check the latest road status with Traffic Control Units in Jammu, Srinagar, Udhampur and Ramban before planning their journeys.
