Committed to take forward ties based on mutual respect, sensitivity: PM Modi to President Xi

Tianjin, Aug 31: India is committed to taking forward its ties with China based on mutual trust, respect and sensitivity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Chinese President Xi Jinping as the two leaders held wide-ranging talks to reset the bilateral relations.

In his televised opening remarks, Modi said the welfare of 2.8 billion people is linked to bilateral cooperation between India and China.

The prime minister noted that there is peace and stability along the border following last year’s disengagement process, adding that direct flights between the two countries are being resumed.

The prime minister also made a mention of the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra.

There was consent between our Special Representatives on border management, he said.

The prime minister also congratulated Xi on China’s successful presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

Historic Dar-ul-Mominat Madrasa reduced to ashes in midnight blaze in north Kashmir’s Karnah

Kupwara, August 31: A devastating fire broke out on the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday in Kandi area of Karnah, a remote border belt of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, completely gutting the historic Dar-ul-Mominat Madrasa.

Local sources said that the blaze reduced the revered institution to ashes, inflicting financial losses worth lakhs of rupees and leaving the community in shock.

For over three decades, Madrasa Dar-ul-Mominat had stood as a center of Islamic learning and spiritual guidance in Karnah, shaping the lives of countless students. Its destruction has created a profound void in the religious and educational fabric of the area.

Soon after the fire erupted, the Indian Army rushed to the spot and extended crucial support in containing the blaze. Along with the Fire and Emergency Services Department and local residents, the Army played a significant role in stopping the flames from spreading further, thereby safeguarding adjoining properties.

Expressing solidarity with the madrasa authorities, President Beopar Mandal Karnah and Private Secretary to MLA Karnah, Haji Tasleem Mir, visited the spot and conveyed his support to Chairman Dar-ul-Mominat, Haji Shabir Ahmed Turk, and other members of the institution. He appealed to MLA Karnah, Javaid Mirchal, the District Administration Kupwara, and local authorities to ensure immediate ex-gratia relief for the madrasa.

Haji Tasleem Mir also urged affluent residents of Karnah to contribute generously towards rebuilding the institution. “The Dar-ul-Mominat has been a source of light and knowledge for decades. We must unite to restore this prestigious institution so that the flame of education and faith continues to shine bright in our valley,” he said. [KNT]

PM Modi holds talks with President Xi

Tianjin, Aug 31: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday held bilateral talks against the backdrop of Washington’s tariff tussle that has impacted almost all leading economies across the world.

Modi landed in China on Saturday on a two-day visit that came after a gap of seven years.

In the talks, the two leaders are expected to take stock of India-China economic ties and deliberate on steps to further normalise relations that came under severe strain following the eastern Ladakh border row.

Modi is in China primarily to attend the two-day annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) beginning Sunday.

However, his meeting with Xi assumed greater significance in the face of strain in ties between India and the US following the Trump administration’s policies on trade and tariff.

Ahead of his trip to Tianjin, Modi said it is important for India and China to work together to bring stability to the world economic order.

In an interview with Japan’s The Yomiuri Shimbun, Modi said a stable, predictable, and amicable bilateral relations between India and China can have a positive impact on regional and global peace and prosperity.

“Given the current volatility in world economy, it is also important for India and China, as two major economies, to work together to bring stability to the world economic order,” Modi said in the interview published on Friday.

Modi’s trip to China comes less than a fortnight after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited India.

Following Wang’s wide-ranging talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, the two sides unveiled a series of measures for a “stable, cooperative and forward-looking” relationship between the two sides.

The measures included joint maintenance of peace along the contested frontier, reopening border trade and resuming direct flight services at the earliest.

In the last few months, both sides have initiated a series of measures to reset their ties that came under severe strain following the deadly clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in Galwan Valley in June 2020.

Trump administration pushes to restore Pentagon’s name as ‘Department of War’

Trump tells BBC he is 'disappointed but not done' with Putin, backs NATO and UK ties

Washington, Aug 31: The White House is moving ahead with plans to rebrand the Pentagon, confirming that the Department of Defence will be renamed the Department of War, according to multiple local media reports.

The Department of War, originally established by Congress in August 1789, was tasked with overseeing the nation’s military operations and maintaining its armed forces.

Following World War II, it was briefly renamed the National Military Establishment before adopting its current title, the Department of Defence.

White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly told Fox News that the change is part of a broader effort to restore what the administration sees as traditional military priorities.

“As President Trump said, our military should be focused on offence — not just defence — which is why he has prioritised warfighters at the Pentagon instead of DEI and woke ideology,” Kelly said in a written statement.

The confirmation comes just days after President Trump signaled the move during remarks at the White House.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump had said the change could take effect “over the next week or so.”

At the event, he stated, “You know, we call it the Department of Defence, but between us, I think we’re going to change the name. You want to know the truth, I think we’re going to have some information on that, maybe soon,” he said.

The President highlighted the symbolic weight of the original name, noting its association with past US military triumphs.

“We won World War I (and) World War II. It was called the Department of War. To me, that’s really what it is,” Trump said.

“I’m talking to the people. Everybody likes that. We had an unbelievable history of victory when it was the Department of War. Then we changed it to Department of Defence,” he added.

The 1947 National Security Act had restructured the original War Department into the National Military Establishment, bringing the Army, Navy, and the newly created Air Force under one roof.

A subsequent 1949 amendment formally introduced the Department of Defence, creating the modern structure that exists today.

President Trump, alongside Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, has been working to reshape the Pentagon’s image into one that emphasises greater aggression.

Their approach has included the removal of top military officials seen as being at odds with the administration’s vision.

KPDCL announces power shutdown in Kashmir parts

Rajouri, Aug 31: Several areas of Rajouri, Poonch, Reasi and adjoining parts are reeling under a severe power crisis, with electricity remaining snapped for the last 50 hours as the Transmission Division (TD-4th) carries out repairs of a damaged tower near Jagti, sources said.

According to earlier assurances by the power department, electricity was to be fully restored by 6 PM on Saturday. Later, it was informed that one circuit out of two (50% restoration) would be functional by 11 PM the same day. However, the assurances fell flat, with no restoration taking place even after 50 hours.

Many vital health institutions in the affected areas remained in complete darkness last night due to the unavailability of adequate power backup systems.

Meanwhile, there has been no response from the Transmission Division, further deepening the crisis. Even field functionaries of the power department are reported to be uncertain and unable to respond to public queries and concerns.

HC orders action against 23 encroachers on historic Shah Kul

HC restores permission to Ludhiana trust to run Langar at Panchtarni

Srinagar, Aug 30: The High Court of J&K and Ladakh has issued notice to 23 persons who have allegedly encroached upon ‘Shah Kul’, a historical canal of importance and a national monument that had been the main source of water to Nishat Gardens since the time of Mughal Emperor Jahangir.

Hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), seeking to remove “illegal encroachments of the canal, a division bench of Chief Justice Arun Palli and Justice Rajnesh Oswal also directed the authorities to furnish, within two days, complete details of other encroachers figuring in the supplementary compliance report furnished by them.

Allowing an application seeking to implead 23 persons as party respondents for having allegedly encroached upon the canal, the court issued notices to them for their response.

The court said that the notices be served through the Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar.

While government advocate Jehangir Ahmad Dar undertook to facilitate the process to ensure that all of them were served before the adjourned date – September 3 – the court said, “In the meanwhile, the respondent authorities shall also furnish the complete details of even other encroachers appended to the supplementary compliance report furnished by the respondents within two days.”

The PIL filed in 2023 seeks the court’s intervention for the removal of all illegal encroachments and restoration of the original status of the historical canal.

It also seeks directions for the restoration of adjoining roads encroached upon by the two private persons.

While the PIL seeks directions for constituting a high-level committee comprising an officer of ACB and other investigation wings to investigate the “gross mismanagement of the official respondents (authorities)”, it calls for an investigation by CBI to inquire into the conduct of the officials in the matter.

Besides other things, the petitioner has referred to a communication by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir to Directorate Land Records way back in 2004 that Shah Kul, “having national monumental value and a main source of supplying water to Nishat Gardens since the time of King Jahangir, has been encroached upon, resulting into loss of lakhs of rupees because the water required for Nishat Garden is being now lifted through mechanical pumps”.

The Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, had sought the removal of all types of encroachments on the canal and had also ensured appropriate action against the culprits.

“However, no action has been taken,” the petitioner contended.

While the PIL underscores that the authorities are legally bound at first instance to carry out and act on their reports and orders in their letter and spirit, so as to restore the original status of the ‘Shah Kul’, it urges removing all encroachments made in and around the ‘Kul’.

It also seeks to remove the blockage of two public roads for having general public interest and historical importance.
