Trump warns Iran over Hormuz as war enters eleventh day, oil prices ease

New Delhi, Mar 10: The war involving the United States, Israel and Iran entered its eleventh day on Tuesday with no immediate end in sight, even as global oil prices fell in early Asian trading after surging to as high as $115 a barrel on Monday.

The drop followed comments by US President Donald Trump suggesting the conflict could end “pretty quickly,” though he added that Washington had not yet “won enough.” Trump also issued a fresh warning to Tehran against disrupting shipping in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world’s oil supply passes.

“If Iran does anything that stops the flow of oil within the Strait of Hormuz, they will be hit by the United States of America twenty times harder than they have been hit thus far,” Trump said in an online statement.

The US president warned that Washington could strike “easily destroyable targets” in Iran that would make it “virtually impossible” for the country to rebuild. “Death, fire and fury will reign upon them — but I hope and pray that it does not happen,” he added.

The conflict, which began on Feb 28, has expanded across the West Asia or Middle East and disrupted maritime traffic in the Gulf, pushing oil prices sharply higher in recent days.

Speaking to Republican lawmakers in Florida, Trump said the United States had achieved several military successes but intended to intensify its operations. “We’ve already won in many ways, but we haven’t won enough,” he said, describing the conflict as “an excursion” from his domestic policy agenda but necessary because he believed Iran was preparing attacks against the United States and Israel, reports the BBC.

Trump acknowledged the economic and social impact of the war in US, including falling stock markets, but predicted the markets would recover. He also said casualties among US personnel were unavoidable. The US military confirmed that a seventh service member had been killed since the conflict began. Across the West Asia, casualties have also been reported in Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon as Israeli forces continued air strikes inside Iran.

Meanwhile, European leaders warned of wider economic fallout, reports the BBC. The UK’s chancellor said inflation could rise as London signalled support for releasing strategic oil reserves by members of the Group of Seven to help stabilise energy markets.

French President Emmanuel Macron visited Cyprus, which has seen several strikes since the war began, while Britain and other European countries announced plans to deploy additional military assets to Europe’s southern flank. British Defence Secretary John Healey said a drone that struck a British military base in Cyprus last week was believed to have been launched from the region, underscoring fears that the conflict could continue to widen.

In a humanitarian development, several players from Iran women’s national football team currently in Australia for the Asian Cup have been granted humanitarian visas to remain in the country following their elimination from the tournament, reports the BBC.

IT Deptt finds Rs 408 Cr sales suppression in restaurants across country

New Delhi, Mar 9: The Income Tax Department has uncovered large-scale suppression of sales in restaurants across the country after conducting a nationwide verification exercise in the Food and Beverage (F&B) sector.

According to officials, the department carried out an investigation in November 2025 to analyse patterns of tax evasion among restaurants. During the exercise, it was found that several establishments were allegedly deleting bulk bills and making other modifications in their records to suppress their actual sales.

Using AI-enabled analytical tools, the department examined transactional data of nearly 1.77 lakh restaurants in the F&B sector. The data was compared with the turnover declared by these restaurants in their Income Tax Returns. The analysis reportedly revealed widespread under-reporting of income.

Officials said that in several cases, the sales recorded in transaction data did not fully match the figures shown in financial accounts or tax filings, indicating that certain transactions had been excluded from the reported sales.

Following the findings, the Income Tax Department conducted a nationwide survey on March 8, 2026, covering 62 restaurants across 46 cities in 22 states. Preliminary results from the exercise revealed suppression of sales amounting to around ₹408 crore. Investigations in the matter are currently underway.

The department said it continues to emphasise voluntary compliance and a trust-based approach. As part of this effort, it has launched the SAKSHAM NUDGE campaign to guide and advise taxpayers to correct discrepancies in their filings.

Officials said emails and messages will be sent to around 63,000 identified restaurants in the first phase, asking them to update their returns under Section 139(8A) of the Income Tax Act before March 31, 2026.

Cancer burden grows in J&K, cases cross 12,000 in 2025

Cancer burden grows in J&K, cases cross 12,000 in 2025

Srinagar, Mar 9: Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a steady increase in cancer cases in recent years, with 12,024 cases reported in 2025, according to data released by the Government of India.

The official figures indicate a gradual rise in the incidence of cancer across J&K, raising concerns among health experts about the growing burden of the disease in the region.

The data shows that a total of 59,286 cancer cases were recorded in J&K between 2021 and 2025.

According to the figures, 11,683 cases were reported in 2021, which increased to 11,764 in 2022.

The number further rose to 11,869 in 2023 and 11,946 in 2024, before reaching 12,024 cases in 2025.

Medical experts say the increasing numbers reflect a broader trend seen in many developing regions where lifestyle changes, environmental factors, and improved diagnostic facilities are contributing to higher detection rates.

A senior medico at SKIMS said cancer continues to remain one of the most challenging diseases affecting humanity.

“Cancer is a challenging opponent, very unpredictable and at times very harsh. It does not differentiate between age, sex, nations, colours, castes, religions or geographies, it involves all. But there is always a silver lining, while we may not have complete control over it, we are far from powerless,” the senior doctor said.

He said that over the last two to three decades medicine had made extraordinary progress in cancer care, including improved diagnostic facilities and advances in treatment through medical oncology, radiation oncology and surgery.

“Cure rates for many types of cancers have improved but the rise in incidence and cancer-related deaths pose a significant challenge to most of the developing world. Kashmir is not an exception. There has been a significant rise in cancer cases across J&K over the last 15 years. Our priority should be prevention, early detection and treatment,” the medico sais.

Health experts said prevention remains one of the most effective strategies to control cancer.

They said that nearly 50 percent of cancers could be prevented by reducing modifiable risk factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, unhealthy diet, and sedentary lifestyle. Doctors advise people to avoid tobacco in any form, limit alcohol intake, adopt a healthy and balanced diet, exercise regularly and reduce the consumption of red meat. Vaccination against infections linked to cancer such as HPV and hepatitis B is also recommended.

“Preventing cancer is not about eliminating risk altogether. It’s about stacking the odds in our favour, one conscious decision at a time,” the doctor said.

Experts also stressed the importance of early diagnosis, saying early recognition of warning symptoms can significantly improve treatment outcomes.

Some symptoms that require medical attention include persistent cough or blood in sputum, a lump in the breast, loss of appetite and difficulty in swallowing, unusual constipation or blood in stools, blood in urine, swelling of lymph nodes, prolonged weakness or anaemia, abnormal bleeding in post-menopausal women, unusual persistent pain, prolonged fever and unexplained weight loss.

Jammu, Mar 9: Kathua Heros produced a dominant all-round performance to defeat Rajouri Indians by nine wickets in the ongoing YSS-JKSC Cricket League match played at MA Stadium, Jammu, on Monday, while Udhampur Fighters produced a dominant all-round performance to register a comprehensive 10-wicket victory over Ramban Eagles, and Rajouri Leopards produced a dominant all-round performance to defeat Poonch Badshahs by nine wickets.

As per a statement issued, in the first match of the day, after winning the toss, Rajouri Indians chose to bat first but struggled to build momentum and eventually posted a modest 106/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

Lone Zaheen also departed without scoring, leaving the side reeling early.

Captain Suhail Dar tried to stabilise the innings with a brisk knock of 36 runs off 29 balls, striking seven boundaries.

Later, Kashif Dar added valuable runs towards the end with an unbeaten 28 off 26 deliveries to help Rajouri Indians cross the 100-run mark.

For Kathua Heros, Ram Dayal and Rohit Sharma were the pick of the bowlers, claiming two wickets each while maintaining tight lines.

Ram Dayal finished with figures of 2/18 in four overs, while Rohit Sharma also returned 2/18 from his three overs.

Chasing a modest target of 107, Kathua Heros made light work of the run chase and reached the target in just 11.1 overs, losing only one wicket.

Opening batter Puri Abhinav anchored the innings with a composed unbeaten 45 off 32 balls, hitting six boundaries.

He was well supported by Ram Dayal, who played a quickfire knock of 42 not out from just 22 balls, smashing six fours and a six to seal the victory in emphatic fashion.

The only breakthrough for Rajouri Indians came when Anwar Ul Haq dismissed Saksham for 11 runs, but it proved little consolation as Kathua Heros comfortably chased down the target.

With this comprehensive win, Kathua Heros strengthened their position in the league with an impressive performance in both departments of the game.

In the second match of the day, after winning the toss, Ramban Eagles opted to bat first but struggled to build momentum against a disciplined bowling attack and were eventually bundled out for 103 runs in 18.1 overs.

For Ramban Eagles, Shalien Rana top-scored with a brisk 42 off 34 balls, hitting six fours and a six to anchor the innings in the early stages. Mohd Amaan Dar contributed 21 runs, while Ahsham Ahmad chipped in with a quick 9 off 8 balls. However, the middle and lower order failed to convert starts into substantial scores as wickets fell at regular intervals.

Udhampur Fighters’ bowlers shared the spoils with Gourav Khajuria leading the attack, claiming 3 wickets for 19 runs in three overs. Munish and Sunil Kumar provided able support, picking up two wickets each to restrict Ramban Eagles to a modest total.

Chasing a target of 104, Udhampur Fighters made light work of the run chase, reaching 104 without loss in just 11.2 overs.

Opener Gourav Khajuria capped off a brilliant all-round performance with the bat, remaining unbeaten on 54 off 41 balls, laced with eight boundaries. He was well supported by Neekhil Singh, who scored an unbeaten 37 off 28 deliveries, striking five fours. The pair stitched together an unbroken opening stand to guide their side comfortably past the target.

The bowlers of Ramban Eagles struggled to make inroads as the Udhampur openers maintained a steady scoring rate, sealing the victory with plenty of overs to spare.

With this emphatic win, Udhampur Fighters strengthened their position in the league, while Ramban Eagles will look to regroup and bounce back in their upcoming fixtures.
