“This is a new beginning for Indian football in our quest to achieve more glory in the international arena,” mentioned Mansukh Mandaviya.

The Union Minister urged the young athletes to keep in mind ‘nation first’ wherever they participate. “More emphasis has to be given towards sports science, nutrition, and mental resilience of these youngsters through psychologists. Illegal mining led to flood havoc: R S Pathania

Illegal mining led to flood havoc: R S Pathania

Udhampur, Aug 28: MLA Udhampur East Ranbir Singh Pathania on Thursday emphasised that the widespread devastation in J&K was not merely a natural disaster but was aggravated by unregulated and illegal mining.

He also made a fervent call to the central government to announce a special central package on the lines of the 2014 Srinagar floods to help Jammu and Kashmir recover fully.

Pathania was interacting with the people while conducting an extensive tour of flood-affected areas in his constituency, covering Rathian (near DPS), Channi More, Satteni, Sountha, Kashirah, Krowa, Kawa, Jaganoo, and Ritti.

He reviewed damages, interacted with affected families and instructed for urgent relief operations. He raised serious concerns that illegal mining was being carried out alarmingly close to water filtration plants, pumping stations, bridges, roads, and forest belts, destabilising riverbeds, triggering soil erosion, and undermining protective embankments.

“These unscientific activities have amplified the impact of floods, turning a natural calamity into a far more severe crisis. The havoc in Udhampur is several times worse than in other regions of J&K due to ecological disruption caused by mining,” he observed.

During his interactions with locals, Pathania noted that most losses suffered by households, farmers, and small traders did not qualify for compensation under SDRF norms and described the kitty announced by the J&K government as “a mere drop in the ocean”.

He urged the Modi government at the Centre to announce a special package on the lines of the 2014 Srinagar floods, ensuring comprehensive relief, restoration of critical infrastructure, revival of economic activity, and implementation of long-term flood-prevention measures to bring normalcy back and make Jammu and Kashmir more resilient.

He directed officials to provide shelters, rations, drinking water, medicines, and temporary connectivity while ensuring daily monitoring of relief distribution.

Pathania stressed the urgent need to strengthen roads, bridges, schools, health centres, irrigation channels, and public utilities and emphasised that flood management and disaster preparedness should be an integral part of the annual budget, with funds allocated for embankments, desilting, protective walls, and resilient infrastructure.

“This calamity offers hard lessons that must be learnt and applied immediately to prevent future disasters,” the BJP MLA said, urging authorities to adopt a proactive, long-term approach rather than only reactive relief measures.

Pathania assured the people that the central government was standing shoulder to shoulder with every affected family and emphasised that recovery must be coupled with protection, prevention, and long-term resilience measures.

Govt’s affidavit in HC to indicate steps on garbage dumping curb

Srinagar, Aug 28: The Jammu and Kashmir government, through a “specific affidavit,” would inform the High Court of J&K and Ladakh about the measures taken to prevent the dumping of garbage into the area surrounding the Wular, one of the largest freshwater lakes of Asia.

As a related Public Interest Litigation (PIL) came up for hearing, the government, through its senior Additional Advocate General, Mohsin Qadiri, informed a division bench of Chief Justice Arun Palli and Justice Rajnesh Oswal that a specific affidavit indicating the required measures would be submitted.

This was in response to the submissions by Advocate Nadeem Qadri, as amicus curiae, who said, there are nearly 33 villages around the water body, and the authorities have apparently failed to take steps to ensure no garbage from the adjacent villages is dumped into the lake area.

The amicus curiae said that Rs 200 crore were provided in this regard, but the authorities have apparently failed to engage full time officials and officers for the conservation and preservation of the lake.

The senior AAG, on behalf of the government, said that “a specific affidavit in this regard shall also be filed before October 6”.

At the same time, the government informed the court that an additional Integrated Management Plan (IMP) as regards Wular Lake has been approved by the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change.

The court was also informed that, as for Surinsar and Mansar lakes, the Integrated Management Plan is yet to be received from the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Faced with this, the Senior AAG submitted that the needful should be done within a week.

In response to that, the Haigam and Shallbugh Wetland Conservation Reserve, IMP is under technical appraisal by Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, Deputy Solicitor General of India, T M Shamsi, submitted that he would take up the matter with the concerned authorities and ensure that the response by IIT Roorke was received within a week to enable the authorities to process the matter.

With regard to Tso-Kar and Tso-Morari lakes, the court was informed that IMP was yet to be received from the Union Territory of Ladakh.

In response to this, DSGI Shamsi submitted that necessary approval and clearance would be accorded within a week to avert any further delay.

“In the wake of the above, for the present, we do not consider it necessary to pass any formal order,” the court said as it observed that it was “assured by counsel appearing for the respective parties that by the adjourned date, a specific affidavit indicating the progress made on the ground shall be submitted.”

Their joint appearance in the Chinese capital is being seen as a significant diplomatic gain for Xi, underlining his influence at a time of heightened global tensions.

Kim’s attendance, the first by a North Korean leader at a Chinese parade since 1959, highlights Beijing’s continued importance to Pyongyang, which relies heavily on China for trade and food imports. His visit also comes amid closer ties between Moscow and Pyongyang since the beginning of the Russia – Ukraine war.

The gathering provides Xi with diplomatic leverage ahead of expected talks with US President Donald Trump later this year, reports BBC. Washington and Beijing remain locked in negotiations over tariffs and trade, while Trump has signalled renewed interest in direct engagement with Kim.

Bangladesh’s top electoral body unveils roadmap for general election to be held in Feb next year

Bangladesh's top electoral body unveils roadmap for general election to be held in Feb next year

Dhaka, Aug 28: Bangladesh’s top electoral body on Thursday unveiled a roadmap for the general election to be held in February next year, saying the poll schedule would be announced at least 60 days before the voting date.

“The Chief Adviser’s Office has asked us to hold the election before Ramadan. If I am not mistaken, Ramadan will begin on February 17 or 18. From this, you can calculate the probable election date,” Election Commission’s Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said at a press briefing here.

He said under the roadmap, discussions with political parties and other stakeholders would be held by the end of September and “it may take one to one and a half months” to complete the process.

Ahmed said the Election Commission set the election target for the first half of February and the roadmap was prepared in line with the directives issued by the interim government’s chief adviser Muhammad Yunus. It received the commission’s approval on Wednesday, he added.

The EC announced the roadmap prioritising 24 key tasks relating to the amendment of the relevant laws like the Representation of the People Order (RPO), Delimitation of Constituencies Act, the Voter List Act, the Election Officers (Special Provisions) Act 1991 and the Election Commission Secretariat Act 2009.

Ahmed said that the other issues to be settled included finalisation of the voter list in phases, policy for domestic and foreign observers and journalists, and registration of new political parties.

The roadmap expected that the EC could announce the election schedule in the second or third week of December.

In a televised address to the nation on August 5, Yunus announced that the 13th parliamentary election would be held before Ramadan, in February next year.

The roadmap was announced while the student-led National Citizen Party (NCP), which merged this year, apparently with Yunus’s blessings, expressed their reservations against planned polls under the existing system and scenario.

Shortly after the EC’s announcement, the NCP said the roadmap suggested the interim government’s “breach of promise”.

The NCP, which is yet to secure the EC registration, was floated in February as a large offshoot of Students against Discrimination (SAD) that led a massive street movement, leading to the ouster of prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League regime on August 5 last year. Three days later, Yunus flew from Paris to assume the charge of the interim government.

“Announcing the roadmap before declaring the implementation of the ‘July Charter’ is tantamount to breaking promises,” former SAD leader and NCP’s Joint Convener Ariful Islam Adeeb told a press conference.

Flanked by other party leaders, Adeeb warned that this move could create future crises for which “the government must bear responsibility”.

The NCP has been waging a campaign to implement the “July Charter” through a new constitution framed by a Constituent Assembly, replacing Bangladesh’s 1972 Constitution.

Jamaat-e-Islami, on the other hand, is demanding the election to be held under “proportional representation” or PR system, eying to ensure its greater stake in the future parliament.

Both Jamaat and NCP are also pressing for the completion of the trial of Hasina and her regime leaders for their alleged role in the attempt to crush last year’s uprising.

Hasina is being tried in absentia at the International Crimes Tribunal on several charges.

Former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has emerged as the single largest party in Awami League’s absence after Yunus’ government disbanded its activities under an executive order.

Despite assurances by Yunus and several of his advisers about free and fair polls within the announced deadline, a sense of uncertainty grew among political parties because of the comments and gestures of the NCP.
