Special train arranged for stranded passengers from Jammu to Delhi

Jammu, Aug 28: Railway authorities have arranged a special train to facilitate the movement of stranded passengers from Jammu to Delhi, following disruption caused by flash floods and cloudbursts in parts of the Jammu division, officials said here on Thursday.

The officials said that the train will depart from Jammu Railway Station at 11:30 AM today. The decision, they said, was taken after heavy rainfall and cloudbursts led to flash floods, damaging road infrastructure and affecting connectivity.

“Movement of vehicles on several routes, including key highways, has been impacted due to waterlogging, landslides, and damage to roads,” the officials said, adding that efforts are ongoing to restore traffic, and weather conditions are showing signs of improvement.

Priority boarding on the special train will be given to stranded tourists and families, the officials added. (KNO)

US church mass shooter had chilling hate message for India

US church mass shooter had chilling hate message for India

New York, Aug 28: The transgender mass shooter who attacked a Catholic church in Minneapolis also had a chilling hate message for India.

In one of the weapons, the shooter had written, “Nuke India”, and above that in misspelt Russian, “Kill yourself”, and showed them off on a video uploaded to social media before the attack on Wednesday.

Two children, eight and ten, were killed, and 17 people were injured in the attack on the church as the pupils of the church’s school were at a mass to mark the opening of the academic year.

Three of those killed were people in their 80s who had come for the mass, police said.

The shooter, identified by police as Robin Westman, shot herself after firing into the church through a stained-glass window.

The killer had completed eighth grade at the school as a boy named Robert Westman in 2017, according to a school publication, before declaring himself to be a transgender girl and legally changing his name in 2020.

In the video she had uploaded, she showed several hate messages, including “Kill Donald Trump now,” that she had written on several weapons she used.

Sounding like a White Supremacist, the killer also had hate messages against Latinos, African Americans, Jews and Israel.

The videos she uploaded were taken down at the request of the police, but copies were available on social media, and IANS discovered the anti-India writing while scanning the video.

The video’s authenticity was confirmed by Homeland Secretary Kristi Noem, who referred in an X post to some of the writings found on the weapons seen in the video.

“This deeply sick murderer scrawled the words ‘For the Children’ and ‘Where is your God?’ and ‘Kill Donald Trump’ on a rifle magazine,” Noem posted.

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel said on X that his agency was investigating the shooting as domestic terrorism and a hate crime targeting Catholics.

This is the second incident of a transgender person attacking a Christian institution in two years.

A transgender man, who was born female, carried out a mass shooting at a Christian school in 2023, killing three 9-year-old children and three adults.

Aiden Hale, who as a girl had attended the Covenant School run by the Presbyterian Christian sect in Nashville, Tennessee, was shot dead by police who responded to the attack.

The latest attack on a place of worship and on children had reverberations around the US and across the world.

In a telegram sent to the local archbishop by the Vatican, Pope Leo condoled the deaths and sent his “blessing as a pledge of peace, fortitude and consolation in the Lord Jesus.”

Trump said on Truth Social, “Please join me in praying for everyone involved”, and ordered flags to fly at half-mast till Sunday on all government buildings and US diplomatic missions as a mark of respect to “the victims of the senseless acts of violence”.

Trump’s latest domestic campaign is fighting violence in US cities.

He has ordered federal and military personnel to patrol Washington and has threatened to send them to other high-crime cities like Chicago in a measure that would challenge the Constitution, as it doesn’t have a provision for the President’s rule or takeover of local functions in states.

Minneapolis has been inundated with bloody violence, and, according to police, the church shooting was the fourth since Tuesday, one of them near a high school close to the church.

At least five people were killed and 25 were hurt in the incidents.

A gunman killed former Democratic State House of Representatives Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, in a Minneapolis suburb in June and seriously injured a state senator and his wife.

The US government’s Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), the State Department and the US media self-righteously criticise other countries for attacks on Catholic institutions while the US itself has a record of similar religious violence.

A tally kept by the US Catholic Bishops’ Conference showed at least 390 attacks on the minority Christian sect since 2020.

India’s first steps to shield textile exporters from US tariff war: cotton duty exemption extended

India’s first steps to shield textile exporters from US tariff war: cotton duty exemption extended

New Delhi, Aug 28: In its first move to cushion the blow from America’s sweeping tariff hikes on Indian exports, the Centre has extended the exemption of import duty on cotton till December 31, 2025, officials from the finance ministry said on Thursday.

The exemption, which was earlier in force from August 19 to September 30, 2025, will now run through the year-end, ensuring steady cotton availability for India’s textile sector, among the industries most directly hit by Washington’s sudden tariff escalation. “Central Government extends import duty exemption on cotton till 31st December 2025,” a finance ministry notification confirmed.

The extension is part of a broader set of tax and policy reforms the government is rushing through to offset the fallout of what officials describe as an “economic shock.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi has signalled that more sweeping relief is imminent, with steps ranging from exporter loans at lower interest rates to a two-tier GST structure aimed at boosting demand and easing compliance.

Media reports suggest that reforms to simplify the Goods and Services Tax could inject nearly $20 billion into the economy, spurring private consumption, which makes up around 60% of GDP. The government has already rolled out a $12 billion income tax cut earlier this year and is preparing fresh measures to sustain momentum. The Reserve Bank of India, meanwhile, is expected to step in with additional rate cuts to encourage lending. Salary hikes for government employees, scheduled for early 2026, are also likely to support domestic demand.

Economists and investment banks say that consumer-facing sectors, particularly those in the automotive, garment, and housing materials industries, stand to benefit the most from the fiscal push. India’s stock markets have so far reacted positively, but experts caution that the broader economic outlook remains fragile.

In parallel, India has stepped up lobbying efforts in Washington. Former foreign secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Harsh Vardhan Shringla, who once served as India’s ambassador to the US, is currently in America, engaging with key stakeholders. India has also hired local lobbyists to make its case in Congress and with the Trump administration.

Vaishno Devi track landslide death toll 34

Jammu, Aug 27: The death toll, a day after the tragic incident of a heavy rain-induced landslide at Adhkwari on the Vaishno Devi track, reached 34, including at least seven minors, as the rescue operation was almost wrapped up on Wednesday.

Among 34 deceased, presumably all the pilgrims, ten bodies remained unidentified while the identity of 24 others was well ascertained. All 34 bodies were brought to the Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital, Jammu.

Around 20 others, mainly pilgrims, also sustained injuries in the incident, which the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said was triggered by a cloudburst at Adhkwari, when the yatra was already suspended.

LG Sinha said several people were washed away in flash floods triggered by a cloud burst, and many precious lives were lost.

Of the injured, some were still undergoing treatment at different hospitals, including 13 at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Narayana Superspeciality hospital, Katra, while a few others were discharged. Initially, on Wednesday, 25 bodies were shifted to the Government Medical College Hospital, Jammu. They were identified as Pinky, 20-25 years, resident of Delhi; Raj, 8-10 years, resident of Punjab; Neera, 30-35 years, resident of UP; Chandini, 25-30 years; Arvind Kumar Soni, 45, resident of Sujangarh-Churu, Rajasthan; Bhawna, 10-12 years; Krishana, 25-30 years, resident of Punjab; Gajanand, 25-30 years, resident of Rajasthan; Sunita, 30-35 years, resident of UP; Manpreet, 15-20 years, resident of Punjab; Tania, 20-25 years, resident of Delhi; Ajay, 40-45 years, resident of Delhi; Aariket, 10-15 years, resident of Mahoroghtra; Sandeep Soni, 41 years, resident of Indra Colony Nagour, Rajasthan; Ramsheran, 40, resident of Punjab; Anjali, 25 years; Mamta, 45 years and Kartik, 22 years, resident of Muzaffarpur Nagar, UP.

Seven bodies, however, could not be identified, and they also included two female children.

Later, nine more bodies were brought to GMCH Jammu and they were identified as Rattan Bai, wife of Bhagat Ram, resident of Bhilka Kheri, MP; Faqir Chand, son of Gautam Ji Gujjar, resident of Bilkh, Kheri, MP; Anil of Rajasthan; Ram Pal, resident of Bakarwala Yamuna Nagar, Haryana (status of residence was being cross-checked) and Anant, 6, resident of UP and Raja, son of Pardeep, resident of North Delhi. The identity of three bodies, including that of a child, was yet to be ascertained.

Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) and the administration were making arrangements to send the bodies of the victims to their native places.

Officials engaged in the relief and rescue operation stated that the major exercise to clear landslide debris and trace any signs of life or body was almost over.

“Though there remained a remote possibility of any other (dead) body still trapped under the debris, yet some people were still approaching that they were not able to contact their members of the family or relatives, so the rescue operation was not formally declared wound up,” they stated.

Notably, inclement weather conditions and network outages were major hindrances to smooth communication. Though the situation improved on Wednesday after the weather opened up yet it was still not fully normal.

Earlier on Tuesday, immediately after the incident, Central Reserve Police Force personnel of 6 Bn swiftly launched rescue operations as the first responders and evacuated the injured to the Community Health Centre (CHC), Katra.

They also helped the stranded pilgrims to move out to safety besides providing all required medical and logistical support. An IAF C-130 transport aircraft carrying NDRF load too reached Jammu to provide aid to people affected in the landslide at Adhkwari.

The Army had also mobilized its three relief columns in and around Katra to assist in relief and rescue operations.

Meanwhile, across the Jammu division, damages to critical infrastructure, public and private properties, caused by heavy rains triggering flash floods and landslides on August 26, were being assessed.

Relief and rescue operations continued across the division, and restoration work related to damaged roads and bridges was going on in full swing.

Residents of localities, which were totally marooned in flood water, had brief moments of reprieve as the water level receded and the civic authorities expedited de-watering and sanitation exercises.

However, gigantic losses incurred in the rains and flash floods left them a distraught lot.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, while admitting that the losses were monumental, while responding to media queries about the extent of losses, stated that damage assessment would start once the rescue operations were completed and that would follow relief distribution. “Once damages are assessed, a relief package will be announced. Centre has promised wholehearted support in the relief and restoration process,” he said.

Adding to the people’s woes were badly impacted water and power supplies, which could not be restored in the majority of flood or rain ravaged areas in all eight affected districts, including the winter capital city in Jammu district.

Earlier, Union Minister Jitendra Singh, regarding the updated status in Jammu, said, “I am receiving calls and messages from different parts of the country expressing concern at not being able to reach their families living in the Jammu division, nor being able to reach the helpline numbers posted on this handle this morning. This is so because of the severely disrupted telecom network in the region.”

“Divisional Commissioner Jammu Ramesh Kumar has been asked to get the public helplines restored on priority, so that with immediate effect, there could be at least one viable communication channel available which could convey the messages further on,” the Union Minister said.

With regard to the impacted water and power supply, he said that even in Jammu and Udhampur towns, he believed almost 30-35 percent restoration was done.

“Despite working through the night, the authorities in Jammu are managing the aftermath of severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall,” he said.

Reports of losses on account of heavy rains continued to pour in on Wednesday.

Officials said that a massive landslide hit the Peer Kho area in Jammu, blocking the road for traffic. Several vehicles, including cars, were damaged. Restoration work was on, they said. The swollen Tawi had also eroded parts of the temple located on its banks. Jammu had received 380 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, breaking the previous record of 270.4 mm on September 25, 1988.

Meanwhile, almost all the swollen water bodies were receding on Wednesday. In Jammu district, the Chenab River was flowing above the danger level with its current level 36.5 feet, yet its water was receding.

The Tawi River, Balole nullah were flowing well below alarm level, and the water was further receding.

In Kathua district, the Tarnah River, Ujh River, and Ravi Rivers were flowing above the alarm level, and the water was declining.

In the Samba district, the Basanter rivers and Bein nallah were flowing well below alarm level, and their status was stable.

Meanwhile, the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, Jammu wing, on Wednesday declared August 27 as a non working day in view of the prevailing extraordinary climatic conditions and the high alert issued by the Divisional Commissioner Jammu.

J&K Police assisting stranded; helplines activated

J&K Police assisting stranded; helplines activated

Srinagar, Aug 27: With parts of Jammu and Kashmir reeling under the impact of relentless rains and landslides, the J&K Police has been placed on alert to deal with the situation.

Authorities have intensified rescue and relief operations, particularly in vulnerable and low-lying areas, amid growing concerns of flooding in both Kashmir and Jammu divisions.

In multiple districts, including Srinagar, Anantnag, Pulwama, Baramulla, Doda, Reasi, Kishtwar, and Ramban, Police personnel have been deployed round the clock to provide aid to stranded civilians, manage traffic on blocked highways, and coordinate evacuations from flood-prone zones.

“We are working in close coordination with civil administration and disaster response forces to ensure the safety of our people,” a senior J&K Police officer said. “All district Police units have been directed to remain on maximum alert. We are providing logistical support, evacuating residents, and ensuring supplies reach the affected.”

Special Quick Response Teams (QRTs) and Mountain Rescue Teams (MRTs) have been mobilised in hilly regions where landslides have blocked roads and cut off access to remote villages.

Police also assisted in shifting families from vulnerable riverbank areas to safer locations.

“Police teams were the first responders when flash floods hit several areas in south Kashmir. We rescued scores of individuals from flooded hamlet areas last night. Relief materials, including food and medicines, were rushed early this morning.”

In the Jammu region, particularly in Reasi and Udhampur, Police are helping clear debris, manage diverted traffic, and offer emergency shelter support.

Efforts are also being made to track missing pilgrims following the devastating landslide near Adh Kunwari on the Vaishno Devi trek route, which claimed over 32 lives on Tuesday.

“We are using drone surveillance in landslide-affected zones and flood-prone riverbanks to monitor water levels and locate any stranded persons,” the officer said.

The collapse of mobile networks and internet connectivity has posed serious challenges to emergency operations.

However, Police have set up temporary wireless stations and are coordinating through alternative channels like satellite phones and police radio.

“Despite communication breakdowns, our ground teams are continuously patrolling. Helplines are active in most district headquarters. If you are in need of help, contact your nearest police station or checkpoint. We are committed to safeguarding every life,” a Police officer said.

With rivers like Jhelum, Tawi, and Chenab running close to or above danger marks, the Police, in tandem with the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, issued advisories for residents living near embankments.

“People are advised to avoid venturing near rivers and streams. Fishermen and boat operators must suspend all activities. We are appealing to the public to cooperate with evacuation orders and not spread or believe in rumours,” another Police officer said.

Relief camps established with the help of the district administration and local volunteers are being guarded and supported by Police personnel to ensure safety and smooth distribution of essentials.

The J&K Police has activated emergency control rooms at district headquarters and shared helpline numbers through official social media handles.

Authorities continue to urge residents to follow official advisories and refrain from spreading unverified information.
