Congress MP’s gold chain snatched during morning walk in Delhi

New Delhi, Aug 4: Congress MP Sudha Ramakrishnan has filed a police complaint after her gold chain was allegedly snatched during a morning walk in Delhi’s high-security Chanakyapuri area. The incident reportedly took place near the Polish Embassy while she was walking with DMK MP Rajathi on Monday morning, reports NDTV.

Ramakrishnan, who represents Mayiladuthurai in Tamil Nadu, stated that a man on a scooter, wearing a full-face helmet, approached them from the opposite direction and suddenly snatched her chain. She claimed the impact caused minor injuries to her neck and tore her clothing, though she managed to remain on her feet, reports NDTV.

Following the incident, she approached a mobile patrol unit of the Delhi Police stationed nearby and lodged an initial complaint. She has also written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, under whose jurisdiction Delhi’s law and order falls, expressing concern over the safety of public figures and civilians in a sensitive diplomatic zone like Chanakyapuri. In her letter, the MP described the attack as “shocking” given the proximity to foreign missions and government establishments, and urged authorities to trace the assailant and recover the stolen chain, which she stated was worth over four sovereigns. The police are reportedly investigating the incident. (Source: NDTV)

8-year-old brought back from brink after balloon blocks airway

Anantnag, Aug 4: An eight-year-old girl visiting from outside Jammu and Kashmir was brought back to life at Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag, after choking on a balloon and going into complete cardiac arrest.

The child had been playing when she accidentally inhaled a balloon that got stuck in her throat on Saturday evening.

She collapsed on the spot, unconscious and not breathing.

Her parents, on a visit to Kashmir, rushed her to GMC Anantnag, a journey that took about 30 minutes.

“They told us she wasn’t breathing, wasn’t moving, and they couldn’t feel a heartbeat the entire way,” said Dr Showket Shefa Shaeda, Associate Professor and Head of the Paediatrics Department, who was on hospital rounds when she arrived.

“She had no pulse, no signs of life. Her skin had started turning dark,” Dr Shaeda said. “But according to protocol, you still try, you don’t give up.”

The child was immediately taken to the Pediatric High Dependency Unit.

A team led by Dr Shaeda started cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and administered emergency medication.

“Within five minutes, her heart started beating again,” he said.

But she still wasn’t breathing properly.

During the procedure to insert a breathing tube, Dr Shaeda said something unusual.

“I saw a balloon stuck in her windpipe,” he said. “I couldn’t remove it without risk, so I carefully nudged it toward the food pipe using the breathing tube.”

Once her airway was partially cleared, doctors continued treatment and moved her to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) for ventilator support.

“Our priority was to stabilise her. Within minutes, we had a heartbeat and some breathing,” said Dr Shaeda.

He credited the newly established Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) and trained pediatric staff with saving the child’s life.

“If she had been referred to Srinagar, she likely wouldn’t have made it. This facility didn’t exist here last year, and now it’s already saving lives,” he said.

GMC Principal Dr Rukhsana Najeeb praised the emergency team’s fast, coordinated response and the hospital’s growing capacity to handle pediatric crises.

Dr Shaeda had a word of advice for parents.

“Toys are fine, but supervision is critical. Stay alert. And if something happens – even if the child seems lifeless – don’t lose hope. Get to a hospital right away. Medical science can do amazing things,” he said.

PM Modi to address NDA parliamentary meeting today

PM Modi expresses pride and gratitude to scientists, remembers Pokhran tests

New Delhi, Aug 4: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the BJP-led NDA parliamentary party meeting on Tuesday, a get-together of the ruling alliance’s MPs which is being held after a considerable gap.

The NDA meeting comes a couple of days before the filing of nominations for the vice president’s election begins from August 7. The NDA will have to announce its candidate, whose election will be a certainty due to the alliance’s majority in the electoral college, by August 21, the last date of nomination-filing and the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

The meeting comes in the middle of a session which has been all but a washout so far, except for a two-day discussion on the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor, due to a united Opposition’s ceaseless protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar by the Election Commission.

PM Modi is expected to speak on a host of current issues as the Opposition has been raising the heat over the poll body’s alleged partisan conduct, favouring the government, and the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor.

The prime minister is also likely to be felicitated by the parliamentary party over his government’s military response to the terror strike.

The electoral college for the vice president poll includes MPs of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, and its current strength is 782. If the Opposition also names a candidate, a distinct possibility, then the poll is scheduled to be held on September 9.

Sources said Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and a few BJP national general secretaries are likely to be coordinating with allies for the vice presidential poll.

Since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when the BJP lost its majority but comfortably crossed the halfway mark with allies, the sessional meeting of the party’s MPs was expanded to include its allies. PM Modi addressed the first such meeting on July 2.

However, no meeting has been held in the last few sessions.

Before the last national elections, he used to address the weekly meetings of the BJP parliamentary party, now expanded to include the party’s allies such as the TDP, JD(U), and LJP (Ram Vilas).

The meeting is attended by MPs of the ruling alliance, and PM Modi often covers a sweep of political and governance issues, and at times touches on the government’s agenda in Parliament.

He often offers the MPs talking points to be raised in public, especially in their constituencies.

Rajouri, Aug 04: A migrant worker from Uttar Pradesh was washed away in flash floods in a stream in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district on Monday, officials said, as a rescue operation was going on to trace him.

Two labourers managed to escape the flood waters but the third, identified as Pramod Kumar, was swept away by a strong current, they said.

They said rescue teams of Police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local volunteers launched an intensive search operation to trace the missing labourer.

Trump says he will ‘substantially’ raise tariffs on India over Russian oil purchase

Trump tells BBC he is 'disappointed but not done' with Putin, backs NATO and UK ties

New York/Washington, Aug 04: President Donald Trump on Monday said he will “substantially” raise US tariffs on India, accusing the country of buying massive amounts of Russian oil and selling it for big profits.

“India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits,” Trump said in a social media post.

“They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA,” he added.

Last week, Trump mounted a sharp attack on India and Russia for their close ties and said that the two countries can take their “dead economies down together”, a remark which prompted New Delhi to say that India is the world’s fastest-growing major economy.

The White House announced last week that India will face tariffs of 25 per cent after Trump issued an executive order listing the various duties that Washington will impose on exports from countries around the world.

Declaring that the US has a massive trade deficit with India, Trump had said that while “India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the world, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any country.

“Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of energy, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to stop the killing in Ukraine — All things not good!” Trump had said.
