Philippine President Marcos arrives in India on first state visit to mark 75 years of diplomatic ties

Philippine President Marcos arrives in India on first state visit to mark 75 years of diplomatic ties

New Delhi, Aug 4: Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. arrived in New Delhi on Monday afternoon for his first State Visit to India, as the two nations commemorate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. President Marcos was received at the airport by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita and accorded a ceremonial welcome.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) called the visit a significant moment in India-Philippines ties, which are anchored in shared civilizational links, mutual strategic interests, and growing economic engagement. “This visit will lead to further strengthening of India and Philippines relations,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on social media platform X.

India and the Philippines formalised diplomatic ties in November 1949, but their historical connections stretch back centuries. Linguistic and cultural influences including Sanskrit-origin words in Tagalog, the ancient Kavi-script Laguna Copperplate Inscription, and the localised Ramayana version Maharadia Lawana, bear testimony to early Indian influence on the archipelago.

As India pivoted towards East and Southeast Asia with the launch of its “Look East” Policy in 1992, later rebranded as “Act East” bilateral ties with the Philippines saw renewed vigour. The Philippines is now seen as a vital partner in India’s Indo-Pacific outreach, Vision MAHASAGAR, and maritime engagement in ASEAN.

The two countries have maintained a regular high-level dialogue in recent years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Marcos last interacted during the 21st ASEAN-India Summit and 19th East Asia Summit in Vientiane, Lao PDR, in October 2024. They had earlier met on the sidelines of the ASEAN-India Summit in Jakarta in September 2023. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Enrique A. Manalo held multiple rounds of talks over the past year. The two met in March 2025 during the Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi and again in July 2024 in Vientiane. Dr. Jaishankar also visited Manila in March 2025, where he called on President Marcos and held meetings with defence and foreign policy counterparts.

Economic engagement remains a cornerstone of bilateral ties. Two-way trade reached USD 3.5 billion in 2023–24, driven by Indian exports in pharmaceuticals, IT services, textiles, and agriculture. India is currently the largest exporter of pharmaceutical products to the Philippines, with pharma exports increasing from USD 290 million in 2020–21 to USD 460 million in 2024–25. Indian businesses have a visible presence in the Philippine market across sectors such as infrastructure, automobiles, healthcare, and chemicals. Notably, Indian firms contributed to building the passenger terminal at Clark International Airport between 2018 and 2020.

As part of the 75th-anniversary celebrations, a commemorative logo was unveiled in November 2024 by EAM Dr. Jaishankar and Philippine Ambassador Josel F. Ignacio in New Delhi. The symbolic gesture reflects a shared commitment to further deepen multifaceted ties in the years ahead. President Marcos’s ongoing State Visit is expected to include wide-ranging discussions with Indian leaders on defence, economic partnership, and regional security, further consolidating a relationship that draws strength from both ancient connections and contemporary strategic interests.

“Street light auntie” Why a Chinese shopkeeper has kept her lights on for 13 years

“Street light auntie” Why a Chinese shopkeeper has kept her lights on for 13 years

Srinagar, Aug 04: In the heart of Changsha’s old town in China’s Hunan province, a humble grocery shop glows with quiet compassion. For 13 years, 60-year-old Sun Meihua has kept her shop’s lights on every night—not for profit, but to offer a sense of safety to women walking home alone in the dark.

As reported by South China Morning post, Sun opened the shop in 2012. In her first month, a few young women told her that the light outside made them feel secure after finishing work late. From that moment, she never turned it off. Local people now call her the “street light auntie”.

Her kindness goes far beyond the light. She changed her shop’s closing time to 2 am and sometimes walks home with girls who are afraid. She also brought the landline phone from her house to the shop. Many elderly people who don’t use mobiles and children who can’t carry phones use it to call their families, for free.

According to the South China Morning Post, Sun and her husband have lived in the neighborhood for more than two decades. Having once been on the receiving end of the community’s kindness, Sun says her actions now are simply a way of giving back.

Srinagar, August 4: National Conference President Farooq Abdullah on Monday expressed deep sorrow on the demise of former Jharkhand CM Shibu Soren. Speaking with ANI, Farooq Abdullah reflected on the life of the co-founder of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, highlighting his personal struggles and determination to change people’s lives.

He struggled all his life and came to a position where he became the chief minister of Jharkhand,” Farooq Abdullah said.

The former J-K CM added, “he did everything to see that the downtrodden are brought out of poverty. He was a real leader of the people. Today, with his passing, it saddens us; the nation continues to lose good leaders…He even faced jail and came out much stronger…Today his son is following his path to remove poverty in Jharkhand.”

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey also offered his condolences and said, “I had the opportunity to work with him in Parliament. He made a significant contribution to advancing the JMM government to its current position. His death is a great loss for Jharkhand. I pray to Baba Baidyanath for Chief Minister Hemant Soren and his family.”

Additionally, Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary highlighted Shibu Soren’s efforts to bring the most backwards and poor sections of society into the mainstream.

Former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and leader of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader Shibu Soren passed away after a prolonged illness at the age of 81 on Monday morning in New Delhi.
Shibu Soren led the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha for 38 years and is known as the founding patron of the party. He served thrice as CM of Jharkhand in 2005, 2008-2009, and 2009-2010.
Popularly addressed as “Dishom Guru,” he cofounded Jharkhand Mukti Morcha with A.K. Roy and Binod Bihari Mahato and led the movement demanding a separate Jharkhand state. His dreams of a separate identity for the Jharkhand people came in fruition in 2000.
Over a four-decade career in politics, Soren was elected to the Lok Sabha eight times and served as a Rajya Sabha MP for two terms.

Security agencies gather evidence confirming Pakistani nationality of Pahalgam attackers

Security agencies gather evidence confirming Pakistani nationality of Pahalgam attackers

Srinagar, Aug 4: Security agencies have gathered evidence, including documents issued by the government of Pakistan and biometric data, confirming that the three slain foreign terrorists involved in the deadly Pahalgam attack were Pakistani nationals, officials said on Monday.

The terrorists, identified as senior Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operatives, were killed in an encounter with security forces in Dachigam forest on the outskirts of Srinagar on July 28 during an operation code-named ‘Mahadev’. They had been hiding in the Dachigam-Harwan forest belt since the April 22 attack in Pahalgam’s Baisaran meadow, which claimed 26 lives.

The evidence collected shows that no local was among these terrorists, the officials said.

Biometric records of Pakistan’s National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), voter identity slips and digital satellite phone data, including logs and GPS waypoints, are among the clinching evidence gathered by the security agencies confirming the Pakistani nationality of the three terrorists, the officials said.

They said the post-encounter investigation, including ballistics weapon-to-cartridge match and statements of two detained Kashmiri helpers, corroborated the terrorists’ involvement in the Pahalgam attack.

“For the first time, we have government-issued Pakistani documents in hand that nail the nationality of the Pahalgam attackers beyond doubt,” a senior official said.

Forensic, documentary and testimonial evidence collected during and after ‘Operation Mahadev’ conclusively shows that all three attackers were Pakistani nationals and senior LeT operatives who had been hiding in the Dachigam-Harwan forest belt since the day of the attack, the officials said, adding that no Kashmiri was part of the shooting team.

The slain terrorists were identified as Suleman Shah alias “Faizal Jatt”, an A++ category terrorist, mastermind and lead shooter; his close associate Abu Hamza alias ‘Afghan’, an A-grade commander and the second gunman; and Yasir alias ‘Jibran’, also an A-grade commander and the third gunman, the officials said.

Along with weapons, the security forces recovered Pakistani government-issued documents, such as two laminated voter slips issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan, from the pockets of Shah and Hamza, they said.

According to the officials, the voter serial numbers correspond to electoral rolls in Lahore (NA-125) and Gujranwala (NA-79), respectively.

The officials said the NADRA-linked Smart-ID chips — a micro-SD recovered from a damaged sat-phone contained the NADRA biometric records (fingerprints, facial template, family tree) of all three men — confirming their Pakistani citizenship and addresses in Changa Manga (Kasur district) and Koiyan village near Rawalakot, Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Pakistan-manufactured personal items like wrappers of ‘CandyLand’ and ‘ChocoMax’ chocolates (both brands produced in Karachi) were found in the same rucksack that carried spare magazines, the officials said, adding that lot numbers printed on wrappers were traced to a May 2024 consignment shipped to Muzaffarabad, PoK.

On forensic and technical confirmation, the officials said, the 7.62×39 mm casings found in Baisaran were test-fired against the three AK-103 rifles seized on July 28 and the striation marks matched 100 per cent while mitochondrial profiles extracted from blood on a torn shirt found in Pahalgam were identical to the DNA of the three bodies of the terrorists.

The terrorists crossed the Line of Control (LoC) through north Kashmir’s Gurez sector in May 2022, when the intelligence intercepts placed their radio check-in from the Pakistani side, the officials said.

On April 21, they moved into a ‘dhok’ (seasonal hut) at Hill Park, 2 km from Baisaran, as was stated by two detained helpers, Parvaiz and Bashir Ahmad Jothar, who sheltered them overnight and provided them cooked food before they trekked to Baisaran the next day to carry out the attack.

The GPS waypoints recovered from Shah’s Garmin device match the exact firing positions reported by eyewitnesses, the officials said, adding that they escaped towards Dachigam after carrying out the attack.

The shell casings at the scene matched the three AK-103 rifles recovered from the terrorists after the encounter, the officials said.

On digital footprints, they said a Huawei satellite phone (IMEI 86761204-XXXXXX) used by the terrorists had been pinging Inmarsat-4 F1 every night between April 22 and July 25. Triangulation narrowed the search grid to four square kilometres inside Harwan forest.

Jammu and Kashmir Police released sketches of three people — Hashim Musa, Ali Bhai alias “Talha”, and local Adil Hussain Thoker — on April 24. However, after the July 28 encounter, the agencies clarified that those sketches were based on a photograph found on a phone retrieved from an unrelated December 2024 shootout and the actual attackers were different.

Another crucial evidence of Pakistan’s involvement in the attack was the command and control links inside the neighbouring country, the officials said.

They said LeT’s south-Kashmir operations chief, Sajid Saifullah Jatt of Changa Manga in Lahore, was the overall handler as his voice samples from the recovered sat-phone matched his earlier intercepted calls.

LeT Rawalakot chief Rizwan Anees also visited the families of the slain attackers on July 29 to organise ‘Ghaibana Namaz-e-Janaza’ (funeral prayers in absentia) and its footage is now part of the Indian dossier, they said.

SC slams Rahul Gandhi for insulting Indian Army

0
Caste census result of Rahul Gandhi’s struggle: JKPCC

New Delhi, Aug 4: The Supreme Court on Monday pulled up Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi over his alleged remarks insulting the Indian Army.

During the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Gandhi had allegedly said, “Chinese troops are thrashing Indian Army soldiers in Arunachal Pradesh,” referring to the December 9, 2022, face-off in the Tawang sector.

A Bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Joymalya Bagchi expressed disapproval of Rahul Gandhi’s claim that 2,000 square kilometres of Indian territory had been occupied by China, adding that “if he were a true Indian, he would not have said all this.”

“How do you know that 2,000 square kilometres of Indian territory were occupied by the Chinese? Were you there? Do you have any credible material? If you were a true Indian, you would not say all this. When there is a conflict across the order, is it unusual to have casualties on both sides?” the Justice Datta-led Bench asked senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Rahul Gandhi.

“Whatever you have to say, why don’t you say it in the Parliament? Why do you have to say this in social media posts?” further asked the apex court.

The remarks came after Singhvi argued that it would be an “unfortunate situation” if an opposition leader cannot be allowed to raise issues of national concern in the press.

The apex court agreed to examine Rahul Gandhi’s plea, which raises the issue of mandatory notice to the proposed accused at the pre-cognisance stage, and sought responses from the Uttar Pradesh government and the complainant in the matter.

Further, the Justice Datta-led Bench granted interim relief to Rahul Gandhi against the summoning order issued by the Lucknow court.

The complainant, Udai Shankar Srivastava, a retired Director from the Border Roads Organisation, alleged that Gandhi’s statements were “false and baseless”, intended to “demoralise the Indian Army” and damage national morale.

Earlier in May, the Allahabad High Court had dismissed Rahul Gandhi’s plea to quash the criminal defamation case, rejecting the argument that the complainant lacked the legal standing to file the case, as he was not directly named.

A single-judge Bench of Justice Subhash Vidyarthi ruled that even a third party can be considered an “aggrieved person” if they are harmed by defamatory remarks.

It said, “The trial Court has rightly arrived at the decision to summon the applicant (Gandhi) to face trial for the offence under Section 500 I.P.C. after taking into consideration all the relevant facts and circumstances of the case”.

Declining to exercise its inherent powers, the Allahabad High Court observed that the trial court’s summoning order dated February 11, 2025, “did not suffer from any illegality” and refused to interfere with it.

Following this, Gandhi appeared before the MP-MLA court in Lucknow and secured bail on the condition of furnishing his personal bond of Rs 20,000 with two sureties of the like amount.

At the same time, he also approached the Supreme Court challenging the Allahabad High Court’s order refusing to quash the defamation case against him. The trial court had earlier issued multiple summonses to Rahul Gandhi in the case, but he failed to appear.

Israeli minister prays at flashpoint holy site as officials say 33 aid-seekers killed in Gaza

Israeli minister prays at flashpoint holy site as officials say 33 aid-seekers killed in Gaza

Deir Al-Balah (Gaza Strip), Aug 3: A far-right Israeli minister visited and prayed at Jerusalem’s most sensitive holy site on Sunday, triggering regional condemnation and fears that the provocative move could further escalate tensions. The visit came as hospitals in Gaza said 33 more Palestinians seeking food aid were killed by Israeli fire.

With Israel facing global criticism over famine-like conditions in the besieged strip, Itamar Ben-Gvir’s visit to the hillside compound threatened to further set back efforts by international mediators to halt Israel’s nearly two-year military offensive in Gaza.

The area, which Jews call the Temple Mount, is the holiest site in Judaism and was home to the ancient biblical temples. Muslims call the site the Noble Sanctuary. Today, it is home to the Al-Aqsa mosque, the third-holiest site in Islam.

Visits to the site by Israeli officials are considered a provocation across the Muslim world and openly praying violates a longstanding status quo. Jews have been allowed to tour it but are barred from praying, with Israeli police and troops providing security. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said after Ben-Gvir’s visit that Israel would not change the norms governing the site.

Ben-Gvir visited following Hamas’ release of videos showing two emaciated Israeli hostages. The videos caused an uproar in Israel and raised pressure on the government to reach a deal to bring home the remaining 50 hostages who were captured on October 7, 2023, in the Hamas-led attack that triggered the war.

Ben-Gvir called for Israel to annex the Gaza Strip and encourage Palestinians to leave, reviving rhetoric that has complicated negotiations to end the war. He raged against a video that Hamas released on Saturday of 24-year-old hostage Evyatar David, showing him emaciated in a dimly-lit Gaza tunnel, and called it an attempt to pressure Israel.

Ben-Gvir’s previous visits to the site have prompted threats from Palestinian militant groups. Clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinian demonstrators in and around the site fuelled an 11-day war with Hamas in 2021.

Sunday’s visit was swiftly condemned as an incitement by Palestinian leaders as well as Jordan, the Al-Aqsa mosque’s custodian, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. Houthi rebels in Yemen said they fired three drones at Israel; Israel’s military said a “suspicious aerial target launched from Yemen” was intercepted.

Videos of hungry and suffering Israeli hostages

The videos — released by Hamas and Islamic Jihad, the second-largest militant group in Gaza — triggered outrage across the Israeli political spectrum after the hostages, speaking under duress, described grim conditions and an urgent lack of food. Tens of thousands rallied in Tel Aviv on Saturday, calling on Israel and the United States to urgently pursue the hostages’ release after suspending ceasefire talks.

Israel’s mission to the UN said it requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the hostages, which will take place on Tuesday.

“They do not want a deal,” Israeii Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said of Hamas. “They want to break us using these videos of horror.”

His office said it spoke with the Red Cross to seek help in providing the hostages with food and medical care. The International Committee of the Red Cross said it was “appalled by the harrowing videos” and called for access to the hostages.

Hamas’ military wing said it was ready to respond positively to Red Cross requests to deliver food to hostages, if humanitarian corridors are opened in a “regular and permanent manner” in Gaza.

Right-wing politicians who oppose deals with Hamas said the videos reinforced their conviction that Hamas must be obliterated.

Deadly chaos around food-distribution points

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society said a staff member was killed when Israeli forces shelled its office. Israel’s military said it was reviewing the claim. The Red Cross called it an “outrage” that so many first responders have been killed in the war.

Hospital officials said Israeli forces killed at least 33 Palestinians seeking food on Sunday, and witnesses described facing gunfire as hungry crowds surged toward aid sites.

Desperation has gripped the Palestinian territory of more than 2 million (20 lakh), which experts warn faces “a worst-case scenario of famine” because of Israel’s blockade. No aid entered Gaza between March 2 and May 19, and aid has been limited since then.

Witness Yousef Abed described coming under indiscriminate fire and seeing at least three people bleeding on the ground.

“I could not stop and help them because of the bullets,” he said.

Two hospitals in southern and central Gaza reported receiving bodies from routes leading to the Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation aid sites, including 11 killed in the Teina area while trying to reach a distribution point in Khan Younis.

Three Palestinian eyewitnesses, including one travelling through Teina, told The Associated Press they saw soldiers open fire on the routes, which are in military zones. Israel’s military said it was not aware of casualties as a result of its gunfire near aid sites. GHF’s media office said there was no gunfire “near or at our sites”.

The United Nations says 859 people were killed near GHF sites from May 27 to July 31 and hundreds of others have been killed along the routes of UN-led food convoys.

GHF says its armed contractors have only used pepper spray or fired warning shots to prevent deadly crowding. Israel’s military has said it only fires warning shots. Both claim the death tolls have been exaggerated.
