ISRO targets indigenous semiconductor production in 4 years

Ahmedabad, Feb 27: Under the Centre’s Semiconductor Mission, the Indian Space Research Organisation is working to achieve indigenous semiconductor manufacturing within the next four years, aiming to meet its internal mission requirements and reduce reliance on imports, officials said during an interaction organised by the Press Information Bureau.

The ISRO centre at Ahmedabad has emerged as the epicentre of this strategic mission with dedicated teams in the Division of RF Devices and Packaging Development, headed by Shantanu Sinha, working round the clock to strengthen indigenous capabilities in semiconductor technology.

Interacting with journalists from Jammu, Punjab and Chandigarh during their visit to Gujarat organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), officials informed that the semiconductor programme is progressing at full pace.

The immediate focus is to manufacture chips required for ISRO’s own missions and satellite systems, thereby reducing dependence on external sources.

Officials disclosed that semiconductor packaging activities at the centre began in 2019, marking the first major step towards self-reliance. The next phase aims at fabrication of semiconductors, which will be followed by indigenous production of ceramic sheets used in packaging materials.

Under the “Built in India” push of the national Semiconductor Mission, ISRO is leveraging Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology, considered crucial for high-frequency and high-power applications.

The technology is expected to play a transformative role in the rollout and advancement of 5G and upcoming 6G mobile communication networks.

Significantly, ISRO has also shifted its focus towards manufacturing semiconductor fabrication equipment within India.

At present, much of this equipment is imported but the move to indigenise machinery is seen as a key step in building a complete domestic semiconductor ecosystem.

With sustained efforts and strategic planning, ISRO’s Ahmedabad centre is positioning itself at the forefront of India’s semiconductor self-reliance drive.

Spring intervention in Kupwara’s Trehgam leads to fish mortality, unsafe water

Spring intervention in Kupwara’s Trehgam leads to fish mortality, unsafe water

Kupwara, Feb 27: An intervention carried out at a natural spring in Trehgam village of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district has triggered serious environmental and public health concerns after residents reported dead fish in the water and authorities declared the source unfit for consumption.

Locals said the activity at the spring was not part of any routine sanitation programme and came as a surprise to many villagers who rely on the water source for daily use. “Whatever was done there was not normal cleaning,” said Mansoor Malik. “Soon after the work, the water changed colour and fish started floating dead. We immediately stopped using it.”

The spring serves as a primary drinking-water source for several households, making the sudden deterioration in its quality particularly alarming. Residents said they alerted officials after noticing a foul smell and murkiness in the water.

Health and water supply departments later visited the site and collected samples for laboratory analysis. Villagers said they were verbally advised not to consume the water, though no formal public notice had been displayed at the spring or in the locality at the time of filing this report. Environmental observers warn that unsupervised or poorly planned interventions in natural springs can severely disrupt fragile ecosystems. “Disturbing sediments or introducing chemicals without proper assessment can lead to oxygen depletion and the release of harmful substances,” said Tahir Ahmed an environmental activist working in the region. “Such actions must follow scientific protocols.”

Residents are now demanding clarity over who authorised the activity and under what guidelines it was carried out. “This spring is our lifeline,” said Abdul Jabbar. “We want to know who decided to interfere with it and why there was no expert supervision.”

“This spring is surrounded by chinar trees, and their leaves keep falling into the water. Since no one cleans them regularly, the leaves decompose inside the spring, which can lead to contamination and depletion of oxygen. That could be one of the reasons behind the death of the fishes,” said Khalid Ahmad Mir, a local veterinarian by profession.

The incident has renewed debate around the absence of strict procedures for interventions in Kashmir’s natural water sources, many of which support rural communities and sensitive aquatic life. For now, villagers remain dependent on alternate water supplies, waiting for answers, and for the spring to be declared safe again.

New Delhi, Feb 27: Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted three successive flight-trials of Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) from the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha. These tests were carried out to revalidate the capability of VSHORADS missile system in neutralising high-speed threats flying at varying speed, range, and altitude.

During all the flight-tests, the missiles intercepted and destroyed the high-speed aerial targets mimicking enemy aircraft in various threat scenarios meeting all extreme engagement points. The tests were carried out in final deployment configuration, where target acquisition & missile firing were carried out by field operators.

The flight data captured by various range instruments like Telemetry, Electro-Optical Tracking System and Radars deployed by ITR, Chandipur, validated the effectiveness of VSHORADS against a wide range of aerial threats. These user validation flight-trials were carried out in the presence of the representatives of Joint Forces along with senior officials from DRDO and development cum production partners.

VSHORADS is a Man Portable Air Defence system designed and developed indigenously by Research Center Imarat in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories and Development cum Production Partners. US advises embassy staff in Israel to leave now if they want, as risk of war hangs over Middle East

US advises embassy staff in Israel to leave now if they want, as risk of war hangs over Middle East

Tel Aviv, Feb 27: The US Embassy in Israel on Friday told its staff that it could leave the country and urged anyone considering departure to do so immediately, as the threat of an American strike on Iran looms.

US Ambassador Mike Huckabee told embassy employees in an email that discussions with officials in Washington had led to a decision authorizing departures for those who wished to leave.

The email was recounted to The Associated Press by someone involved with the US mission who wasn’t authorised to share details. Sent before 10:30 a.m., it urged staff considering departure to do so quickly, advising them to to focus initially on getting any flight out of Israel and to then make their way to Washington.

“Those wishing to take AD should do so TODAY,” Huckabee wrote, using an acronym for “authorized departure.”

“While there may be outbound flights over the coming days, there may not be,” he added.

Huckabee said that there was no need for panic, but for those desiring to leave, it was important to make plans soon.

The email came a day after Iran and the United States walked away from nuclear negotiations without a deal. Airlines such as Netherlands-based KLM have already announced plans to suspend flights out of Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion International Airport, and other embassies have also made plans for authorized departures from Israel and neighboring countries.

Australia on Wednesday “directed the departure of all dependents of Australian officials posted to Israel in response to the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East.” India and several European countries with missions in Iran advised citizens to avoid travel to the country as well.

On a town hall meeting Friday after the email was sent, Huckabee told staff that he was encouraging airlines to keep flying.

The departure authorisations signal a new level of contingency planning as a massive fleet of US aircraft and warships mass in the Middle East.

Badr al-Busaidi, Oman’s foreign minister who is mediating in the negotiations, said that there had been significant progress made on Thursday, though officials from Iran and the United States haven’t announced steps forward.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Thursday offered no specifics, but said “what needs to happen has been clearly spelled out from our side.”
