PM Modi becomes most followed world leader on Instagram with 100 million followers

New Delhi, Feb 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has crossed the massive milestone of 100 million followers on Instagram, making him the first world leader and politician to achieve this feat on the platform, officials said on Thursday.

Prime Minister Modi joined Instagram in 2014, and over the past decade, his account has evolved into one of the most engaging digital spaces among global leaders, officials said.

Among major global leaders, Modi now has the highest number of Instagram followers. He has more than twice as many followers as US President Donald Trump on the social media platform.

The combined follower count of the next five major world leaders is still lower than Modi’s individual total, officials said.

US President Donald Trump holds the second spot with 43.2 million followers.

He is followed by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto with 15 million followers, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva with 14.4 million followers, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan with 11.6 million followers and Argentine President Javier Milei with 6.4 million followers.

This underlines Prime Minister Modi’s unmatched global outreach and popularity among the youth across the world, officials noted.

In India, the gap in followers is significant, as Modi is far ahead of other Indian political leaders on Instagram.

The second spot is held by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath with approximately 16.1 million followers, followed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi with approximately 12.6 million followers.

NTTA welcomes cabinet nod for Srinagar Airport expansion

Srinagar, Feb 25: The Nigeen Tourist Traders Association (NTTA) has welcomed the Union Cabinet’s approval for the expansion of the Civil Enclave at Srinagar International Airport, calling it a long-awaited and transformative step for tourism and the economy of Jammu and Kashmir.

NTTA Chairman Manzoor Wangnoo said air connectivity is the Valley’s primary gateway and a critical requirement for sustaining tourism growth. He noted that upgrading airport infrastructure will strengthen Kashmir’s standing as a premier national and international destination.

The expansion is expected to boost passenger handling capacity, ease congestion, streamline arrivals and departures, and improve overall travel experience. A modern civil enclave, he said, will create a strong first impression and reflect Kashmir’s hospitality and readiness to welcome visitors.

Manzoor Wangnoo further expressed hope that the project will be implemented in a time-bound and transparent manner, with due focus on passenger amenities, safety standards, environmental considerations, and future growth requirements. He stressed that infrastructure upgrades must align with sustainable development goals, ensuring that tourism growth remains responsible and environmentally conscious.

NTTA observed that improved infrastructure will benefit hoteliers, houseboat owners, transporters, tour operators, handicraft traders, and allied sectors, while also generating employment, attracting investment, and reinforcing the service-driven economy.

PM Modi rare world leader to receive top awards from both Israel and Palestine

Jerusalem [Israel], Feb 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a rare world leader who has received top awards from both Israel and Palestine.

Israel Parliament conferred the ‘Speaker of the Knesset Medal’ on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday after his address in the Israeli Parliament. This is the highest honour of the Knesset. The Indian Prime Minister is the first leader to receive this medal.

The medal was conferred in recognition of PM Modi’s exceptional contribution through his personal leadership to strengthen strategic relations between India and Israel.

In 2018, PM Narendra Modi was conferred the Grand Collar of the State of Palestine in 2018, which is the highest Palestinian honour for foreign leaders.

After his speech in Knesset, PM Modi interacted with members of the Israeli parliament. The MPs took selfies and photographs with PM Modi.

PM Modi received standing ovation during his speech which was also marked by rapturous applause.

In his speech, PM Modi said there is great admiration for Israel’s resolve, courage, and achievements in India.

“Long before we related to each other as modern States, we were linked by ties that go back more than two thousand years. The Book of Esther refers to India as Hodu. The Talmud records trade with India in ancient times,” he said.

“Jewish merchants travelled across sea routes that connected the Mediterranean with the Indian Ocean. They came seeking opportunity and dignity. And, in India, they became one of us. Jewish communities have lived in India without fear of persecution or discrimination. They have preserved their faith and participated fully in society. That record is a source of pride for us,” he added.

PM Modi said that at the heart of the India-Israel partnership are the ties between our peoples.

“When I first visited Israel in 2006, there were a handful of Yoga centres in Israel. Today, Yoga seems to be practiced in almost every neighbourhood. I am told that interest in Ayurveda is also growing in Israel. I invite more and more young Israelis to travel to India. They will witness the dynamism of our society, and experience what holistic wellness can do for the body and the mind,” he said.

He said the Indian Parliament has set-up a Parliamentary Friendship Group for Israel.

“I invite you all to visit India and look forward to having more exchanges between our Members of Parliament,” he added.

ACB raids, registration of case result of Police’s internal-rivalry: Deputy CM

ACB raids, registration of case result of Police’s internal-rivalry: Deputy CM

Jammu, Feb 25: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Wednesday robustly defended his brother and JKP Inspector Vijay Singh Choudhary by describing “raids of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and registration of case against him (Vijay) under disproportionate assets case -result of Police’s internal rivalry.”

He alleged that the ACB steps were aimed at scuttling his (Vijay’s) promotional prospects.

“I will also request the Lieutenant Governor to identify such Police officers, who try to demoralise officers/officials who perform duty with dedication and take action against them,” Surinder Choudhary said, while responding to media queries after inspecting the riverbed area near the 4th Tawi bridge.

Earlier, J&K Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Wednesday conducted searches on the residential and business properties of Vijay Singh Choudhary, an Inspector of Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) in Jammu, Rajouri and other places, following the registration of the disproportionate assets case against him.

Vijay Singh Choudhary is the brother of J&K Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary.

“He (Vijay) is an officer, who valiantly fought against terrorists at Gursai in Mendhar; he performed duties at Surankote – when the militancy was at its peak and no officer would prefer to go there and later at Thannamandi. During his duties at different places in Chenab valley, including Doda, he bravely confronted terrorists. He was the one who faced a terrorist attack at Supwal Chowki. It was Vijay Singh Choudhary only who ensured the opening of the Police Post/Chowki at Chatha, where the officers would dread to visit even during the daytime,” Deputy Chief Minister said, while responding to media queries about the ACB raids and registration of case against JKP Inspector.

Surinder Choudhary continued his momentum as he said, “This was unfortunate that a Police officer, whose entire service career was marked by valiant acts, did not get any award from the department so far in his (professional) life for tackling crime and terrorism head on. Instead, his promotion was stopped. His entire batch was promoted to DySP rank. Today attempts are being made to stop his promotion as DySP. The (Police) officers, who during the peak of militancy would fear to come out of the confines of their rooms, are presently holding the chairs (high posts), on the basis of manipulation.”

He alleged, “Those Police officers are under the impression that they’ve attained supreme power. But I want to tell them that my family is a worshipper of Mata Vaishno Devi. I come from the family that belongs to the village of Sant Baba Sundar Singh Ali Begh Wale in Nonial. I come from a soldier family. He worked very hard and we created whatever we have at present, brick by brick through hard work and perseverance.”

In the same breath, Surinder Choudhary, referred to the case of a peon in Nowshera, who, he (DyCM) alleged, was owning four (stone) crushers.

“However, is it a sin if the married son of Vijay Singh – Surinder Choudhary’s brother – has established a crusher – just one in his (Vijay’s) entire service career? I’m Deputy Chief Minister, my children, too, are young. They have returned after completing their studies. I’ll also find some employment for them. Will it be a sin?” Deputy Chief Minister questioned.

He said it (raid, and registration of case) was very unfortunate. “It would only demoralise the hard working and performing officers. There are many officers in J&K, who hold the chair yet don’t work. Accusations were levelled against Vijay Singh Choudhary as he was performing on the ground. Those who work and deliver on the ground, obviously their enemies out of vendetta level allegations against them. I was expecting that Vijay Singh Chowdhary would be awarded and promoted for his exemplary work. But what is happening here?” he raised a question over ACB action.

Surinder Choudhary further alleged, “In fact, it is happening to scuttle his promotion prospects by few officers of JKP. Though I always commend JKP for valiantly fighting against the terrorism. But those who never worked were holding the prime postings at present. But they should remember- time will change. We will remember their actions. But rest assured, they would not damage our family or its reputation. So this (raids) is just a drama and it will go on throughout the day.”

“Had we accumulated so much wealth, we, too, would have constructed a house in a posh colony like Gandhi Nagar, Trikuta Nagar, Chhanni Himmat or Sainik Colony. We would not have been living in a place where even a vehicle cannot enter,” Deputy Chief Minister said.

Does he consider it as a politically motivated move? In response to this question, Surinder Choudhary said, “I will not say it, at this moment. I’ll only say – it is an act of internal rivalry of Police, which always caused damage to the JKP. I’ll ask LG Sahib to identify such officers.”

Delhi-Katra Expressway construction on track, will be completed by March 2027: NHAI

Delhi-Katra Expressway construction on track, will be completed by March 2027: NHAI

Jammu, Feb 25: The Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway, the fifth major expressway being developed in the country, is set for completion by March 2027, a senior official of the National Highways Authority of India said on Wednesday.

The construction of the National Expressway 5 (NE5), which began in April 2021, had significantly slowed last year due to Operation Sindoor as well as heavy rains and floods across northern states.

Once completed, the project is expected to considerably enhance regional connectivity, promote religious tourism and facilitate faster mobility for the armed forces, the official said.

The expressway will reduce the distance from Delhi to Katra from 727 to 588 kilometres, cutting travel time from 14 to about six hours, he said.

Speaking to PTI Videos here, Rajiv Kumar, project director, NHAI (Project Implementation Unit Jammu), said, “Construction of the expressway was hit badly last year in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor and later by heavy rains and flooding. But the work has gathered pace again. The deadline for its completion has been fixed for March next year.”

Kumar said the National Expressway 5 is the fifth major expressway being developed in the country and has been conceptualised as a religious corridor, supplementing existing air and rail connectivity.

“It will connect two of the most prominent pilgrimage destinations — Sri Harmandir Sahib, also known as the Golden Temple or Darbar Sahib in Amritsar (Punjab) and Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra (Reasi district, Jammu and Kashmir),” he said.

A large number of devotees visit Mata Vaishno Devi annually, the official said, explaining that they currently rely on rail and air travel. The expressway would provide a third option, enabling Delhi-Katra travel in approximately six hours.

“We had only five to six months of effective work last year. One of the biggest challenges was retaining manpower during tense security situations. Many workers left due to safety concerns and had to be persuaded to return. Additionally, heavy rains washed away two bridges, severely disrupting supply lines,” Kumar said.

Strategically, the NHAI official said, the expressway is significant for Jammu and Kashmir due to its proximity to the International Border.

“Running parallel to sensitive border areas, the corridor is expected to facilitate faster deployment and improved mobility for defence forces,” he said.

Kumar said advanced segmental bridge construction technology — a method adopted during the construction of Delhi Metro and Dwarka Expressway — is being used in the current project.

Packages 15 and 16 along the Jammu-Samba stretch included an elevated corridor of nearly 21.5 kilometres, which posed a challenge due to heavy traffic movement. However, the target was achieved using segmental bridge construction technology without disrupting traffic, the NHAI official said.

Keeping the upcoming annual Amarnath Yatra in mind, the official said, a target has been set to complete nearly 30 kilometres of the Jammu-Kathua stretch before the start of the pilgrimage later this year.

NIT hosts ExxonMobil veteran Raju Pakalapati for alumni lecture

Srinagar, Feb 25: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar hosted distinguished alumnus Raju Pakalapati, a 1989 pass-out of the Department of Chemical Engineering, for an alumni lecture that drew participation from over 100 students on campus.

A statement of NIT issued here said that the lecture is part of the  Life Beyond Classroom (LBC) series, organised by the Department of Chemical Engineering in coordination with the Dean, Alumni and International Affairs, focused on bridging academic learning with industry realities and preparing students for global engineering careers.

Pakalapati, who holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the United States, shared insights from his 27 year career at ExxonMobil, where he served in key technical and engineering management roles across upstream field production and advanced engineering functions.

Having worked across multiple US states, including Texas, Louisiana, California, and Mississippi, and on international assignments in Russia, West Africa, Iraq, Angola and the Middle East, he spoke about the importance of adaptability in diverse operational and cultural environments.

Addressing students, Pakalapati underlined that ìvision is essential for long-term career success,î urging them to define clear goals early and align personal aspirations with organisational objectives. He emphasised that while CGPA plays a critical role in initial shortlisting, especially for fresh graduates, it is not a standalone measure of success.

ìCompanies evaluate integrity, communication skills, problem-solving ability and mindset alongside academic performance,î he said, adding that trust, ethical conduct and professional reputation often determine long-term growth.

Drawing from his industry experience, he said employers value candidates who demonstrate practical skills, real-world knowledge and a willingness to learn. Cultural fit and attitude, he said, matter as much as technical competence.

Encouraging students to pursue careers aligned with their interests and strengths, Pakalapati stressed that passion drives performance and sustainable growth. He also highlighted the need for continuous self-improvement to stay relevant in a rapidly evolving energy and technology landscape.

Pakalapati pursued doctoral research in the US before briefly undertaking postdoctoral work and joining ExxonMobil.

His career represents a blend of rigorous academic grounding and hands-on production experience, a combination he described as increasingly vital in complex engineering sectors.

Currently working as an independent consultant, Pakalapati has founded ìIntegral Excellence,î an initiative aimed at mentoring engineering students and young professionals in building technical depth, leadership skills and personal balance.

In his message, Director NIT Srinagar, Prof Binod Kumar Kanaujia, said interactions with accomplished alumni such as Pakalapati provide students with invaluable exposure to global industry practices and emerging technological trends.

He emphasised that such engagements strengthen the instituteís academic ecosystem and inspire students to strive for excellence with integrity and innovation.

Registrar Prof Atikur Rehman also lauded the initiative, stating that alumni connect programmes play a vital role in fostering industry-academia collaboration and broadening studentsí professional horizons.

Dean Alumni and International Affairs,  Prof M A Shah, described the lecture as timely and relevant, particularly in the context of global climate and energy challenges.

Prof Shah said academicians and industry leaders must work together to equip young engineers with sustainable and future-ready solutions to address evolving environmental and technological demands.
