5 kids among 6 killed as massive fire tears through Meerut house; short circuit suspected

Meerut, Feb 24: Six people, including five children, were killed and a woman was injured after a fire, suspected to have been triggered by a short circuit, broke out at a house in the Lisadi Gate area here, police said on Tuesday.

“The incident occurred at Kidwai Nagar around 8 pm on Monday. Seven people were admitted to the civil hospital with burn injuries. The doctors later declared six of them dead,” Meerut SP Avinash Pandey told reporters at the hospital.

Information about the blaze at the residence of Iqbal Ahmad was received at 8:49 pm, following which police and fire brigade teams rushed to the spot and brought the flames under control, the officer said.

According to police, tailoring work was done at the house, for which a large quantity of cloth was stored there, which caused the flames to spread rapidly.

Prima facie, a short circuit is suspected to have triggered the fire, police said, adding that a detailed probe is underway.

The deceased have been identified as Rukhsar (25), Mahbish (12), Hammad (4), Akdas (4), Nabia (4 months) and Inayat (4 months), all residents of Gali No. 3 near the Surahi Wali Masjid in Kidwai Nagar, police said.

England are in a very good place, says Liam Dawson

England are in a very good place, says Liam Dawson

Pallekele, Feb 23: England all-rounder Liam Dawson on Monday said the team is “in a very good place” despite a mixed group-stage campaign in the T20 World Cup and expressed his delight at having a potent spin attack at their disposal.

England made the Super 8s after a tense couple of weeks that saw a 30-run loss to the West Indies and narrow wins over Nepal and Scotland.

However, they humbled tournament co-hosts Sri Lanka in their first Super 8s fixture and will face Pakistan here on Tuesday.

“The fight we’ve shown with the ball (against Sri Lanka) shows that this team is in a very good place,” Dawson told reporters ahead of the Pakistan game.

After being restricted to 146/9, England bowled out Sri Lanka for 95 to emerge winners by 51 runs, with their spinners accounting for seven of the 10 wickets.

Will Jacks, with his off-breaks, picked up 3/22 in four overs, while there were two wickets apiece for Adil Rashid and Dawson.

“We’re all very different types of spinners. Jacksy gets a lot of overspin and a lot of bounce. Dilly (Rashid) has all his variations. Me – I sort of don’t get the bounce that the other two get.

“It will be a different challenge on Tuesday night (against Pakistan). We might get a better batting wicket. We’ll have to see,” Dawson said.

“The beauty of this ground (Pallekele) is that you can bowl whenever and be versatile. We’ve got four good spinners, with (Jacob) Bethell. And we’ve exploited conditions here in the past. If it’s a lot better wicket on Tuesday, we might need different plans and to work differently.

“We’re all very experienced. If you look at the amount of cricket that me and Adil have played, even Jacks as well, it’s probably only with Beth that’s probably got a little bit less experience.”

Air ambulance with 7 onboard to Delhi from Ranchi crashes in Jharkhand’s Chatra

Ranchi, Feb 23: An air ambulance with seven people onboard crashed near Simaria in Jharkhand’s Chatra district on Monday evening while en route to Delhi from Ranchi, an airport official said.

There was no immediate confirmation of casualties.

The crash occurred after the aircraft took off from Ranchi airport around 7.10 pm, he added.

“An air ambulance from Ranchi with seven people onboard crashed near Simaria in Chatra district.

The plane lost contact with air traffic control around 20 minutes after take-off,” Ranchi airport director Vinod Kumar told PTI.

Inclement weather could be a reason behind the crash, but the actual cause will be ascertained only after a probe, he added.

The DGCA in a statement said, “On 23.02.2026 Redbird Airways Pvt Ltd Beechcraft C90 aircraft VT-AJV operating medical evacuation (Air Ambulance) flight on sector Ranchi-Delhi crashed in Kasaria Panchayat of Chatra district, in Jharkhand. There were seven people on board, including two crew members.”

“The aircraft was airborne from Ranchi at 19:11 IST. After establishing contact with Kolkata at 19:34 IST, aircraft lost communication and RADAR contact with Kolkata at approximately 100 NM South-East of Varanasi,” it added.

The district administration’s search and rescue team has reached the location, and an Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) team is being dispatched, the statement said.

Chatra Deputy Commissioner Keerthishree G told PTI, “The aircraft went missing around 7.30 pm. It crashed at Bariatu Panchayat in Simaria.”

She said she could not confirm casualties as the crash site is deep inside a forest.

“A team has been sent. We can confirm when the team reaches there,” she added.

Chatra SP Sumit Kumar Agarwal told PTI, “The crash site is deep in the forest. Police teams are yet to reach the spot, so we are not in a position to confirm the number of casualties.”

According to the DGCA website, Delhi-based non-scheduled operator Redbird has six aircraft in its fleet, including the one that crashed.

Anant Sinha, CEO of Devkamal Hospital in Ranchi, told PTI that the air ambulance was arranged by one of their patients.

“The patient, Sanjay Kumar (41), a resident of Chandwa in Latehar district, was brought to the hospital with 65 per cent burn injuries on February 16. He was being treated in the hospital,” he said.

He added the family members decided to take him to Delhi for better treatment.

“They arranged an air ambulance on Monday. The patient left the hospital for Delhi around 4.30 pm,” he said.

Former Chief Minister and BJP leader Champai Soren in a post on X said he was deeply saddened by the news of the air ambulance crash at Simaria.

“I pray for the safe recovery of all 7 individuals, including the crew members aboard the plane from Marang Buru (the supreme tribal deity), and for strength to their families during this difficult time,” he posted.

Kochrab Ashram continues to spread Gandhian philosophy

Jammu, Feb 23: The historic Kochrab Satyagraha Ashram in Ahmedabad continues to attract visitors, scholars and historians from across India and abroad, carrying forward the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. A team from Greater Kashmir visited the Ashram during an exposure tour for journalists organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) Jammu. Established in 1915, soon after Gandhi’s return from South Africa, Kochrab was the first ashram founded by him in India and became the starting point for several socio-political movements linked to the freedom struggle.

The Ashram is currently overseen by its Director, Dr Prasana Gandhi, who said the site continues to witness steady footfall. “A large number of people are visiting the Ashram on a daily basis, and even international historians frequent the place,” he said. Describing the Ashram as a living symbol of Gandhian values, he added that the rooms, including Gandhi’s living quarters, meeting hall and kitchen, reflect the simplicity and discipline that defined his way of life.

Dr Gandhi stressed the importance of taking the Gandhian philosophy to the younger generation. He described it as “a timeless guide for truth, non-violence and ethical living,” urging people to learn from and promote its principles. Recognised as a national monument, the Ashram has recently undergone renovation and upgradation to improve visitor experience while preserving its historic character.

Govt cuts duty benefits for exporters under RoDTEP scheme by 50%

Govt cuts duty benefits for exporters under RoDTEP scheme by 50%

New Delhi, Feb 23: The Government of India has halved duty benefits for exporters under the Remission of Duties and Taxes on Exported Products (RoDTEP) scheme, triggering sharp criticism from the exporting community at a time when Indian trade is already grappling with mounting global pressures.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued a notification with immediate effect, stating that applicable RoDTEP rates shall be capped at 50 per cent of the previously notified rates and value limits. Refund rates under the scheme, which currently range between 0.3 per cent and 3.9 per cent, will now be effectively halved across the board.

The RoDTEP scheme, launched in 2021, was designed to reimburse exporters for taxes, duties, and levies incurred during the manufacturing and distribution of export goods — costs that are not offset by any other mechanism at the central, state, or local level. The scheme has been a cornerstone of India’s export promotion strategy, providing critical financial relief to thousands of exporters across sectors.

The Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) has come out strongly against the move. FIEO President S.C. Ralhan described the timing of the cut as particularly unfortunate, noting that Indian exporters are already navigating significant global headwinds, including weakening demand in key markets and an uncertain geopolitical environment. The organisation has called on the government to reconsider the decision and restore the original benefit rates.

Industry observers warn that the reduction could undermine India’s export competitiveness at a critical juncture, potentially discouraging manufacturers from scaling up production for overseas markets. With global trade conditions remaining volatile, many exporters had been counting on the RoDTEP scheme as a financial buffer.
