MEA says India’s position on Palestine unchanged after joining West Bank initiative

New Delhi, Feb 20: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday clarified India’s decision to associate itself with a joint statement condemning Israeli expansion in the West Bank, after initially not being part of the initiative.

Responding to a question during a media briefing, the MEA spokesperson said, “you may be aware that this was not a negotiated document, as is usually the case in the UN. Our position on this issue was most recently expressed in the India-Arab League Ministerial Joint statement, which is as follows:

‘Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to achieving a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace in the Middle East, according to international law, relevant UN resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative. They called for a sovereign, independent and viable State of Palestine based on 1967 borders, living side by side in peace with Israel. Both parties supported the practice of inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.”

“In consonance with it, we have associated ourselves with the initiative keeping in mind the concerns addressed by the statement.” The clarification comes amid questions over India’s initial absence from the statement criticising Israeli settlement expansion in the West Bank and its subsequent decision to join it. India has consistently supported a negotiated two-state solution, backing the establishment of a sovereign and viable Palestinian state living side by side with Israel in peace and security.

Dr Farooq urges people to preserve, cherish mother tongue

Srinagar, Feb 20: National Conference (NC) chief Farooq Abdullah on Friday urged people to cherish and protect the linguistic heritage of Jammu and Kashmir.

On the eve of International Mother Language Day, Abdullah paid heartfelt tributes to the rich linguistic cultures of Jammu and Kashmir, urging people to preserve and proudly enunciate in the languages that define their identity.

“One’s mother tongue is not merely a means of communication, it is the heartbeat of culture, the cradle of memory and the mirror of who we are,” he said in a statement.

Emphasising the urgency of linguistic preservation, the NC president urged mother tongues to be made primary medium of instruction in schools, especially during a child’s formative years, asserting that language shapes thought, imagination, and belongingness.

Highlighting the timeless grandeur of the Kashmiri language, Abdullah spoke of its luminous legacy, its classical verses, mystical poetry, folk ballads, and scholarly works by generations of poets, sages, rhetoricians, and linguists.

He described it as a living archive of collective wisdom and artistic brilliance.

The former chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir advocated safeguarding and promotion of regional languages including Dogri, Pahari, Gojri, Punjabi and Shina, each a vibrant thread in the rich cultural tapestry of the region.

Abdullah encouraged parents to make their homes sanctuaries of their mother tongues. “Let our children inherit the music of our words,” he urged, reminding residents that speaking one’s native language should be a matter of pride, not hesitation.

NH toll plazas may go cashless from April 1; NHAI proposes only FASTag, UPI payments

NH toll plazas may go cashless from April 1; NHAI proposes only FASTag, UPI payments

New Delhi, Feb 20: Highways authority NHAI is considering discontinuing cash payments at highway toll plazas from April 1, requiring commuters to use only digital modes such as FASTag or UPI for toll payments.

Post implementation, all toll payments at National Highway fee plazas will be processed exclusively through digital modes, using FASTag or Unified Payments Interface (UPI), the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said.

The authority said it is contemplating completely discontinuing cash transactions at the National Highway fee plazas across the country from April 1, 2026, in order to develop a fully digital National Highway tolling ecosystem.

The proposed measure is aimed at consolidating the gains achieved in Electronic Toll Collection and strengthening the efficiency & reliability of National Highway fee plaza operations, it said.

The transition will help to enhance ‘Ease of Commuting’ for National Highway users by improving lane throughput, reducing congestion at fee plazas and bringing greater consistency and transparency in toll transactions.

In the past few years, over 98 per cent penetration of FASTag has significantly transformed toll collection practices in the country. At present, an overwhelming proportion of toll transactions are processed electronically through RFID-enabled FASTag affixed to vehicles, facilitating seamless and contactless movement across toll plazas.

In addition, UPI payment facilities have been operationalized at the National Highway toll plazas, ensuring availability of instant and accessible digital payment options for National Highway commuters nationwide.

As per National Highway fee rules, vehicles entering a fee plaza without a valid, functional FASTag are charged twice the applicable user fee, if the fee payment is made in cash. Whereas National Highway users who opt to pay via UPI are charged only 1.25 times of the user fee for the applicable vehicle category.

These initiatives have collectively advanced the objective of reducing dependency on cash transactions and digitizing the tolling framework.

Plaza-level assessments indicate that cash-based payments contribute to congestion, increased waiting times during peak traffic periods and transaction-related disputes.

A complete transition to digital only mode of payment will strengthen operational efficiency, improve traffic management, minimise delays and enhance overall National Highway user experience at over 1,150 fee plazas on various National Highways and Expressways in the country.

Mehbooba Mufti to PM Modi

Mehbooba Mufti to PM Modi

Srinagar, Feb 20: Emphasising that the interim Indo-US trade deal would take a toll on the nation’s farmers and fruit growers, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Friday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to revisit the deal and implement a 50 per cent import duty on apples to protect Jammu and Kashmir’s horticulture industry.

“The farmers of our country had certain safeguards before this Indo-US trade deal, but now those protections are gone. This will affect farmers across the country, making it difficult to assess the impact on Jammu and Kashmir, especially for our fruit, apple, and dry fruit growers,” Mufti told reporters here.

She highlighted that the horticulture sector in Jammu and Kashmir not only sustains livelihoods but also supports the education of children and other responsibilities.

“The youth earn their livelihoods through horticulture. With this deal, we will become economically vulnerable, and unemployment will likely increase. We lack industrialisation in J-K, and our tourism industry also depends on stability in the region,” she stated.

The former chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir expressed that there is significant concern among the people regarding the interim deal.

“First, the Iranian apples entered the market and wreaked havoc, and now, our apples cannot compete with US apples, as farmers there receive subsidies ranging from around USD 30000-40000. We have minimal subsidies here, and our transportation costs are high; we also have to purchase fertilisers ourselves,” she added.

Mufti said after 2019, when the Centre abrogated Article 370, the people of J-K “exercised great restraint” even in the face of many adversities.

“I appeal to the prime minister to consider that the people of J-K have faced various difficulties. If you take away our livelihoods, employment opportunities, and the education of our children, what will these people do? Where will the countless youths dependent on horticulture go?”

She insisted that the prime minister should reconsider the agreement and at least establish a 50 per cent import duty on apples. “I also request the government here to think about crop insurance, increasing CA stores, and also the national highway, which often closes,” she said.

The PDP president stressed that the interim trade deal would have a significant impact, not only economically but also socially.

“The drug addiction due to unemployment here will increase. Jammu and Kashmir is a sensitive state, and the prime minister is aware of the measures taken to normalise the situation here. If there is an attack on our fruit industry, which is our backbone, the consequences could be dire,” she asserted.

She reiterated her appeal to Modi to take action to protect Jammu and Kashmir’s fruit industry.

Rahul Gandhi condemns attacks on Kashmiri’s outside J-K, vows to fight hate

Srinagar, Feb 20: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi on Friday has written to Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) National Convenor Nasir Khuehami in response to concerns raised over recent attacks on Kashmiri students and shawl sellers reported from various parts of the country.

In his letter, Gandhi expressed deep concern over the recent wave of violence targeting members of the Kashmiri community. He observed that the “politics of hate” has not only weakened institutions but also fractured the nation’s social fabric, and alleged that elements, encouraged either tacitly or overtly by the ruling dispensation, have contributed to an atmosphere of fear among minorities and marginalised groups.

The Leader of Opposition unequivocally condemned violence in all its forms and reaffirmed his party’s commitment to upholding constitutional values. Expressing solidarity with the victims and their families who have endured “unimaginable pain,” Gandhi asserted that he will continue to fight hate and stand up for their right to live with dignity, security, and equal citizenship.

The development comes amid growing alarm over repeated incidents of harassment, assault, and intimidation faced by Kashmiri students and seasonal traders, particularly shawl sellers, across several states. The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association has been actively pursuing the matter with political leaders and authorities, seeking safeguards to ensure the safety and protection of the community.

No power tariff hike since Dec 2023; billing based on actual consumption: CM Omar

Jammu, Feb 20: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Friday informed the Legislative Assembly that there has been no hike in power tariff since December 2023. He stated that billing in metered areas is carried out strictly as per actual electricity consumption, while in non-metered areas, bills are raised on a flat-rate basis in accordance with the agreed load, without any arbitrariness.

725 kg honey without mandatory labels seized in HMT Srinagar

Srinagar, Feb 20: Acting on specific intelligence, the Food Safety Enforcement Drug and Food Control Organisation on Thursday carried out a targeted inspection in the Abanshah area of HMT and seized approximately 725 kilograms of honey found stored without “statutory labeling”, in violation of the Food Safety and Standards Act (FSS Act), officials said.

They said the seized stock lacked mandatory labeling details, including product name, net quantity, date of packing/manufacturing, best before/expiry date, name and address of the manufacturer or packer, FSSAI license number, and storage instructions where applicable.

The entire stock was seized on the spot, and samples were collected for analytical purposes.

Issuing a strict warning to food business operators, the officials stated that unlabelled food products are illegal and pose serious health risks. Violators will face action under the provisions of the FSS Act.

Consumers have been advised to report any suspicious or unlabelled food items by calling the Food Safety Helpline at 104. Authorities also reiterated that all packaged food products must carry complete details of the manufacturer, date of packing, and use-by date.

The seizure, THE officials said, underscores the DFCO’s zero-tolerance policy toward unsafe and non-compliant food circulating in Kashmir’s markets.
