Farooq Abdullah seeks national unity for peace in Kashmir

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 17: Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah, on Tuesday appealed for the country to stand together to fight for peace and dignity of the people of his state.

Abdullah was speaking at the valedictory function of Vision-2031, an international seminar on development and democracy organised by the Kerala State Planning Commission here.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who listened keenly to the emotionally charged speech of the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, gave him a warm hug after he returned to his seat following the address.

“We look at you and we say to ourselves, Allah, when will you wake up so that we can also walk freely, talk freely, think freely. That’s what democracy is–of the people, for the people, by the people… our children and our people who suffered, continue to suffer, even now in the north, yes, calling them Pakistanis.

“Our children, studying in schools and colleges and universities, have to pay a heavy price. When will this end,” Abdullah, the National Conference leader said, with tears welling up in his eyes and his voice choking

He said, thanking God, that the South still remains free from communal forces that have been trying to polarise the nation.

“I took this journey at 90 years of age, to tell you, think of us, pray for us so that we can get out of this tragedy that we are facing today in the north. Thank God South is still free, and I hope it remains free and develops and gets stronger. We get strength from you,” Abdullah said.

Lamenting what may be in store for Jammu and Kashmir, which predominantly depends on horticulture and tourism for its revenue, in light of India’s trade agreement with the US, Abdullah said that the Union Government has not yet provided any clarity on the agreement.

“You see the recent agreement with America, we are frightened. We don’t have oil, we don’t have gas, we have the natural beauty that God has given us. Now look at what is happening, if that is correct, because they have not explained to this day what that agreement is. We are horticultural producers. What will happen to our apples, to our walnuts, to our almonds,” he asked.

He said that India is being “dictated” to on whether it should buy Russian oil and on what it should buy and sell, and at what price.

Strongly criticising the BJP and the RSS for trying to “communally divide people” purely for electoral victory, Abdullah said that the abrogation of Article 370 and the conversion of Jammu and Kashmir into a Union Territory have not put an end to terrorism.

“But now I ask you, from August 2019 has terrorism disappeared? Has it gone? Have you forgotten Pulwama, where our 40 brave soldiers died. Have you forgotten Pahalgam? Have you forgotten recently? Udhampur,” Abdullah asked.

He said the BJP always maintained that article 370 was the reason for terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.

“They said the article 370 which had been bestowed on Kashmir created terrorism. That was their main factor. And what happened, They blew (sic) this drum all over the nation, and you bought it,” Abdhullah said.

He said his state was turned into a Union Territory, and the Assembly is rendered completely powerless.

“You pass bills. They get stuck with the Lieutenant Governor. To this day, business rules have not been completed and given to the state,” he said.

Abdullah also came down heavily against the Union Government’s alleged attempt to centralise everything and to “unconstitutionally intervene” in the powers of the state governments.

“India is supposed to be a federal country, where states have their power and Centre has its power, and both blend together for a better future. But today, things are not the same. Today, the Centre controls everything. Even jumps into the things that states had and we pay a heavy price,” Abdullah alleged.

He also wondered how Kerala had managed to stay on the path of development despite the constraints imposed by the Centre, and asked Vijayan about it.

“I wondered when the chief minister spoke here, how with all the constraints from the Centre, they’ve been able to develop the state where poverty has nearly disappeared. This was really something wonderful to hear,” Abdullah said.

He said it was not the India that the freedom fighters fought for as they fought for an India that is for everyone.

“This is not the democracy people fought for. Our forefathers did not drive Britishers out of this nation for a democracy where we would be prisoners. They fought for India, India for all, irrespective of where you belong, what you eat, the way you live, where you pray, who you pray to. That was the battle they fought. If Gandhi arises again, he will be ashamed of what has happened to this nation,” Abdullah said.

He also expressed happiness over the way Kerala is treating its people and people of this nation.

“Mr. Chief Minister, what I admire is the way your state continues to respect every religion, every human being, not only of Kerala, but of the entire nation,” he added.

Tarique Rahman sworn in as new Prime Minister of Bangladesh

Tarique Rahman sworn in as new Prime Minister of Bangladesh

Dhaka, Feb 17: BNP leader Tarique Rahman was on Tuesday sworn in as Bangladesh’s new prime minister, marking a new beginning for the country after a nearly 18-month period of political uncertainty and lawlessness under the rule of the interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, accompanied by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, represented India at the ceremony held at the open space of the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad in presence of Bangladesh’s top political and military brass.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath of office to 60-year-old Rahman at the South Plaza instead of Bangabhaban, in a departure from a long-standing tradition.

“I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office of prime minister of the government in accordance with the law,” said Rahman, who led his party to a forceful victory in the crucial general elections.

After the swearing-in, Rahman signed the oath of office and oath of secrecy. He will serve as the prime minister for the next five years.

Rahman, the son of late President Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia, returned home in December after living in London in self-exile for 17 years.

Rahman has become the prime minister for the first time. He replaced the interim government chief Yunus, under whose tenure Dhaka’s relations with New Delhi witnessed a significant downturn. Yunus took charge in August 2024 after the collapse of the Awami League regime.

Earlier in the day, Rahman was elected as leader of the parliamentary party by the BNP lawmakers.

President Shahabuddin also administered the oath to 25 ministers and 24 state ministers at the ceremony, attended by several leaders from neighbouring countries, including India and Pakistan.

The new cabinet includes two minority community members, BNP Vice President Nitai Roy Chowdhury of the Hindu faith and Dipen Dewan, a Buddhist.

In a surprise development, the new cabinet also inducted the outgoing interim regime’s security adviser, Khalilur Rahman, as a technocrat minister, while several senior BNP leaders were left out of the new cabinet.

Cabinet division officials said the portfolios of the ministers and junior ministers would be announced later, though several mainstream media outlets named the portfolios of several of them, quoting unconfirmed sources.

The BNP bagged 209 out of 297 seats, while right-wing Jamaat-e-Islami secured 68 seats in the 13th Parliamentary elections held on February 12 after a period of tumultuous political vacuum, instability and fragile security situation. The Awami League was barred from contesting polls.

The result was a major turnaround for the BNP, long targeted under the 15-year rule of the Awami League government which collapsed following nationwide student-led protests in August 2024.

Earlier in the day, newly elected lawmakers of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad (JS) took oath as members of parliament (MPs).

The Jamaat-e-Islami, which has emerged as the main opposition, boycotted the swearing-in ceremony. Jamaat’s electoral ally student-led national Citizen Party (NCP), which was floated last year with Yunus’ blessings, followed in its footsteps.

In a post-election press conference, Rahman called for “national unity” and “peace” in the national interest, warning that divisiveness would undermine democracy. He said the country faces a fragile economy, weakened institutions, and a deteriorating law and order situation.

“Our paths and opinions may differ, but in the interest of the country, we must remain united. I firmly believe that national unity is our collective strength, while division is our weakness,” he said.

He said the new government faces two major challenges – tackling the economy and ensuring good governance.

Srinagar, Feb 17: Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) senior leader and former minister Ghulam Nabi Lone Hanjura Tuesday expressed gratitude to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha over the decision of reopening closed-tourist destinations in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly Yousmarg and Dodapathri which were closed after the incident of Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025.

CM Omar thanks Home Minister Shah for reopening 14 tourist destinations in J-K

CM Omar thanks Home Minister Shah for reopening 14 tourist destinations in J-K

Srinagar, Feb 17: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday thanked Union Home Minister Amit Shah for reopening 14 tourist destinations in the Union Territory, which were closed in April last year following the Pahalgam terror attack.

“Recently, the Union home minister had come to Jammu and I had talks with him. Before that, I met him in Delhi as well. My request with regard to tourism was that the areas which have been closed should be reopened. There is no purpose served by keeping these destinations closed. We did not close these places even at the worst of times.

“I was assured by the home minister that these places will be reopened and orders for the same have now been issued. I am thankful to the home minister for that. The local people have borne losses (due to closure). Now, I hope people will visit these beautiful places,” Abdullah told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.

The lieutenant governor, who heads the security apparatus in Jammu and Kashmir, on Monday ordered the reopening of 11 tourist destinations in Kashmir and three in the Jammu region. These destinations were among the 80-odd places which were shut down for visitors in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 last year that left 26 persons, mostly tourists, dead.

On the controversial remarks made by BJP MLA Vikram Randhawa, the chief minister said the truth has prevailed. “The truth did come out after that. The case was against him (Randhawa). If my information is correct, a case was filed against him for occupying government land,” Abdullah said.

He alleged there is always a difference in the words and deeds of BJP leaders.

“It is a trait of the BJP that there is a difference in their words and deeds. They talk about Jammu and Kashmir and nominated a person to the Rajya Sabha from here. He spent 90 per cent of his (MPLAD) funds in Uttar Pradesh.

“He (Ghulam Ali Khatana) is from J-K. He has taken an official house here. Khatana sahib lives here and works from here but when it comes to CDF, he spends 90 per cent of it in UP,” Abdullah alleged.

Asked about electricity supply during the month of Ramzan, the chief minister said he is scheduled to chair a meeting of officials where all aspects and arrangements will be reviewed.

“We would make all efforts to ensure that people face the least amount of difficulty during the holy fasting month,” he added.

On the protests by daily wagers, Abdullah said there is no need for the street protests as the government has announced on the floor of the Assembly that they shall be regularised this year as per a scheduled process.

“It has been said on the floor of the Assembly that they will be regularised through a process under a time table. If somebody is provoking them for political benefits, they should not become tools in their hands.

“I will listen to you and do anything if you ask with love. Try intimidating me, then nothing will happen. If they have something to say, they should come and tell me. These street protests are not good for them or their future. We have said they will be regularised this year in a time-bound manner,” he added.

CM Omar thanks Home Minister Shah for reopening 14 tourist destinations in J-K

Srinagar, Feb 17: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said that complete satisfaction among the people of Jammu and Kashmir would only come with the restoration of statehood, asserting that sustained dialogue with the Centre was ongoing and expressing hope for a positive outcome soon. He also welcomed the reopening of 14 tourist destinations and criticised the BJP over alleged land and fund mismanagement.

Speaking to reporters at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC), CM Omar stressed that while the process has taken longer than expected, persistent dialogue with the central government continues and hopes remain high for a positive resolution.

“It is a good thing that 14 destinations have reopened. There is no point in keeping them closed,” Omar said, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO). Referring to areas like Yousmarg and Dodhpathri he said, “people living there suffered losses due to the closure of tourism. Now, our season is starting and I hope everyone will take advantage of the beauty of these places.”

“The process is ongoing, but it has taken longer than expected. We had hoped by now to receive some good news. We haven’t, but we have not lost hope. Continuous dialogue is underway with the central government. It has been 1.5 years, and hopefully, we won’t have to wait much longer for a positive update,” he said.

CM also criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), highlighting discrepancies between their statements and actions.

He referred to a pending 2021 case of government land occupation and pointed out that more than 90% of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) meant for Jammu and Kashmir is being spent elsewhere, like Uttar Pradesh.

The CM also spoke about a looming 34% electricity deficit, assuring residents that efforts would be made to minimize disruptions during city planning and ongoing preparations, especially in the holy month.

He noted said inherited deficits would be addressed over time through new projects.

CM Omar Abdullah also said that a time-bound policy for regularization would be implemented. He, however, urged people to refrain from street protests, warning that unrest could negatively affect their future. —(KNO)

Justice delayed is justice denied: CM Omar

Justice delayed is justice denied: CM Omar

Srinagar, Feb 17: Underscoring the critical role of Tele-Law in easing pressure on courts and ensuring timely justice, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said, justice delayed is justice denied and the efforts must be made to ensure that only cases requiring judicial hearings reach the courts, while others can be resolved through technology-driven legal aid under the Disha program.”

While addressing a gathering on regional workshop on tele-law activities, at Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC), Srinagar CM Omar Abdullah said, “Initiative connects citizens, especially in remote areas, to lawyers, educates them about their rights, and helps resolve disputes through mediation, thereby reducing the burden on courts and expanding access to timely justice.”

He said hat efforts should be made to reduce the number of new cases reaching courts, while ensuring that only those requiring judicial hearing are brought forward.

CM Omar also highlighted that Tele-Law, under the government’s Disha program, connects citizens, particularly in remote and rural areas, with lawyers using technology.

He said this initiative not only informs people about their rights but also promotes mediation, thereby helping resolve disputes outside courts and reducing judicial backlog.

“While urban residents may find it easier to access legal help, those in remote areas often lack awareness of their rights or access to lawyers. Tele-Law bridges this gap,” he said, noting that over 7.5 lakh citizens across 20 districts and more than 4,000 panchayats have been advised through the program.

He added that the workshop aims to evaluate the program’s success, compare performance across districts, and identify best practices that can be replicated.

CM Omar also highlighted the ancillary benefit of the initiative: it provides additional work opportunities for common service centres, enhancing their viability.

The Chief Minister also expressed hope that collaboration with the Ministry of Law & Justice will further strengthen Tele-Law, expand access to lawyers, and ensure that all citizens receive justice in a timely manner. He further termed the workshop a success and thanked all involved in its execution. —(KNO)
