At least 12 miners killed in Russian drone attack in eastern Ukraine

New Delhi, Feb 2: At least twelve miners were killed after a Russian drone struck a bus carrying workers in eastern Ukraine, according to the country’s largest private energy company, DTEK, the BBC reported. The attack took place on Sunday in the Dnipropetrovsk region as the bus was transporting miners home after their shift. Ukraine’s State Emergency Services said at least 15 others were injured. DTEK initially reported 15 deaths but later revised the toll to at least 12. In separate Russian attacks overnight, at least two more people were killed and nine injured, officials said. Meanwhile, six people were injured after a drone hit a maternity hospital in the city of Zaporizhzhia. Two of the injured were women who were in labour at the time of the strike.  Videos shared on social media, carrying official watermarks, showed shattered windows, debris-filled rooms, fire damage, and firefighters evacuating patients. Footage also showed hospital offices, patient beds, and a children’s room badly damaged. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said the hospital strike showed Russian President Vladimir Putin was waging a “war against civilians,” despite ongoing peace efforts.

Sgr-Jmu National Highway open for 2-way LMV traffic

Sgr-Jmu National Highway open for 2-way LMV traffic

Ramban, Feb 2: The Srinagar–Jammu National Highway (NH-44) remained open on Monday for two-way movement of light and medium passenger vehicles, while heavy motor vehicles (HMVs) were allowed to ply in one direction towards Kashmir, traffic authorities said.

Officials said that, subject to fair weather and improved road conditions, light motor vehicles will be permitted to travel from both sides—Jammu to Srinagar and Srinagar to Jammu—on Tuesday as well.

They added that heavy motor vehicles will be allowed to move towards Jammu from Qazigund in Kashmir.

Traffic officials monitoring the situation reported slow vehicular movement on stretches of NH-44 due to a single-lane section between Marog and Kishtwari Pather, along with the breakdown of a few heavy vehicles. They said a 20–30 metre stretch at Kishtwari Pather has been reduced to a single lane following road subsidence, due to which HMVs are being allowed to ply on alternate days.

Passengers and light motor vehicle operators have been advised to undertake travel on the Jammu–Srinagar highway strictly during daytime. Night travel has been strongly discouraged owing to the risk of shooting stones, landslides and ongoing construction work between Ramban and Banihal. Authorities also warned that frost formation between Nachlana and the Navyug Tunnel, following recent snowfall, may result in slippery road conditions.

Commuters were urged to maintain lane discipline, with officials cautioning that wrong-lane driving and improper overtaking could lead to traffic congestion. The Traffic Control Unit (TCU) Srinagar will coordinate with TCU Ramban before releasing HMVs towards Jammu on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Kishtwar–Sinthan–Anantnag road (NH-244) remains closed for vehicular traffic due to heavy snow accumulation.

The public has been advised to check the latest road status from Traffic Control Units at Jammu, Srinagar, Udhampur and Ramban before commencing their journey.

Cold relents slightly as night temperatures improve across Kashmir

Srinagar, Feb 2:: After weeks of intense cold, several parts of Kashmir witnessed a noticeable improvement in minimum temperatures on Monday, bringing some relief to residents across the Valley.

Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 2.6 degrees Celsius, several notches higher than the sub-zero conditions that prevailed through much of January. Residents said night temperatures have improved significantly in recent days, making the cold more bearable.

“The nights feel far less harsh now,” said Azad Ahmad, a resident of Srinagar’s Chanpora area. “January was extremely severe. Even indoors, it was difficult to cope with the cold,” he added.

Other parts of the Valley also reported marginal improvement in night temperatures. Qazigund recorded a low of 0.7 degrees Celsius, while Kokernag registered a minimum of minus 0.6 degrees.

In north Kashmir, Kupwara settled at minus 1.3 degrees Celsius. However, higher-altitude areas continued to experience severe cold. The ski resort of Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 8 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest place in Kashmir, while the tourist resort of Pahalgam registered a minimum of minus 5.5 degrees Celsius.

An official from the Meteorological Department said the gradual rise in temperatures was in line with seasonal trends. “There has been some improvement in minimum temperatures, but cold conditions will persist, especially in higher reaches,” the official said, adding that weather fluctuations remain likely.

According to the forecast, Kashmir is likely to witness widespread light rain or snowfall between February 2 and 3. Weather is expected to remain partly cloudy from February 4 to 6, followed by another brief spell of cloudiness with light precipitation at isolated places on February 7. Dry weather conditions are likely from February 8 to 10.

Meanwhile, authorities have advised travellers to check road conditions before undertaking journeys, particularly in snowbound areas. Farmers have been urged to suspend agricultural activities for the next seven days, while residents living in avalanche-prone zones have been cautioned against unnecessary movement.

Air India pilot reports possible defect with fuel control switch; airline grounds plane

Air India pilot reports possible defect with fuel control switch; airline grounds plane

New Delhi, Feb 02: An Air India pilot on Monday reported a possible defect with the fuel control switch of a Boeing 787-8 plane, which has now been grounded for checks, and the incident comes amid the ongoing probe into the airline’s Dreamliner crash last June.

The aircraft operated the flight AI132 from London to Bengaluru, and it landed at Bengaluru on Monday morning. There were more than 200 people on board, according to sources.

Another source aware about the incident said the fuel control switch failed to be in the ‘RUN’ position and moved towards ‘CUT OFF’ position.

‘RUN’ and ‘CUT OFF’ are used to start or shut down engines, respectively.

It could not be immediately ascertained at what stage of the flight did the Air India pilot notice the possible malfunctioning of the fuel control switch.

The functioning of the fuel control switch is in focus following the crash of Air India’s Boeing 787-8 aircraft or Dreamliner that killed 260 people last June, as the preliminary probe report mentioned about fuel supply being cut off soon after take-off.

Air India on Monday said it was aware that one of its pilots had reported a possible defect on the fuel control switch of a Boeing 787-8 aircraft.

“After receiving this initial information, we have grounded the said aircraft and are involving the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) to get the pilot’s concerns checked on a priority basis. The matter has been communicated to the aviation regulator, DGCA.

“Air India had checked the fuel control switches on all Boeing 787 aircraft in its fleet after a directive from the DGCA, and had found no issues,” the airline said in a statement.

Air India’s Boeing 787-8 has 256 seats.

In a statement, Boeing said it was in contact with Air India and was supporting their review of this matter.

There was no immediate comment from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Not-for-profit group Safety Matters Foundation on Monday said that during the operation of the flight, the crew reported abnormal behaviour of the left engine fuel control switch of the aircraft.

“During engine start, the switch failed to remain locked in the RUN position on two attempts, moving towards CUT OFF — a malfunction that could, under specific conditions, lead to an inadvertent engine shutdown in flight,” it claimed in a statement.

In one of the worst aircraft accidents in India, a total of 260 people, including 241 passengers, died after Air India’s Boeing 787-8 aircraft operating flight AI171 to London Gatwick crashed soon after take-off from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025.

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is probing the crash.

In its preliminary report on the crash that was released on July 12 last year, AAIB said the fuel supply to both engines of the plane was cut off within a gap of one second, causing confusion in the cockpit soon after take-off.

“In the cockpit voice recording, one of the pilots is heard asking the other why did he cut off. The other pilot responded that he did not do so,” it had said.

Currently, Air India has 33 Boeing 787s — 26 legacy Boeing 787-8s and 7 Boeing 787-9s, including 6 from Vistara and the new one.

In 2025, Boeing delivered 14 Boeing 787s to various airlines, including 12 Boeing 787-9s.
