Trump says India has made deal to “buy Venezuelan oil”; urges China to do the same

Washington DC, Feb 01: US President Donald Trump said that China is “welcome” to buy Venezuelan oil and India already “made” a deal to buy the oil.

Addressing reporters aboard Air Force One, he said, “China is welcome to come in and make a great deal on oil. We’ve already made a deal. India is coming in, and they’re going to be buying Venezuelan oil as opposed to buying it from Iran. So, we’ve already made the concept of the deal.”

“We’ve already made a deal. India is coming in and they’re going to be buying Venezuelan oil as opposed to buying it from Iran. We’ve already made a deal. India is coming in and they’re going, we’ve already made that deal, the concept of the deal. But China’s welcome to come in and buy oil,” he added.

The Indian government has not yet responded to Trump’s comments yet.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that Venezuela has offered Washington “50 million barrels of oil” worth USD 5.2 billion, and he has agreed to that deal.

Addressing the press on the renaming of Southern Boulevard to Donald Trump Boulevard, Trump said, “We’re dealing with the new President. We’re dealing with a lot of the people who are running the country…They said, we have 50 million barrels of oil, and we have to get it processed immediately because we have no room. Will you take it? I said, we’ll take it. It’s equivalent to USD 5.2 billion.”

Trump further commended the “great relationship” with the Venezuelan interim government, formed after the US captured former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in a military operation.

“We’ve had a great relationship with the people who are currently the Interim President and everybody else. A lot of pressure has been released,” he said.

After Maduro’s capture, Trump had made it clear that Washington would “run” Venezuela during a transition and needs “total access to the oil and to other things in their country.”

Trump’s comments also confirms recent report of New York-based news outlet Semafor that the US has made its first sale of Venezuelan oil valued at USD 500 million.

According to the Semafor report, revenue from the oil sales is currently being held in bank accounts controlled by the US government, as indicated in Friday’s order, according to the administration official. The main account, according to a second senior administration official, is located in Qatar.

EOW Kashmir chargesheets two in fake international prize money scam

Srinagar, Feb 01: The Economic Offences Wing Kashmir of the Crime Branch Jammu and Kashmir has filed a chargesheet against two accused persons in a fake international prize money scam, officials said on Sunday.

According to the officials, the chargesheet has been produced in Case FIR No. 24/2017 under Section 420 RPC read with Section 66(d) of the Information Technology Act before the Court of City Munsif (Judicial Magistrate) Srinagar, after the investigation established the involvement of the accused in a large-scale fraud.

The case was registered following a complaint in which the complainant stated that he was contacted through a fraudulent phone call claiming that he had won a prize of Rs 2.35 crore along with a car from a company claiming to be M/s Chevrolet Motors Promotion Limited, United Kingdom. The caller directed the complainant to communicate through an email address and subsequently demanded money on various pretexts to facilitate the release of the prize.

During the investigation, it was found that the complainant was asked to deposit an amount as customs duty into a bank account maintained in the name of Jitu Raj Johari at an SBI branch. After the deposit, the complainant was further instructed through emails to open an account in a foreign bank and deposit additional amounts as Charges of Transfer through an agency, which he arranged and paid. No prize money was ever transferred.

The probe revealed that Jitu Raj Johari, son of Anand Kumar Johari, resident of Faridabad, Haryana, and Suresh Thakur, son of Ramesh Thakur, resident of Muzaffarabad and presently residing in Delhi, were actively involved in the commission of the offence and had fraudulently duped the complainant of lakhs of rupees.

Officials said that based on oral, documentary and corroborative evidence collected during the course of investigation, offences under the relevant provisions of law were established against both accused persons, following which the chargesheet was presented before the competent court for judicial adjudication. India, Arab League nations back 2-state solution to Palestine issue

India, Arab League nations back 2-state solution to Palestine issue

New Delhi, Jan 31: India and the Arab League nations on Saturday laid out a broader vision for deeper two-way ties, pitched for a sovereign and viable Palestine state living side-by-side with Israel and underlined the need for conducting international relations based on the UN charter.

At the second India-Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, the two sides condemned cross-border terror and called on all countries to work collectively to combat terrorism, dismantle terror infrastructures and terror financing and bring the perpetrators of terrorist acts to justice without delay.

The India-hosted meeting saw the participation of 19 member countries of the Arab League, considered as an influential grouping.

A declaration unveiled at the end of the meeting said the two sides have agreed to strengthen joint efforts to counter terrorism in all its forms and manifestations as they have strongly condemned the heinous terror attack in Pahalgam targeting innocent Indians.

It said the Arab League member countries have reaffirmed their full and steadfast support to India in confronting terrorism in all its forms.

The declaration said the meeting discussed a wide range of regional and global issues of mutual concern, including the question of Palestine, support for multilateralism and respect for the sovereignty of states, counterterrorism and reforms of the UN Security Council.

The two sides have reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding international peace and security, it said.

“The two sides emphasised the importance of international relations being founded on respect for the Charter of the United Nations, particularly the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference in internal affairs,” the declaration said.

It added that the two sides have reaffirmed their commitment to achieving a “just, comprehensive, and lasting peace in the Middle East in accordance to international law, relevant UN resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative”.

“They called for a sovereign, independent and viable State of Palestine based on 1967 borders, living side by side in peace with Israel. Both parties supported the practice of inalienable rights of the Palestinian people,” it said.

The two sides welcomed the outcomes of last year’s Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit, which culminated in the conclusion of a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

“They commended the pivotal role played by the Arab States — particularly the Arab Republic of Egypt and the State of Qatar — as well as the United States of America,” the Delhi Declaration said.

It said the meeting urged all the parties concerned to fully comply with the implementation of the agreement and noted the launch of the Arab-Islamic plan for relief, recovery and reconstruction in the Gaza Strip.

It further underscored the necessity of ensuring adequate, sustained and unimpeded access to humanitarian and relief assistance throughout the Gaza Strip, guaranteeing the continued operations of relief agencies and international and humanitarian organisations.

The remarks by India and the Arab League nations come days after US President Donald Trump unveiled his “Board of Peace” that seeks to work towards bringing a lasting peace to Gaza and possibly, resolve global conflicts.

India and the Arab League nations also vowed to expand cooperation in the areas of energy, digital domain, heath and education.

The two sides condemned attacks by Houthi militias on maritime navigation and emphasised that the protection of the vital Bab al-Mandab Strait and the southern Red Sea is not only an Arab and regional responsibility, but also a shared international responsibility and a matter of global interest.

They warned against any attempt to undermine the stability in the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean, the declaration said.

Both sides also reaffirmed their collective determination to act as “constructive forces” for peace, equity and sustainable development, and strengthen the South-South cooperation.

Blast in Iran port city kills 1, wounds 14 before Strait of Hormuz naval drill watched by US

Dubai, Feb 01: An explosion tore through an apartment building Saturday in Iran’s port city of Bandar Abbas, killing a 4-year-old girl as local media footage purportedly showed a security force member being carried out by rescuers.

The blast happened a day before a planned naval drill by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which a fifth of all oil traded passes. The US military has warned Iran not to threaten its warships or commercial traffic in the strait, on which Bandar Abbas sits.

State television quoted a local fire official as blaming the blast on a gas leak. Media reported at least 14 others injured in the explosion.

A local newspaper, Sobh-e Sahel, aired footage of a correspondent speaking in front of the building. The footage included a sequence that showed a man in a green security force uniform being carried out on a stretcher. He wore a neck brace and appeared to be in pain, his left hand covering the branch insignia on his uniform.

The newspaper did not acknowledge the security force member being carried out elsewhere in its reporting. Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard did not discuss the blast, other than to deny that a Guard navy commander had been hurt.

Another explosion blamed on a gas explosion Saturday in the southwestern city of Ahvaz killed five people, state media reported.

Iran remains tense over a threat by US President Donald Trump to potentially launch a military strike on the country over the killing of peaceful protesters or the possible mass execution of those detained in a major crackdown over the demonstrations.

Ali Larijani, a top security official in Iran, wrote on X late Saturday that “structural arrangements for negotiations are progressing.” However, there is no public sign of any talks with the United States, which Iran’s 86-year-old Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has repeatedly ruled out.

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi on Saturday called for de-escalation and said Egypt is working to bring the US and Iran to the negotiating table to achieve a “peaceful and comprehensive settlement to the Iranian nuclear file,” according to a statement on his phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Qatar in a statement said Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani visited Tehran on Saturday and met with Larijani about “efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region.”

Silver collapses 19% to Rs 3.12 lakh per kg as strong dollar triggers global selloff

Silver collapses 19% to Rs 3.12 lakh per kg as strong dollar triggers global selloff

New Delhi, Jan 31: Silver prices collapsed 19 per cent to Rs 3.12 lakh per kg in the national capital on Saturday, while gold plunged 2 per cent to Rs 1.65 lakh per 10 grams, as investors booked profits amid a global selloff triggered by a stronger US dollar.

According to the All India Sarafa Association, silver nosedived Rs 72,500, or 18.85 per cent, to Rs 3,12,000 per kilogram (inclusive of all taxes), marking a second straight day of heavy losses, wiping out much of this week’s record gains.

The white metal had touched a record of Rs 4,04,500 per kg on Thursday before plummeting 5 per cent in the previous session.

Silver prices, however, closed January with sharp gains, soaring Rs 73,000, or 30.5 per cent, from Rs 2,39,000 per kilogram recorded on December 31, 2025, despite a steep fall in two consecutive sessions to Saturday.

Gold prices also lost sheen, sliding Rs 3,500, or 2.07 per cent, to Rs 1,65,500 per 10 grams (inclusive of all taxes). The metal of 99.9 per cent purity plunged 7.6 per cent to Rs 1,69,000 per 10 grams in the previous trade after hitting a record of Rs 1,83,000 per 10 grams on Thursday.

In January, gold prices rose by Rs 27,800, or 20.2 per cent, from Rs 1,37,700 per 10 grams recorded at the end of last year.

Analysts said the sell-off was driven by a rebound in the dollar, which weighed on gold and silver prices.

The dollar index rose 0.9 per cent to close at 97.15 after US President Donald Trump nominated Kevin Warsh, a former Fed governor and known proponent of a strong dollar, to head America’s central bank, the Federal Reserve, dented the appeal for the safe-haven assets, they added.

The carnage in both silver and gold was even more severe in global markets.

On Friday, spot silver slumped USD 31.44, or 27.07 per cent, to close at USD 84.70 per ounce, after plunging as much as 36 per cent intraday to USD 73.30 per ounce, while gold slid by USD 530.53, or 9.83 per cent, to settle at USD 4,865.35 per ounce.

During the session, the yellow metal tanked USD 689.92, or 12.8 per cent, to hit an intraday low of USD 4,683.10 per ounce.

Silver and gold had notched all-time highs of USD 121.45 and USD 5,595.02 per ounce on Thursday, driven by safe-haven demand.

Sandip Raichura, CEO of Retail Broking and Distribution & Director, PL Capital, said, “Warsh’s nomination triggered profit booking in Asia, which then spread to the rest of the world”.

Barring gold, where we believe fundamental strength will continue for years to come, though, of course, volatility will remain, other precious metals have seen some froth build up, he said.

“Silver had a non-linear run and had reached severely overbought levels. When profit booking begins, drawdowns have historically been significant, and Friday was no different, despite no major actual moves in the US dollar,” he added.

Raichura further stated that “We believe silver may lose further ground but could find a base around the USD 60 per ounce level, where it would still be trading at nearly four times the cost of production”.

On the outlook, he said, Gold is expected to continue moving upwards in the medium term towards the USD 6,000 and subsequently the USD 8,000 level over the next two years.

Gaurav Garg, Research Analyst at Lemonn Markets Desk, said the bullion has delivered exceptional gains this month, and such pullbacks are healthy consolidations rather than trend reversals.

“However, elevated prices have begun to weigh on physical demand, particularly in price-sensitive markets like India, suggesting near-term volatility may persist even as the broader bullish outlook for bullion stays intact,” he added.

Meanwhile, jewellers expect policy support ahead of the Union Budget to revive the demand.

Ahead of Budget, chorus grows for mission-mode push to HADP

Ahead of Budget, chorus grows for mission-mode push to HADP

Srinagar, Jan 31: As Jammu and Kashmir heads into the crucial budget session, the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) has moved to the centre of policy debate, with industry bodies and stakeholders pitching for a mission-mode implementation to translate its ambitious design into tangible economic outcomes.

The renewed push comes as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is set to present his second budget in the Legislative Assembly on February 5, a fiscal exercise being closely watched for signals on policy continuity, reform priorities and flagship programme funding.

Envisioned as a structural reform of J&Kís agrarian economy, HADP is among the most comprehensive agriculture-led development initiatives launched in recent years.

With a total outlay of Rs 5013 crore, the programme integrates 29 interlinked projects spanning agriculture, horticulture, livestock, fisheries, and allied sectors.

It was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 7, 2024.

At its core, HADP seeks to shift farming in J&K from subsistence-level activity to a modern, market-oriented and enterprise-driven system.

The programme addresses long-standing challenges like low productivity, fragmented landholdings, weak market access, limited value addition, and heavy dependence on imports of food and agri-products.

The 29 projects under HADP include development of the seed and seed multiplication chain in PPP mode; promotion of niche crops, vegetables and exotic vegetables under open and protected cultivation; and strengthening of the agricultural marketing system.

Other components focus on medicinal and aromatic plants, apiculture, sericulture, nutri-cereals or millets, farm mechanisation and automation, mushroom cultivation and oilseeds.

Institutional strengthening is a key pillar of the programme, with provision for the formation of 300 Farmer-Producer Organisations and the adoption of Integrated Farming Systems and Integrated Livelihood Systems to diversify farm incomes.

Projects covering commercial floriculture, development of rain-fed areas and alternative agriculture systems, including organic farming, aim to improve sustainability and climate resilience.

Technology-driven interventions include sensor-based smart agriculture, minimisation of pesticide use, creation of a J&K Soil and Land Resource Information System and innovative approaches in agriculture extension and advisory services.

The programme also provides for the production of designer plants for high-density plantation and orchard rejuvenation, alongside a J&K-level food processing programme for cluster development to boost value addition.

Livestock and allied sectors are addressed through dairy development, reorienting priorities for self-sufficiency in mutton production, a roadmap for poultry development, technological interventions for fish seed and trout production, promotion of wool and pelt processing and marketing, and development of fodder resources.

The final component focuses on support to human resource development for technological backstopping and capacity building across sectors.

Official projections indicate that HADP has the potential to generate over 2.8 lakh jobs and facilitate nearly 19,000 agri-enterprises, significantly enhancing rural incomes.

Digital platforms have been rolled out for transparency and monitoring, with more than 3.7 lakh farmers registered and close to four lakh cases processed so far.

Outreach initiatives such as the Kisan Sampark Abhiyan have covered over 90 percent of panchayats, while skilling is being supported through the Daksh Kisan portal.

As budget discussions gather momentum, the Federation of Chambers of Industries Kashmir (FCIK) has strongly advocated taking HADP forward in a mission mode, including the appointment of a full-time Mission Director with clearly defined authority and accountability. FCIK has raised the issue during pre-budget consultations with the Chief Minister and incorporated it in its submissions for the renewed industrial policy.

The FCIK has described HADP as a visionary intervention but cautioned that its success hinges on mission-driven leadership, predictable and ring-fenced budgetary support, timely fund releases and strong inter-departmental convergence.

From an industry perspective, it stressed that HADP is not merely an agriculture support scheme but a strategic economic transformation programme capable of turning farmers into agripreneurs.

Highlighting J&Kís continued dependence on imports of poultry, milk, livestock products, vegetables, seeds and processed agri-goods, industry representatives argued that effective implementation of HADP can progressively substitute imports, strengthen local supply chains and improve the regionís balance of trade.

They said that the programme lays the foundation for expanding agro-based manufacturing, food processing, cold storage, logistics, packaging and branding, creating strong linkages with MSMEs, and export-oriented units.

With the February 5 budget now in focus, stakeholders see it as a decisive opportunity to reinforce HADP as a flagship initiative.

A mission-mode approach, backed by assured funding and accountable leadership, is increasingly being viewed as critical to converting HADPís expansive vision into durable gains, positioning agriculture as a catalyst for rural industrialisation, enterprise creation and inclusive growth in Jammu and Kashmir.
