Small plane crashes in rural area of northeast Colombia, killing all 15 people on board

Bogota, Jan 29: A small plane crashed Wednesday in a rural area of Norte de Santander province in northeast Colombia, killing all 15 people on board, authorities said.

Satena, the state-owned airline that operated the flight, said local officials in the community of Curasica notified authorities about where the plane had gone down and a rescue team was deployed to “assess the condition of the passengers.”

Colombia’s Transportation Ministry later released a statement saying that “once the aircraft was located on site, authorities regrettably confirmed that there were no survivors.”

The aircraft, which has a registration number of HK4709, took off at 11:42 am local time from the airport in Cucuta, the department’s capital, bound for Ocana, a municipality surrounded by mountains, on a flight that typically lasts about 40 minutes.

The aircraft’s final contact with air traffic control came minutes after takeoff, according to a statement released by Satena.

The small plane was carrying two crew members and 13 passengers, including Diogenes Quintero, who represents the victims of the internal armed conflict in his region, the airline said.

HMVs to ply on alternate days

HMVs to ply on alternate days

Banihal, Jan 29: The Traffic Police Headquarters, Jammu and Kashmir, on Wednesday evening issued a detailed traffic plan and advisory for January 29 in view of road damage and prevailing hazardous conditions along the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44).

According to the advisory, a 40–50 metre single-lane stretch at Kishtwari Pather, affected by road sinking, has necessitated restrictions on the movement of Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs). HMVs will be permitted to ply on alternate days to ease congestion and ensure commuter safety.

Passengers and Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) operators have been advised to undertake travel on the Jammu–Srinagar highway during daytime only, while night travel has been strongly discouraged due to the risk of shooting stones, landslides, and ongoing construction work between Ramban and Banihal. The advisory also cautions commuters about frost formation between Nachlana and the Navyug Tunnel, following recent snowfall, which could result in slippery road conditions.

Traffic authorities have urged motorists to strictly follow lane discipline, warning that overtaking and wrong-lane driving could lead to traffic jams, especially on narrow stretches.

As per the traffic plan, subject to fair weather and improved road conditions, LMVs, passenger vehicles, HPVs, and private cars will be allowed to move from both Jammu and Srinagar sides on NH-44. However, HMVs will be permitted only from Jakheni (Udhampur) towards Srinagar, after assessment of road and traffic conditions. No HMV will be allowed to proceed after 2:00 pm, and the Traffic Control Unit (TCU) Udhampur will coordinate with TCU Ramban before releasing such traffic.

Arshdeep, Hardik key to India’s T20 World Cup chances: Rohit Sharma

Arshdeep, Hardik key to India’s T20 World Cup chances: Rohit Sharma

New Delhi, Jan 28: T20 World Cup-winning captain Rohit Sharma reckons all-rounder Hardik Pandya and left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh will hold the key to India’s prospects in the upcoming edition of the tournament.

Defending champions India will enter the T20 showpiece as one of the overwhelming favourites due to their massive depth and quality.

Rohit highlighted Arshdeep’s effectiveness with the new ball and at the death.

“It is a big positive to have both Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh together because they always attack for wickets. Arshdeep’s biggest strength is swinging the new ball and taking early wickets. He mainly bowls with the new ball and at the death. Starting and finishing are the most important phases, and he is strong in both,” Rohit told JioHotstar.

“With the new ball, he swings it to get left-handers caught in the slips and targets the pads of right-handers. He has also started taking the ball away from right-handers. These skills are key for a new-ball bowler. He always tries to take wickets, which is why he bowls the first over.”

Rohit added, “In the 2024 T20 World Cup final against South Africa, he did a great job. I still remember he dismissed Quinton de Kock when he was set and batting well. In the 19th over, he gave away just two or three runs, which built pressure on the South Africans.

“That is his game, bowling with the new ball and at the death, and he will play a key role for India in the 2026 T20 World Cup.”

India won the last edition of the tournament in the Americas under Rohit’s captaincy, after which the dashing opener retired from the T20 format internationally.

Rohit also spoke about how Hardik’s dual role as a finisher and multi-phase bowler provides crucial balance to the Indian team.

“Whenever Hardik Pandya is in the team, his role is huge. He bats and bowls very consistently. His batting is crucial when the team is stuck. If we have a score of 160 on the board in 15-16 overs and Hardik is batting, then he’s the one who can help the team reach 210-220 from there or if we are 50 for 4, he has to build the innings.

“Batting in the middle order at 5, 6, or 7 is very tough. That is why Hardik’s role is critical in any format. We know his bowling. He bowls in key phases, with the new ball, in the middle and in the death as well. His role is very important because he gives the team balance, letting us play six bowlers and keep our batting deep.”

Rohit said accommodating both Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy together in the playing XI is going to be a big challenge for the Indian team management.

“The biggest challenge for captain Suryakumar Yadav and coach Gautam Gambhir will be how to play both Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy together. If you want that combination, you can only do it if you play with two seamers, which is a big challenge.

“But honestly, I would be tempted to play both Varun and Kuldeep because they are wicket-takers and batters struggle to read them. I would surely pick them.”

The former India skipper added, “Looking at the conditions in India, like in this New Zealand series, there is a lot of dew. In February and March, dew will be heavy across most parts as winter ends.

“Even in Mumbai, which doesn’t get cold, there’s still dew. I’d say 90-95 percent of grounds in India have dew. That’s the challenge. What do the coach and captain think? Are they comfortable with three spinners? Then they can play spin, but there’s no fixed rule. It depends on the team leaders’ thinking.”

Rohit also urged Kuldeep to stop appealing on every ball and to rely on the wicketkeeper’s judgment for reviews.

“My one simple advice to Kuldeep is to just bowl quietly and go back to his mark. You can’t appeal on every ball. This is basic. I keep saying it, but it still happens often. Even after telling him many times, he appeals at every chance. You have to use your head. Just because it touches the pad, it doesn’t mean it’s out every time. This isn’t gully cricket.

“I get he is enthusiastic, but think of the team first. Each team only gets two DRS reviews. If I was the keeper, I could see where the ball pitched and if it was hitting, I could tell the bowler.

“But from covers or slip, you don’t know the angle. You have to listen to what the keeper and bowler say. That’s why when there’s a review off Kuldeep’s bowling, I don’t look at him, I look at the keeper to decide.”

The T20 World Cup is scheduled to be held in venues across India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8.

FICCI urges CM to prioritise local industry in Budget 2026-27

Jammu, Jan 28: The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), Jammu, has submitted a detailed set of pre-budget suggestions to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, seeking focused policy support to revive industry, commerce, tourism and allied sectors in the Union Territory of J&K.

In its representation during the pre-budget consultations, FICCI Jammu emphasised that industry, the backbone of economic growth, has remained neglected over the years, particularly local entrepreneurs who form the permanent economic base of the UT. The Chamber urged the government to prioritise local industry while simultaneously attracting outside investment.

Among key industry-related demands, FICCI called for incentives to be extended to both new and existing units undertaking substantial expansion. It sought enhancement of interest subsidy on working capital to 10 years with a ceiling of Rs 30 lakh per year, as against the existing five years and Rs 20 lakh cap. The Chamber also demanded extension of the turnover subsidy from five to ten years with full and timely disbursement, citing patchy implementation so far.

The addition of these two coaches provided 144 extra berths, helping passengers with waiting list tickets get confirmed seats, stated Raghvender Singh, Public Relations Inspector, Jammu Railway Division.

“Considering the disruption to road and air travel due to inclement weather and snowfall, the Jammu Division of Northern Railway operated a special reserved train, number 04629/04630, today, January 28, between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar. Due to the large number of tourists visiting Kashmir and to ensure their comfortable journey, two additional AC coaches were added to the special reserved train,” Singh said.

Referring to the overwhelming response the measure evoked, Singh said that the passengers appreciated the railway’s step, calling it a positive step.

“The operation of the special reserved train from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra to Srinagar with the additional coaches was successful. In this challenging situation, the special train not only proved comfortable for passengers but also generated record revenue by operating at full capacity on this historic route,” he said.

Regarding the operation of the special train, he informed that special reserved train number 04629 departed from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra at its scheduled time of 10.30 am, carrying over 800 passengers.

Similarly, special reserved train number 04630, traveling from Srinagar to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, departed from Srinagar at its scheduled time of 3 pm, carrying over 850 passengers.

More than 3000 passengers travelled on these special trains over the two days and expressed their gratitude to the railways.”

“The occupancy of these special trains was over 100 percent, and the revenue generated from these trains increased due to the addition of two extra AC coaches,” Singhal said.

He further added that such initiatives would build confidence in the railways among travellers and tourists visiting Kashmir, and would lead to an increase in the number of tourists visiting Jammu and Kashmir in the future.

Avalanche hits Sonamarg resort, no damage reported

Ganderbal, Jan 28: An avalanche hit the Sonamarg tourist resort late Tuesday night; however, there was no loss of life, officials said.

They said the avalanche hit the Sonamarg resort in Ganderbal district at 10:12 pm on Tuesday.

The massive avalanche was caught on CCTV camera, showing snow engulfing buildings, officials said.

However, they said that there were no reports of any loss of life.

Officials said that despite the intensity of the slide, there were no reports of any loss of life.

Following continuous snowfall across Kashmir, a high-intensity avalanche warning had been issued for the region on Monday.

Sonamarg and most parts of Kashmir received moderate to heavy snowfall since December 24.

About 4 feet of snow has accumulated at the health resort.

Meanwhile, locals and hoteliers living around the avalanche spot said that the situation was normal.

They said such avalanches occur at the same spot often, and there was no need to panic.

They said that the footage mainly showed winds generated by the avalanche.

After the avalanche, the Police in Ganderbal on Wednesday issued an advisory, urging people, tourists, and transporters to strictly avoid visiting or halting in avalanche-prone areas.

According to officials, the impact of the avalanche was minimal and no loss of life or property was reported.

A Police team, along with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), timely reported to the area to assess the situation.

The official said that concerned agencies were closely monitoring the situation, and precautionary measures were being taken to ensure public safety in the region.

Meanwhile, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) said snow clearance work had been launched on the Zojila Pass along the Srinagar-Leh National Highway.

An official said that machinery was pressed into work for snow clearance on the Zojila Pass, which experienced about 2 to 3 feet of snow on Monday.

The road was closed as a precautionary measure, and the road clearance work was started early Wednesday morning with the improvement in weather.

An official said that once the highway is cleared, the traffic movement would be restored after assessing the road conditions.

They said multiple avalanches and a huge accumulation of snow were making the task challenging.

The authorities urged the drivers to take precautions while travelling on the road.

Ukrainian President condemns drone strike on passenger train

New Delhi, Jan 28: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has described a Russian drone attack on a passenger train as an act of ìterrorismî, after local officials said at least four people were killed.

The train, which was carrying more than 200 passengers, was hit on Tuesday in Ukraineís north-eastern Kharkiv region.

Zelensky said four other people were still missing following the attack.

In a separate incident, officials in the southern port city of Odesa said three people were killed overnight after Russia launched a large drone attack on the city.

Russia has not commented on either incident.

Writing on social media, Zelensky said, ìIn any country, a drone strike on a civilian train would be considered in exactly the same way ñ purely as terrorism.î

He said there was no ìmilitary justificationî for targeting civilians and said 18 people had been inside the carriage that was hit.

Images released by Ukraineís emergency services showed a badly damaged train carriage still on fire after the strike.

The attack took place near the village of Yazykove.

One drone hit a carriage directly, while two others exploded close to the train.

The train was travelling from the western border town of Chop to Barvinkove in the Kharkiv region, passing through the regional capital, Kharkiv.

Meanwhile, in Odesa, officials said Russia launched more than 50 drones overnight, targeting energy facilities and other civilian infrastructure, in which three people were killed, and at least 25 were injured, officials said.

Several floors of a residential building collapsed, and nearby buildings were also damaged. Russia has stepped up drone and missile attacks on Ukraineís energy and transport infrastructure in recent months, leaving millions without heating, electricity, and water during one of the countryís harshest winters.

Moscow currently controls about 20 percent of Ukrainian territory.

The latest attacks come despite renewed Ukraine-Russia talks last week, which also involved US negotiators.

The meetings, held in the United Arab Emirates, were described as constructive, but major territorial issues remain unresolved.

Further talks are expected this weekend.
