Pakistan tried destabilising Kashmir, all efforts foiled: Deputy CM

Srinagar, Jan 26: Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary on Monday said the morale of the country’s security forces remains strong despite challenges and asserted that their responsibility has increased, particularly in tackling the drug menace and protecting the youth from addiction.

Addressing the 77th Republic Day function at Bakshi Stadium here, Choudhary paid tributes to the Army, police and other security forces, saying their sacrifices allow citizens to live in peace.

He said Pakistan had caused “immense suffering” to Jammu and Kashmir and had repeatedly attempted to disrupt peace and harm tourism in the region.

“Pakistan tried to damage Kashmir and its tourism. Our people and security forces will never allow these attempts to succeed,” he said.

Referring to past conflicts, Choudhary said Jammu and Kashmir had endured difficult phases but had now moved forward on the path of development. He said the prevailing situation in the Union Territory was peaceful and appealed to tourists from across the country and abroad to visit Kashmir.

“The valleys of Kashmir are ready to welcome tourists. Visitors will find a home-like environment here,” he said.

Choudhary highlighted the historical importance of January 26, recalling that the Constitution came into force on this day in 1950, establishing India as a sovereign, socialist, secular and democratic republic.

He also referred to the freedom struggle and the resolution for complete independence adopted in 1930.
The Deputy Chief Minister stressed the role of youth in nation-building and expressed concern over drug addiction among sections of young people.

He said the government was taking steps to address the issue through various initiatives.

He cited programmes such as Mission Youth, digital empowerment platforms, skill development courses, and entrepreneurship support systems, including online learning tools and e-courses. Choudhary said the government aims to transform Jammu and Kashmir into a skill hub of north India by 2030.

He said efforts were underway to strengthen industrial development, with new industrial estates and factories being set up in several districts. The government, he added, was working on a local employment policy to ensure job opportunities for youth.

On healthcare, Choudhary said the government was expanding medical infrastructure, including new hospitals, medical colleges and specialised facilities across the Union Territory.

He also referred to initiatives in the education sector, including schemes to improve access to schooling in remote areas and encourage girls’ education.

Choudhary said development, peace and youth participation would remain the government’s priorities.(KNS).

Foreign Affairs Expert Robinder Sachdev said that the visit of European leaders comes at a critical time as the EU-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will be signed after being in talks for 20-odd years.

EU Commissioner for Trade Maros Sefcovic said on Sunday that India and the European Union (EU) are nearing the conclusion of the free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations.

In a significant move to bolster ties between two of the world’s largest democracies, the European Union (EU) and India are set to unveil a “Security and Defence Strategic Partnership” and are closing in on a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) during the upcoming summit, EU official confirmed.

Terming the current period as a “culmination of remarkable intensifying relations,” the official noted that both sides now recognize that their security and prosperity are fundamentally linked in a shifting global landscape.

A key deliverable of the summit will be the signing of the Security and Defence Partnership by the EU’s HRVP Kaja Kallas and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. This marks only the third such comprehensive agreement the EU has signed in Asia, following Japan and the Republic of Korea.
President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen said yestrday that Europe and India have chosen strategic partnership, dialogue and openness.

Von der Leyen said that India and Europe are building mutual resilience.

Earlier in Davos, von der Leyen stated the European Union is close to finalising a Free Trade Agreement with India and noted that some describe it “the mother of all deals”.
Addressing the World Economic Forum in Davos, she stressed Europe’s intent to expand trade and international cooperation.

She also referred to the scale of the proposed trade deal with India.

“There is still work to do. But we are on the cusp of a historic trade agreement. Some call it the mother of all deals. One that would create a market of 2 billion people, accounting for almost a quarter of global GDP,” von der Leyen said.

Delhi Police deploy over 30,000 personnel, AI surveillance tools for security

New Delhi, Jan 26: Delhi Police has placed the national capital under an extensive security blanket ahead of Republic Day, deploying more than 30,000 personnel across the city as part of a multi-tier security arrangement, officials said.

Nearly 10,000 police personnel have been stationed in the New Delhi district alone, which houses the ceremonial parade route and several high-security installations.

Additional Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Kumar Mahala said elaborate arrangements have been made to ensure the smooth and secure conduct of the celebrations.

To ensure the safety and security of the Republic Day festivities, around 10,000 police officers are stationed in the New Delhi region. Checkpoints, barricades, and all standard operating protocols have been established.

He added that all officers and staff have been briefed in detail about deployment plans, location-specific duties and emergency response measures. Rehearsals and drills have already been conducted to ensure readiness.

Mahala said that over 3,000 CCTV cameras with advanced video analytics and Facial Recognition System (FRS) capabilities have been installed throughout the New Delhi area, including along the parade route and nearby locations.

According to him, the live footage from these cameras is being monitored round the clock through more than 30 control rooms, which are being operated by nearly 150 trained personnel.

Police personnel deployed on the ground are also equipped with AI-enabled glasses integrated with facial recognition and video analytics technology.

“These AI glasses, manufactured in India, are linked in real-time to police databases containing information on criminals, suspects, and proclaimed offenders. If a face matches in a crowded place, it can be identified instantly, enabling swift intervention,” Mahala said.

Officials said the security framework includes multiple layers of barricading, rigorous checking and frisking at all designated entry points, and strict access control along the parade route and adjoining areas.

To further enhance surveillance and mobility, mobile monitoring vehicles equipped with FRS technology have been strategically positioned across the city.

Sniper teams have also been deployed on thousands of rooftops in New Delhi, North Delhi and Central Delhi districts as part of the heightened alert.

Deputy commissioners of police have carried out detailed route inspections and anti-sabotage checks, while security has been intensified in crowded areas such as markets, bus terminals, metro stations and railway stations across Delhi.

Police are also conducting tenant and domestic help verification drives as part of the overall security exercise.

An officer said coordination meetings have been held with police forces of neighbouring states to ensure seamless intelligence sharing, coordination and preparedness during the national event.

The Additional Commissioner of Police urged citizens to follow security advisories and avoid carrying prohibited items strictly.

He also said the seating enclosures have been named after rivers and advised visitors to be aware of their designated enclosure, approach road and entry gate to avoid inconvenience.

Fresh encounter breaks out between security forces, terrorists in Kishtwar

Jammu, Jan 26: A fresh encounter broke out between security forces and terrorists in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir late Sunday night, officials said.

This marks the third encounter in the Chatroo belt of the hilly district over the past week, as the army and police continue their search for a group of three Pakistani terrorists linked to the Jaish-e-Mohammad outfit, despite heavy snowfall in the area.

The latest encounter began around 10.20 pm when a joint search party of the army and police was conducting operations in the Janseer-Kandiwar forest area. Security forces returned fire, and an intermittent exchange of gunfire was reported as the situation developed, officials said.

Despite the Chatroo belt being covered in snow, the army persisted in its pursuit of the terrorists following the first gunfight that occurred on January 18 in Sonnar village near Mandral-Singhpora. The initial clash resulted in the death of a paratrooper and injuries to seven other soldiers.

Although the terrorists managed to escape, utilising thick vegetation and the challenging terrain, they were intercepted a few kilometres away from the site of the first encounter on January 22.

Success again eluded the forces, but they continued their search even as the area witnessed over two feet of snowfall on Friday.

Why stock markets often trade lower ahead of Union Budgets

New Delhi, Jan 25: As the government prepares to present the Union Budget 2026-27, data from 2010-2022 shows that markets often trade lower ahead of the event due to fear of policy surprises, though post-budget rebounds are common — with an average 1.36 per cent gain in the following week, according to market watchers.

This pre-budget weakness is attributed to elevated volatility, as seen in the average 2.65 per cent intraday trading range on budget day itself, they said.

Over the past 15 years, the average return for Nifty one week before the budget has been negative at -0.52 per cent, with the index closing higher only on 8 occasions.

This pattern aligns with broader trends, where Nifty posted negative returns in the month preceding the budget in four out of the last five years, including a drop in January 2025.

“For the Union Budget 2026, expectations centre on balancing fiscal prudence with growth stimulus amid global headwinds like US tariffs under President Donald Trump,” said Rahul Sharma, Director, Head – Technical and Derivative Research, JM Financial Services Ltd.

Interpol help sought to nab Dr Muzaffar Rather for providing logistical help in Red Fort blast

Interpol help sought to nab Dr Muzaffar Rather for providing logistical help in Red Fort blast

New Delhi/Srinagar, Jan 25: An Interpol Red Corner notice may soon be issued against Dr Muzaffar Rather, an accused in the white-collar terror module, after his name emerged as a co-conspirator who provided critical logistical support and funding from Afghan soil for the devastating November 10 blast near Delhi’s Red Fort, officials said on Sunday.

Rather, a paediatrician by profession and a resident of South Kashmir, has already been declared as a proclaimed offender by a special NIA court.

The Interpol notice for Rather, who provided help in logistics, funding, communication and planning to Dr Umar-un-Nabi, the driver of the explosive-laden car that detonated outside the Red Fort killing over a dozen people, is in the process, they said.

The officials alleged that Rather has emerged as a primary co-conspirator who allegedly orchestrated the attack from abroad after fleeing India. Investigators have traced a trail of logistics, encrypted communications and radicalisation efforts that lead directly to safe havens in Afghanistan, where Rather is currently suspected to be hiding, they said.

The officials said that Umar carried out the suicide attack with support from Rather and Afghanistan-based handlers, who provided logistics, communication, funding, and planning. The officials alleged that Rather played a key role, particularly in liaison and funding.

They said Rather remained in continuous contact with the terrorists and facilitated their communication with Afghanistan-based handlers for information related to bomb-making and operational tactics. Rather left India in mid-August last year, shortly before the Delhi blast, and he first travelled to Dubai and subsequently crossed into Afghanistan, where he is currently hiding.

The officials said the interrogation of other arrested accused in the white collar terror module showed that Rather allegedly assisted in raising funds for the terror module and contributed approximately Rs 6 lakh towards the financial pool of the terror plot. In 2021, Rather had travelled to Turkey along with Dr Muzammil Ahmad Ganaie and Umar and the journey was primarily aimed at establishing contact with external handlers or as a transit attempt towards Afghanistan. Although they did not enter Afghanistan at that time, the trip is considered part of their radicalisation and preparatory network activities, the officials said. After the trip, Rather, Umar and Ganaie, who taught at Faridabad’s Al Falah University, began accumulating vast quantities of chemicals from the open market, including 360 kg of ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate and sulphur, much of which was stored near the university campus.

The terror plot fell apart when Srinagar police’s meticulous investigation led to Ganaie’s arrest and the seizure of the explosives, which possibly caused Umar to panic and led to the “premature” blast outside the Red Fort. The intricate inter-state terror network was exposed after a small but significant incident of the appearance of JeM posters on walls in Bunpora, Nowgam, on the outskirts of Srinagar on October 19 last year. Srinagar police registered a case and reviewed CCTV footage, leading to the arrest of three locals — Arif Nisar Dar alias Sahil, Yasir-ul-Ashraf, and Maqsood Ahmad Dar alias Shahid — all with prior stone-pelting cases. Their interrogation led to the arrest of Maulvi Irfan Ahmad, a former paramedic turned Imam from Shopian who allegedly supplied the posters and used his access to radicalise the doctors. The trail led the investigators to the Al Falah University in Faridabad, Haryana, where Ganaie and Dr Shaheen Sayeed were arrested, and 2,900 kg of explosive material was seized in November.

Rs 15.68 crore released for sports, physical education in govt schools

Rs 15.68 crore released for sports, physical education in govt schools

Srinagar, Jan 25: In a significant development, the government has released funds worth Rs 15.68 crores for sports and physical education to give a boost to the government schools in terms of physical wellness of the students.

An official said that funds worth Rs 15.68 crores have been released through a centrally sponsored scheme- Samagra Shiksha under Sports and Physical Education intervention.

The official said the government is making efforts to promote sports activities in schools besides providing quality education to the children.

“Ahead of the reopening of the schools post winter vacations, the schools will get funds for procurement of sports equipment for the children,” the official said.

As per the official document, each primary school will get an amount of Rs 5000 for the procurement of sports equipment, while the middle schools are entitled to an amount of Rs 10000, and high schools will get Rs 15000 for the procurement of the sports equipment.

As per the documents, the higher secondary schools will get Rs 25000 for the procurement of the sports equipment.

“Every school will receive sports equipment under Samagra Shiksha to inculcate and emphasise the relevance of sports in the school curriculum,” the official document reads.

While the department is focusing on providing schools with sports equipment, the teachers said that most of the schools, particularly at the elementary level, do not have proper playgrounds available for the students.

“Schools will purchase the sports equipment, but it will be only to show the expenditure and utilisation of  funds because there is no space available to utilise the equipment,” a group of teachers told Greater Kashmir.

Besides elementary-level schools in rural areas, there are a number of high schools in towns and cities which do not have a playground available for the students.

A few years ago, a video went viral on social media wherein the then Director of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) was seen playing cricket with school kids on a concrete path. The school was located in a congested area of old Srinagar, with no playground available for the students.
