Vigil stepped up in Kashmir ahead of Republic Day

Srinagar, Jan 25: Stringent security arrangements have been made for the Republic Day celebrations here with a three-tier security blanket thrown around Bakshi Stadium, the venue for the main official function in the valley, officials said here on Sunday.

Barricades and checkpoints have been established on all roads leading to the stadium as large number of police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed across the city to ensure smooth passage of the celebrations on Monday.

A full dress rehearsal of the Republic Day was conducted in Saturday with Divisional Commissioner Anshul Garg presiding over the function.

Police have intensified patrolling and vehicle checks in the valley to thwart any plans of anti-national elements to disrupt the celebrations.

“Police have stepped up security and checking measures across the valley to ensure a peaceful, safe, and incident-free observance of the Republic Day event,” the officials said.

They said as part of the enhanced security grid, police personnel have been deployed at strategic locations across the valley, especially in Srinagar city.

“Special checkpoints and mobile patrols have been established, where thorough checking of vehicles and individuals is being carried out. Night patrols and surprise inspections are also being conducted to maintain heightened vigilance and to deter any attempt to disturb public order,” the officials said.

They said additional deployments have been made in sensitive areas, with a special focus on monitoring suspicious movements.

Senior police officers at district level are supervising the arrangements to ensure effective and seamless implementation of the security plan, the officials said.

“The general public is requested to cooperate with the police during checking and verification processes and to promptly report any suspicious activity to the nearest Police station or the Police Control Room,” they added.

Bangladesh’s exit from T20 World Cup “sad moment”: Global players’ body

London, Jan 25: The World Cricket Association (WCA) on Sunday expressed concern over Bangladesh’s exit from the upcoming T20 World Cup , saying it was “a sad moment” that requires “deep reflection”.

The ICC on Saturday confirmed that Scotland has replaced Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup beginning February 7, saying the “difficult decision” was taken since it was not feasible to meet Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) request to shift their matches to Sri Lanka so close to the tournament.

“The withdrawal of Bangladesh from the T20 World Cup, and resulting absence of a valued cricketing nation from cricket’s pinnacle international T20 event, is a sad moment for our sport, the Bangladesh players and fans, and one that requires deep reflection,” WCA CEO Tom Moffat said in a statement.

The BCB refused to let its team travel to India citing security concerns in the wake of Mustafizur Rahman’s ouster from the IPL.

The ICC, however, maintained that there was no verifiable security threat to the Bangladesh national team, officials or supporters in India and it was not appropriate to amend the published event schedule.

“Cricket is at its strongest when every team and every player is treated with respect, supported appropriately and consistently, and able to participate on fair terms. The game is at its best when all participants are genuine contributors to its success.”

WCA is a global body for professional cricketers with membership of players from several countries. But, Indian cricketers are not members of the WCA.

“In recent times, the WCA has become increasingly concerned by broader trends in the sport, including agreements not being honoured, rights being eroded, and a lack of meaningful consultation with players and their representatives – all of this amounts to a careless approach to people that should not belong in cricket,” Moffat said.

“It also highlights significant issues with the game’s existing operating model at global level. These issues, if continued to be left unaddressed, will weaken trust, unity, and ultimately the health and future of the game we love.”

At the ICC Board meeting on Wednesday, Bangladesh lost it proposal to shift matches by an overwhelming 14-2 margin with only Pakistan supporting its cause.

The WCA CEO said the development “provides an opportunity for reflection across cricket.”

“Rather than allowing division or exclusion to take hold, we call on the game’s leaders to work with all stakeholders, including Governing Bodies, leagues and players, to unite the sport, not divide it, and in the shared interest of the game’s long-term health and success.

“On behalf of players and their associations around the world, we continue to offer our support to the Bangladesh players, who miss out on an opportunity to compete on the world stage, and to their association (CWAB). We reiterate our commitment to work constructively with the BCB and all other stakeholders to strengthen and grow our game globally.”

Srinagar, Jan 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the latest episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, highlighted the collective efforts of Sheikhgund village in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district in combating substance abuse and promoting social responsibility.

Addressing the nation, the Prime Minister said that challenges related to drugs, tobacco, cigarettes and alcohol had witnessed a significant rise in the village. He noted that the growing menace deeply concerned a local resident, Mir Jafar, who decided to take the initiative to address the issue.

The Prime Minister said Mir Jafar mobilised the entire village, bringing together youth and elders alike, to confront the problem collectively. “When the strength of family and society comes together, even the biggest challenges can be overcome,” Modi remarked.

He added that the community-led effort had a visible impact, with shops in Sheikhgund stopping the sale of tobacco products. The initiative also helped spread awareness among residents about the harmful effects of drugs and other intoxicants.

The Prime Minister praised the village’s collective resolve, saying the Sheikhgund example demonstrated how grassroots efforts and community participation can bring about meaningful social change.

Participate in democratic processes, being voter greatest privilege: PM Modi

New Delhi, Jan 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged people to take part in democratic processes, saying being a voter is not just a constitutional privilege, but an important duty that gives every citizen a voice in shaping India’s future.

In a letter to MY-Bharat volunteers on National Voters’ Day, he described voters as the decider of the destiny (bhagya vidhata) of India’s development journey.

“To be a voter is the greatest privilege and responsibility in a democracy. Voting is a sacred constitutional right and a mark of participation in Bharat’s future,” the prime minister said.

“The voter is the Bhagya Vidhata of our development journey. That indelible ink on a finger is a badge of honour that ensures our democracy remains vibrant and purposeful,” Modi said.

National Voters’ Day is celebrated on January 25 every year to mark the foundation day of the Election Commission of India.

“Many youngsters among your friends or relatives may be first-time voters. This is a moment of great significance for them. Our first-time voters should be welcomed into democracy as individuals who hold the power to transform the destiny of our country,” he said.

The prime minister said the MY-Bharat volunteers belong to a generation that does not wait for things to happen but actively participates in making things happen with a ‘Can Do’ spirit.

“You can spread awareness about the importance of becoming a voter,” he said.

He complimented all those associated with the Election Commission of India for their efforts to strengthen democratic processes.

“Being a voter is not just a constitutional privilege, but an important duty that gives every citizen a voice in shaping India’s future,” Modi said.

“Let us honour the spirit of our democracy by always taking part in democratic processes, thereby strengthening the foundations of a Viksit Bharat,” the prime minister said.

He said often people describe India as the world’s largest democracy, but at the same time, it is also the Mother of Democracy, with a history of democratic values stretching back through the centuries.

“Many youngsters among your friends or relatives may be first-time voters. This is a moment of great significance for them. Our first-time voters should be welcomed into democracy as individuals who hold the power to transform the destiny of our country,” Modi said.

He urged the youngsters to celebrate when they or a person around them becomes a voter for the first time.

“At home and in our residential societies, we can celebrate the same by sharing sweets. Our schools and colleges have a vital role to play as nurseries of democratic values,” he said.

“I encourage them to celebrate this milestone of youth becoming first-time voters, perhaps through ceremonies that recognise students reaching voting age and make them feel truly special as they step into this new responsibility,” the prime minister said.

He said the people’s commitment to voting is so deep that whether they live high in the Himalayas, in the islands of Andaman and Nicobar, in deserts or in dense forests, they turn up to ensure their voice is heard.

“This commitment to democratic ideals will motivate us for times to come,” Modi said.

“I also want to emphasise that the participation of our Nari Shakti, especially young women, is crucial for an inclusive democracy. Their awareness and active involvement have strengthened the foundations of Bharat,” the prime minister said.
