HM Shah extends greetings on NDRF’s Raising Day, calls it ‘pillar of trust’ during disasters

New Delhi, Jan 19: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday extended best wishes to the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel on their Raising Day and hailed their role in becoming a pillar of trust that India can rely on during times of natural calamities, praising their contribution in realising the Centre’s resolve to build a disaster-resilient India.

HM Shah took to X to extend his greetings to the force, and said, “Warm greetings to the personnel of NDRF on Raising Day. Through its significant role in realising the Modi govt’s resolve to build a disaster-resilient India, the NDRF has today become the pillar of trust the nation relies on during calamities. Salute to the martyrs who sacrificed themselves for the safety of others.”

Every year on January 19, India observes NDRF Raising Day, commemorating the anniversary of the formation of the National Disaster Response Force.

Established in 2006 under the Disaster Management Act, the NDRF has remained at the forefront of disaster management in the country, carrying out thousands of rescue, relief and evacuation operations across India.

The NDRF currently comprises 16 battalions of specialised disaster response personnel, strategically deployed at 68 locations nationwide. These locations are selected based on vulnerability assessments and overall threat levels identified by the agency. The presence of these base camps enables the force to reach disaster-hit areas and affected communities swiftly and efficiently.

The origins of the NDRF can be traced back to a series of devastating natural disasters that India faced between 1990 and 2004. Recognising the need for a dedicated and professional disaster response mechanism, the government enacted the Disaster Management Act on December 26, 2005. Subsequently, the National Disaster Response Force was formally constituted on January 19, 2006.

The NDRF’s motto, ‘Aapada Seva Sadaiv Sarvatra’, reflects its commitment to providing sustained disaster response services under all circumstances. Over the years, the force has lived up to this motto through its courage, discipline and dedication.

Raising Day serves to honour the bravery and selfless service of NDRF personnel who risk their lives to save others during emergencies. The occasion also helps raise public awareness about the critical role played by the force and its achievements in disaster management.

Over time, the NDRF has grown significantly in terms of training, expertise and resources to handle a wide range of natural and man-made disasters. With 1,149 personnel across its 16 battalions, the force is equipped to respond to chemical, biological and radiological emergencies as well.

So far, the NDRF has conducted more than 12,000 rescue and relief operations and has saved over 1.58 lakh lives during disasters, reaffirming its status as a dependable guardian in times of crisis.

21 dead, 30 critical after high-speed train collision in Spain

Madrid, Jan 19: At least 21 people were confirmed dead and more than 70 others injured after two high-speed trains collided near the city of Cordoba in southern Spain, authorities said.

Thirty of the injured were in serious condition and hospitalised, Spain’s Transport Minister Oscar Puente said on Monday. Earlier media reports put the number at 25.

The accident occurred at around 19:45 local time (1845 GMT) when a train carrying 317 passengers on the Malaga-Madrid route derailed for reasons still unknown near Amaduz, about 20 km from Cordoba, Spanish authorities said.

The derailed train struck another high-speed train travelling on an adjacent track from Madrid to Huelva, causing the latter to derail.

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Monday voiced deep condolences over the tragedy.

“Today is a night of deep pain for our country owing to the tragic rail accident in Adamuz,” he wrote on X. Spain’s royal family also extended condolences to the families of the victims, reports Xinhua news agency.

Puente said the collision was “terrible,” saying the last two wagons of the Malaga-Madrid train derailed and struck the first two carriages of the oncoming train, sending them off the tracks.

Emergency services from the Andalusia region were deployed to the scene, and residents helped transfer passengers with minor injuries to a nearby sports centre for first aid. Spain’s Military Emergency Unit was also mobilised to assist in rescue work.

Rescue operations continued into Sunday night as officials warned that the death toll could rise. Rail services on the affected lines will be suspended until at least Tuesday, authorities said.

Rail infrastructure operator Adif announced the opening of an area at Atocha Station in Madrid, Malaga and Huelva to provide information for relatives of affected passengers. A dedicated phone line has also been set up.

Spain’s deadliest train accident occurred in July 2013, when 79 people were killed after a high-speed train derailed while entering the city of Santiago de Compostela at excessive speed.

Dhar road to emerge as new lifeline of Jammu province: Pathania

Udhampur, Jan 18: MLA Udhampur East, R S Pathania on Sunday laid out a clear, firm and time-bound roadmap for infrastructure-led development of the region, reiterating that connectivity, safety and public convenience remained his foremost priorities.

Addressing public gatherings at various locations during his extensive tour of Talmara, Jaganoo, Thanoa, Dhanori, Sattani, Channi Morh and other adjoining habitations, Pathania stated that Dhar road was set to emerge as a major new lifeline of the Jammu province.

He informed that, following sustained follow-up and consistent support from fellow legislators and particularly from Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister, the Dhar road project reached an advanced stage of sanction and was expected to commence shortly.

Once completed, the road would transform the region into a hub of economic and social activity, providing seamless connectivity to remote habitations and strengthening regional integration, he said.

In another significant announcement, Pathania stated that Samba–Battal road stretch was entrusted to the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). He emphasised that BRO’s involvement would ensure superior construction quality, systematic maintenance and periodic technical review, which was especially crucial for the pilgrim routes leading to Mansar and Surinsar that had long suffered due to neglect and poor access. Under BRO stewardship, these long-standing connectivity issues would be addressed decisively, BJP MLA said.

Highlighting the strategic importance of Dhar Road, the MLA pointed out that it also served as a Defence Road, critical for army movement and transportation of essential supplies towards Kashmir and Ladakh. He added that BRO already acquired a 75-feet Right of Way along major stretches, eliminating the need for further land acquisition and enabling swift execution. For residents living along its alignment, Dhar Road was not merely infrastructure but a daily lifeline, he noted.

Taking serious note of chronic waterlogging in villages including Sattani, Sountha and Channi Morh, Pathania directed GREF to implement a model drainage and water-management system to prevent stagnation and recurring hardships.

The Railways department was instructed to ensure that water discharge from railway culverts is properly regulated and confined within the Right of Way, so as to prevent flooding of public and private land.

The Irrigation and Flood Control Department was directed to submit a supplementary drainage plan, focusing on scientific diversion of spillovers into designated cavity nalas along the Dhar Road drainage system and ultimately into KV Nallah.

GREF was further instructed to immediately open all blocked drainage outlets to allow equitable flow of water on both sides of the road as part of a broader disaster-mitigation framework.

The Assistant Commissioner Revenue was tasked with identifying natural nalas and tracing their historical outflows as per revenue records to prevent future encroachments and obstructions.

At Dhanori, Pathania reviewed the status of the local Sports Stadium and directed the Sports Department to submit a detailed proposal for fencing and development of a multipurpose stadium, including open-air and indoor sports facilities.

He observed that the stadium held immense importance and could be effectively utilized by students, local youth, Army personnel and staff of the adjoining Military Hospital for sports and physical fitness.

Expressing concern over garbage dumping, overhead electricity lines and unnecessary interference by certain agencies, the MLA reiterated that no authority had the right to infringe upon public land or activities beyond demarcated boundaries.

Education Dept employees without salary in Jammu as Govt delays budget release

Srinagar, Jan 18: The employees of the School Education Department (SED) in Jammu division are without their salary as the department has delayed release of the Salary budget.

J&K Teachers Forum (JKTF) has expressed concern over the move saying that the delaying monthly salary of employees was unfair to them.

In a joint statement issued here, Chairman JKTF Muhammad Shafi Rather and Chief Patron Ganesh Khajuria have expressed their serious concern over the “unjustified delay” in releasing Salary Budget of employees of education department in Jammu division.

“This is for the first time that salary budget is not released in time,” the joint statement reads

Provincial President JKTF Javaid Ahmad Bhat also castigated the authorities for the unnecessary delay in releasing the Salary Budget.

“We are experiencing this delay for the first time. It should not have happened with the employees who are working with utmost dedication and delivering their services,” Bhat said.

He said that employees were the worst victims of this official apathy.

“Heavy interests are being charged to the employees who have taken loans from the bank, besides patients are not getting life saving drugs and the employees are in trauma,” Bhat added.

The JKTF urged the government to release the salary budget of the employees of the education department so that the employees do not face any hardships in future.

Never wished to cause pain, hope my sincerity is felt: A R Rahman

New Delhi, Jan 18: Noted music composer A R Rahman shared a video post on his social media on Sunday, addressing the backlash following his comments in one of the recent interviews and said the intentions can “sometimes be misunderstood,” but he didn’t wish to cause any pain with his words.

Rahman, known for his music in films such as Roja, Bombay and Dil Se.. among others, shared a post on his Instagram handle, in which he explained the same.

The 59-year-old composer said music has always been “the way to connect, celebrate and honour India’s culture.”

“India is my inspiration, my teacher and my home. I understand that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood. But my purpose has always been to uplift, honour and serve through music. I have never wished to cause pain, and I hope my sincerity is felt,” he said in the video.

“I feel blessed to be Indian, which enables me to create a space which always allows freedom of expression and celebrates multicultural voices. From nurturing Jhalaa, presented at the WAVES summit in front of the honourable Prime Minister and Rooh-e-Noor, to collaborating with the young Naga musicians, to creating a string orchestra, to mentoring the Sunshine orchestra, also building Secret Mountain, India’s first multicultural virtual band and the honour of scoring Ramayana, alongside Hans Zimmer. Each journey has strengthened my purpose,” he said.

His comments come days after his interview with BBC Asian Network, during which he noted how less work has been coming to him due to a power shift within the Hindi film industry in recent years and said it could also be due to the “communal thing”.

“I’m not in search of work. I want work to come to me; the sincerity of my work to earn things. I feel it’s a jinx when I go on in search of things… People who are not creative have the power now to decide things and this might have been a communal thing also but not in my face. It comes to me as Chinese whispers that they booked you but the music company went ahead and hired their five composers. I said, ‘Oh that’s great, rest for me, I can chill out with my family,” he said in the interview.

KTMF takes up Uri traders’ concerns over shop displacement, power crisis

Srinagar, Jan 18: A delegation from the Kashmir Traders & Manufacturers Federation (KTMF) visited Uri today and held detailed deliberations with the Traders Federation Uri to assess problems facing the local business community, particularly the looming displacement of shops and chronic power shortages.

The delegation was led by KTMF President Mohammad Yaseen Khan and included Traders Federation Baramulla President Er. Tariq Mugloo, Javaid Ahmad Soleh, and Intikhab Alam Bhat. During the meeting, Haji Mohammad Shafi, President of Traders Federation Uri, presented a comprehensive briefing on the pressing issues confronting traders and shopkeepers in the region.

Mohammad Shafi informed the KTMF leadership that one of the major concerns is the ongoing road widening project, under which around 31 shops are likely to be dislocated. He emphasised the urgent need for a clear rehabilitation and resettlement plan for the affected traders so that their livelihoods are not jeopardised.

He further stressed that the road widening work should be executed speedily to avoid prolonged disruption to business activities, traffic movement, and daily life in the market area. Delays have already caused significant losses, traders observed.

Another key issue raised was the inadequate power supply in Uri. The Traders Federation Uri demanded that the electricity supply be enhanced and stabilised to meet the needs of commercial establishments, especially given the harsh weather conditions and increasing dependence on electrical appliances.

Apart from the formal deliberations, KTMF President Mohammad Yaseen Khan interacted extensively with a large number of local traders and shopkeepers, listening firsthand to their grievances, concerns, and suggestions. The traders shared their ground-level experiences and sought KTMF’s intervention for the resolution of their genuine demands.

Addressing the gathering, Mohammad Yaseen Khan assured the Uri trading community that KTMF fully understands the sensitivity of border-area markets and will strongly take up the issues of road widening, rehabilitation of affected shops, speedy execution of projects, and enhancement of power supply with the concerned authorities for early redressal.

“No development project should come at the cost of traders’ survival,” he said, reiterating KTMF’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of the business community.

KTMF stated that the Uri visit is part of its continued outreach programme to engage with affiliated market bodies, understand grassroots-level challenges, and ensure that the concerns of traders from all districts—particularly far-flung and border areas—are effectively projected before the authorities.
