Kangan court rejects bail of three accused in multi crore online scam

Kangan, March 17: The Court of Civil judge/Judicial Magistrate 1st Class Kangan, presided over by Moonis Wahid, rejected the bail applications of Shahnawaz Ahmad Shah, Rumaisa Jan and Dr. Amir Bashir Magray in FIR No. 28/2025 registered at Police Station Kangan, presently under investigation by the Economic Offences Wing, Crime Branch Kashmir.

The accused are facing charges under Sections 316(5), 318(4) and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita in connection with an organised cyber financial fraud allegedly exceeding ₹51 crore. Shahnawaz Ahmad Shah is a J&K Bank employee.

During the hearing, the prosecution was represented by APP Alyas Khawaja, who opposed the bail applications on the grounds of gravity and magnitude of the offence, examination of prosecution witnesses, the ongoing investigation and the fact that one co-accused is absconding while supplementary charge sheet is yet to be filed.

Investigation has revealed multiple bank accounts linked with the accused, which were lien marked on complaints from cyber police units across different states, besides thousands of UPI transactions indicating a systematic online fraud affecting numerous victims.

While rejecting bail, the court observed that economic offences of such magnitude have serious societal repercussions and require a strict approach. The court further emphasised that societal interest must prevail over individual liberty in cases of organised financial fraud affecting a large number of victims. The court also remarked that the growing menace of online trading and gaming related frauds is creating serious social harm and that such addiction driven schemes operate in a manner comparable to drug addiction.

The court also took note that one co accused is absconding outside the country, further investigation regarding financial transactions and bank accounts is continuing and a supplementary charge sheet is yet to be filed.

Considering the gravity and magnitude of the fraud, the possibility of influencing witnesses or tampering with evidence, and the likelihood that release of the accused may lead to dissipation of properties in which the alleged proceeds of crime have been invested, the court held that the accused were not entitled to bail at this stage.

Mumbai man flies 2000 km to Srinagar just for a dentist

Mumbai man flies 2000 km to Srinagar just for a dentist

Srinagar, Mar 16: In a pleasant reversal of the usual story, a young Mumbaikar travelled all the way from Dombivli to Srinagar, not for sightseeing, but exclusively for dental treatment.

Months after his December holiday in Kashmir turned painful, he came with his family for treatment follow-up mid-March, leaving as an ambassador for not just Kashmir’s tourism, but health tourism potential.

The 28-year-old Pritam Patil visited Kashmir in late December 2025 along with his five friends.

The plan was to beckon the New Year in Gulmarg.

What had been planned as a dream holiday, suddenly turned into a nightmare: Patil was struck by acute toothache, the kind that refused to subside despite heavy medication.

The friends were now looking at a derailed trip, the one they had planned meticulously months ahead.

Through a local contact, Patil and his friends reached the dental clinic of Dr Shabir Ahmad Shah at Amar Singh College Chowk Srinagar on the evening of 29 December 2025.

The doctor examined him immediately and did the needful: a dental procedure that was impending.

The very next morning Patil was pain-free.

The group resumed their Kashmir tour without missing a single day.

The holiday concluded as had been planned, smooth, exciting, and full of memories of a lifetime.

However, Patil made a stop before heading to airport for return home.

He visited Dr Shah’s clinic again to thank the doctor.

He still had several chronic dental issues, and talked to the doctor about the way forward for a better outlook for his oral health.

Back in Mumbai, and with family, he kept comparing his past experiences with renowned Mumbai dentists to the treatment he received in Srinagar.

The difference, Patil said, was striking.

“The skill was better and the warmth was incomparable,” he said.

Patil made his decision that came as a surprise even for his own family.

He decided to fly back to Kashmir solely for the remaining treatment.

In the second week of March, he landed in Srinagar again, accompanied by his cousin Kunal Adawale.

He checked into a hotel, and stayed for an entire week, visiting the Clinic of Dr Shabir multiple times.

On March 13, the final phase of the treatment was completed to Patil’s complete satisfaction.

“After years of dental work in Mumbai, I can confidently say the expertise and care I received here is unmatched,” Patil said.

He was all praise for his dentist, his saviour.

“Dr Shabir is not just a doctor, he is an artist with a heart of gold,” Patil said.

Beyond the clinic, the Mumbai duo was touched by the kindness they experienced from hotel staff and local people to shopkeepers and even strangers on the street.

Declaring themselves as unofficial but real ambassadors of Kashmir, the duo before heading home said, “We will tell everyone back home about the incredible medical talent here, the professionalism, the honesty, and above all, the warmth of Kashmiri society.”

After leaving Srinagar, the Mumbai family planned to pay their respect at the shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi in Katra.

Then they fly back carrying not just perfectly treated teeth, but also a bag full of memories and a newfound love for Kashmir.

1 dead, 1 injured in Kishtwar landslide; 230 rescued

Jammu, Mar 16: One person died and another was injured in a landslide near a hydro-power project, while over 230 people, including women and children, were evacuated after they were caught in heavy snowfall at the high-altitude Sinthan Top in Kishtwar district of Chenab Valley, officials said on Monday.

In view of the inclement weather, the authorities have ordered the closure of all educational institutions outside the municipal limits in Kishtwar and adjoining Doda district for Monday as a precautionary measure, the officials said.

A landslide, triggered by rain, struck a hydro-power project site near Dangduru in Kishtwar district on the intervening night of Sunday-Monday, trapping two workers, the officials said.

While one worker was later found dead, the other was rescued in an injured condition and shifted to a hospital, they said.

In another incident, the officials said, a joint rescue operation by the Police, Army, and the civil administration successfully evacuated 38 vehicles carrying 235 passengers to safety amid heavy snowfall at the Sinthan Top connecting Kishtwar in Jammu region with south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

“On March 15, information was received that 235 civilians were stranded at Sinthan top due to heavy snowfall and severe weather conditions. Troops of the White Knight Corps were immediately mobilised to launch a swift rescue operation despite the treacherous terrain and relentless snowfall. Braving extreme weather and snow-blocked roads, the rescue teams reached Sinthan top and provided the stranded civilians with hot meals, drinking water and shelter. Repair and recovery teams restored the mobility of the stranded vehicles, while passengers from the unrecoverable vehicles were safely evacuated. Medical teams rendered assistance and essential medicines to those in need,” the White Knight Corps said in a post on X.

“The mission witnessed seamless coordination between the Army, J&K Police and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation, reaffirming the Army’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives in the harshest conditions,” the post said.

Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar, Pankaj Kumar Sharma, along with SSP Naresh Singh and the commanding officer of the 11 Rashtriya Rifles, supervised the rescue operation, which continued for several hours, the officials said.

Devyani Rana inaugurates Mathwar FPO office at Agore

Jammu, Mar 16: MLA Nagrota Devyani Rana today inaugurated the office of the Mathwar Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO) at Agore and launched a one-day awareness programme aimed at educating farmers about the functioning and benefits of Farmer Producer Organisations.

Describing the occasion as a “dream come true,” the MLA recalled the vision of her late father, Devender Singh Rana, former legislator and a dedicated representative of the constituency who worked tirelessly for the welfare of farmers in the region. She said it was his determination and commitment that led to the registration and sanctioning of The Mathwar Farmer Producer Organisation Cooperative Limited, laying the foundation for institutional support to the farming community of the area.

Rana said that the inauguration of the FPO office marks the realisation of that vision and a significant step towards empowering farmers through collective efforts and cooperative initiatives.

The Mathwar FPO has been established with financial assistance from the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), a premier Government of India institution that promotes cooperative development across the country. The initiative seeks to empower farmers by enabling them to work collectively, improve productivity, access better markets and enhance their income through organised agricultural activities.

Speaking on the occasion, Devyani Rana said that Farmer-Producer Organisations have emerged as an important instrument for strengthening the rural economy and improving the socio-economic condition of farmers. She emphasised that the cooperative model encourages collective efforts, enhances bargaining power and enables farmers to benefit from economies of scale.

“Farmer Producer Organisations provide a strong platform for farmers to come together, share resources and collectively address challenges faced in agriculture. Through FPOs, farmers can access quality inputs, modern technologies, credit facilities and improved marketing opportunities,” she said.

Addressing progressive farmers of Block Mathwar during the awareness programme organised under the Central Sector Scheme for promotion of FPOs, the MLA said that cooperatives embody the true spirit of collective progress by uniting individuals, pooling resources and creating opportunities for equitable development.

She observed that in recent years the cooperative sector has received unprecedented institutional support at the national level, which has infused fresh energy into grassroots organisations. According to her, the renewed focus on cooperatives has enabled the sector to emerge as a key driver of rural prosperity, entrepreneurship and self-reliance.

The newly inaugurated Mathwar FPO office at Agore is expected to serve as a key hub for farmers of the surrounding areas, enabling them to coordinate activities, receive technical guidance and expand their agricultural enterprises through cooperative efforts, she added.

Referring to the guiding philosophy of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas,” Rana said these values reflect the essence of cooperation where progress is achieved through shared effort and collective responsibility. She added that dedicated initiatives over the past decade have created pathways for farmers to gain better market access, secure fair returns and build sustainable livelihoods.

Second batch of 80 Indian students evacuated from Iran to reach Delhi tonight via Armenia-Dubai route: JKSA

Second batch of 80 Indian students evacuated from Iran to reach Delhi tonight via Armenia-Dubai route: JKSA

Srinagar, Mar 16: The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) on Monday said that the second batch of around 80 Indians, including students and pilgrims, is set to arrive at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), New Delhi, later this evening on a commercial flight, as part of ongoing efforts to facilitate the return of those stranded in Iran amid the prevailing war-like situation in the region.

In a statement, National Convenor of the Association, Nasir Khuehami, said that the students and pilgrims, many of whom had been stranded in war-torn Iran, are returning safely to India via a connecting journey through Armenia and Dubai, following coordinated efforts undertaken to facilitate their evacuation.

Khuehami said the group initially travelled from Yerevan Airport in Armenia to Dubai and is currently onboard Flydubai flight FZ441, which is scheduled to arrive at Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi, at around 9:18 PM today.

He said the journey faced unexpected disruption earlier in the day after Dubai International Airport temporarily suspended several flight operations following a drone incident that reportedly caused a fuel tank to catch fire within the airport premises, leading to delays and cancellations of multiple flights.

“The flight had already completed its first leg and reached Dubai, but the onward journey to New Delhi was delayed due to operational disruptions caused by the drone incident at the airport,” Khuehami said.

The flight was originally scheduled to arrive in New Delhi at 9:55 AM, but due to the temporary suspension of operations at Dubai Airport, the departure was delayed for several hours. The aircraft later received clearance and is now expected to land in New Delhi later this evening.

Khuehami said that around 80 Indian passengers are onboard the flight, the majority of them students from Jammu and Kashmir who were studying at various universities in Iran, along with several pilgrims.

Due to the delay in departure from Dubai, many students missed their connecting flights to Srinagar, which had been scheduled earlier in the day. The Association said it is in touch with the concerned authorities to facilitate their onward travel and ensure necessary assistance once they arrive in Delhi.

The Association further said that more Indian students, along with two additional groups of Kargil pilgrims, are scheduled to depart from Armenia for New Delhi on March 17, while the remaining pilgrims are expected to depart on March 18, as part of the continued efforts to ensure the safe return of all stranded individuals.

Khuehami added that the Association remains in constant touch with the students, the Ministry of External Affairs, and other concerned authorities to monitor the situation and extend all possible assistance until the students safely reach their homes.
