Cold conditions intensify in Kashmir; IMD forecasts spells of wet weather in next few days

Srinagar, Jan 17: Cold conditions tightened its grip in Kashmir with a drop in minimum temperatures as the meteorological department forecast spells of wet weather, especially in the higher reaches of the valley over the next few days.

Srinagar recorded a low of minus 3.2 degrees Celsius on Friday night, down from minus 1.5 degrees Celsius the previous night. Shopian in south Kashmir was the coldest recorded place in the valley, with the mercury settling at a low of minus 5.6 degrees Celsius.

Pahalgam recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius, same as the previous night, while Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district registered a low of minus 4.2 degrees Celsius, down from the previous night’s minus 2.3 degrees Celsius.

Sonamarg in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, which received moderate snowfall on Friday, recorded a low of minus 2.9 degrees Celsius, officials of the meteorological department said.

Qazigund, the gateway town to the valley, saw the mercury settle at minus 3.4 degrees Celsius. Kokernag recorded a low of minus 2 degrees Celsius, and Kupwara recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2.2 degrees Celsius, they added.

The Kashmir Valley is currently in the midst of ‘Chilla-i-Kalan’, the 40-day harshest winter period, during which night temperatures frequently plunge several degrees below the freezing point, and chances of snowfall are the highest.

‘Chilla-i-Kalan’, which began on December 21 last year, will end on January 30, followed by ‘Chilla Khurd’ and ‘Chillai Bachha’.

The Meteorological Department has said back-to-back western disturbances would impact Kashmir, causing wet spells over the next few days.

Light snow at isolated higher reaches is possible on Saturday and Sunday, while light to moderate rain/snow is likely on January 19 and 20, it said.

The MeT office said there is a possibility of light snow at isolated higher reaches on January 21, following which light to moderate rain or snow is likely till January 25. A few districts of the Chenab valley, Pir-Panjal range and south Kashmir districts might get heavy rain or snow from January 23 to 24.

Jammu-Srinagar highway open for two-way traffic amid heavy rush

Srinagar, Jan 17: The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is open for two-way traffic on Saturday; however, heavy congestion was reported at several places along the vital arterial road, causing inconvenience to commuters.

Traffic officials said that despite the highway being operational for both sides, traffic jams were witnessed at multiple stretches due to high vehicle volume and frequent overtaking by motorists. Slow movement of traffic was reported, particularly at narrow and vulnerable points, leading to delays for passengers and goods carriers.

Traffic Police issued an advisory urging drivers to strictly follow lane discipline and avoid overtaking, warning that such practices are a major cause of traffic snarls on the highway. Officials said unnecessary overtaking not only disrupts smooth vehicular flow but also increases the risk of accidents on the mountainous stretch.

They appealed to drivers to maintain safe distances, adhere to traffic instructions, and cooperate with traffic personnel deployed along the route to ensure hassle-free movement. [KNT]

Students returning from Iran say situation far less serious than portrayed on social media

Srinagar, Jan 17: Dozens of students who returned home from Iran have said that the ground situation in the country is normal and far less serious than what is being portrayed on social media platforms, asserting that they neither witnessed unrest nor faced any threat during their stay.

The students, most of whom were pursuing medical and professional courses in Iran, said that while they heard about protests through news and online sources, daily life in the cities where they lived continued without disruption. They, however, said that internet services were not functional and there was no atmosphere of fear on campuses or in surrounding areas.

Several students stated that a large number of their classmates and fellow Indian students preferred to stay back in Iran and did not opt for return, as academic activities were continuing normally. “We only heard about protests but never saw anything with our own eyes,” some of the returned students said, adding that social media narratives appeared exaggerated and misleading.

Parents of the returning students expressed relief over the safe arrival of their children and extended gratitude to the All India Medical Students Association for its coordination and support during the process. They particularly thanked Dr Mohammad Moomin Khan, Vice President of AIMSA, for what they described as tireless efforts to ensure the students’ safe return.

“We are really thankful to AIMSA, especially Dr Mohammad Moomin Khan, who made every possible effort so that our children could return home safely,” parents said.

The students maintained that there was no panic on the ground in Iran and urged people to rely on verified information rather than unconfirmed social media content, which they said often amplifies fear without reflecting reality. [KNT]

Indian man gets 30-month jail in US for illegal export of aviation parts to Russia

Indian man gets 30-month jail in US for illegal export of aviation parts to Russia

New York, Jan 17:  A 58-year-old Indian national was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison in the US for conspiring to illegally export controlled aviation components from Oregon to Russia.

In the judgement pronounced earlier this week, US Attorney for the District of Oregon Scott Bradford said Sanjay Kaushik’s actions were deliberate and profit-driven.

“It was a calculated, profit-driven scheme involving repeated transactions, substantial gains, and coordination with foreign co-conspirators, including sanctioned Russian entities. This defendant sought, on multiple occasions, to undermine safeguards critical to US national security and foreign policy for his own personal gain,” he said.

The court sentenced Kaushik from Delhi to 30 months in federal prison and 36 months of supervised release for conspiring with others to export controlled aviation components and a navigation and flight control system to end users in Russia, in violation of the Export Control Reform Act.

“Those who scheme to circumvent US export control laws – especially when it involves technologies with military applications – will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Assistant Attorney General for National Security John Eisenberg said.

“The security of the United States demands that perpetrators of deceitful schemes like this one are held accountable for their actions,” he said.

According to court documents, beginning in early September 2023, Kaushik conspired with others to unlawfully obtain aerospace goods and technology from the US for entities in Russia.

The goods were purchased under the pretext that they were meant for Kaushik and his Indian company, when in fact they were destined for Russian end users, the Justice Department said in a statement on Friday.

Kaushik and his co-conspirators purchased an Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS), a device that provides navigation and flight control data for aircraft, from an Oregon-based supplier.

Components such as the AHRS require a licence from the Department of Commerce to be exported to certain countries, including Russia.

To obtain the licence, Kaushik and his co-conspirators falsely claimed that Kaushik’s Indian company was the end purchaser and that the component would be used in a civilian helicopter.

Kaushik and his co-conspirators obtained the AHRS, which was ultimately detained before it could be exported.

Kaushik was arrested in Miami in October 2024, pursuant to a criminal complaint and arrest warrant and has remained in custody since then.

A month later, a federal grand jury in Portland indicted him on charges of conspiracy, attempted illegal export, and making false statements.

In October last year, Kaushik pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to sell export-controlled aviation components with dual civilian and military applications to end users in Russia.

Flights delayed in Delhi amid dense fog, AQI in ‘very poor’ category

New Delhi, Jan 17: As cold wave conditions continued to prevail in the national capital, dense fog enveloped large parts of Delhi on Saturday morning, leading to reduced visibility and delays in several flights at Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.

Passengers are advised to check flight statuses with their respective airlines before heading to the airport, as foggy conditions are likely to impact operations intermittently.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported a slight improvement in minimum temperature, which stood at 7 degrees Celsius on Saturday morning, compared to 4 degrees Celsius recorded on Friday. Despite the marginal rise in temperature, visibility remained low during the early hours, affecting road, rail and air traffic movement across the city.

Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality continued to remain a major concern. As per data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the Air Quality Index (AQI) in the national capital stood at 368 at around 7 am on Saturday, placing it in the “very poor” category.

Earlier, on Tuesday, in view of deteriorating air quality in Delhi, the Sub-Committee on the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in NCR and Adjoining Areas convened a meeting.

During the meeting, the Sub-Committee reviewed the prevailing air quality scenario in the region, along with forecasts for weather and meteorological conditions and the Air Quality Index.

According to an official release, the Sub-Committee observed that the AQI in Delhi has shown an increasing trend, and forecasts by IMD and IITM indicate that air quality is likely to deteriorate further and may enter the ‘severe’ category in the coming days due to unfavourable meteorological conditions and slow, variable wind speeds.

“In view of the prevailing air quality trend, and with a view to preventing further deterioration of air quality in the region, the Sub-Committee has decided to invoke all actions envisaged under Stage-III of the extant Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) – ‘Severe’ Air Quality (AQI range: 401-450) – with immediate effect across the entire NCR, as a proactive measure,” the release said.

This is in addition to the actions under Stages I & II of the extant GRAP already in force in NCR. Various agencies responsible for implementing measures under GRAP, including the Pollution Control Boards (PCBs) of NCR and DPCC, have also been directed to ensure strict implementation of actions under Stage-III of the extant GRAP, in addition to actions under Stages I & II of GRAP, during this period.

A nine-point action plan as per Stage-III of the extant GRAP is applicable with immediate effect, in the entire NCR. The nine-point action plan includes steps to be implemented/ ensured by different agencies, including the Pollution Control Boards of NCR and DPCC.

Trump thanks Iran for not following through on executions of political prisoners

Trump thanks Iran for not following through on executions of political prisoners

Washington, Jan 16: President Donald Trump took the unusual step on Friday of thanking the Iranian government for not following through on executions of what he said was meant to be hundreds of political prisoners.

“Iran cancelled the hanging of over 800 people,” Trump told reporters while leaving the White House to spend the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.

He added “and I greatly respect the fact that they cancelled.”

The Republican president also suggested on his social media site that more than 800 people had been set to be executed in Iran, but he said they now won’t be.

“Thank you!” Trump posted.

Those sentiments come after Trump spent days suggesting that the US might strike Iran militarily if its government triggered mass killings during widespread protests that swept that country but now have quieted.

The death toll from those demonstrations continues to rise, activists say. Still, Trump seemed to hint that the prospects for US military action were fading since Iran had held off on the executions.

The president’s rosy assessment did not appear to match the more complicated situation in Iran. Still, his pronouncements seemed to be more evidence of him backing away from his early comments that suggested a US attack on that country might be imminent.

Trump had previously posted of Iran and the protesters there, “Help is on the way.” But asked if that was still the case on Friday, he replied: “Well, we’re going to see.”

Questioned specifically if Arab and Israeli officials might have convinced him to back down on seeming suggestions that he would strike Iran, Trump said, “Nobody convinced me. I convinced myself.”

“You had yesterday scheduled over 800 hangings. They didn’t hang anyone,” he said. “They cancelled the hangings. That had a big impact.”

Trump did not clarify who he was speaking to in Iran to confirm the state of planned executions. That’s important since, even as he was offering Iran kind words, harsh repression that has left several thousand people dead appeared to have successfully stifled demonstrations across the country.

Protests that began Dec. 28 over an ailing economy and morphed into protests directly challenging the country’s theocracy seem to have stopped. There have been no signs of protests for days in Tehran, where shopping and street life have returned to outward normality, though a week-old internet blackout continued.

Authorities have not reported any unrest elsewhere in the country.

Still, the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency on Friday put the death toll from demonstrations at 2,797, and that number continues to rise.

Meanwhile, Iran’s exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi urged the US to make good on its perhaps now dwindling pledge to intervene, calling Trump “a man of his word.”
