India projected to grow at 6.6%, resilient consumption, public investment to offset US tariffs impact: UN

India projected to grow at 6.6%, resilient consumption, public investment to offset US tariffs impact: UN

United Nations, Jan 09: India is projected to grow at 6.6 per cent in 2026, registering an “exceptionally high growth in a challenging global environment”, with resilient private consumption and strong public investment largely offsetting the impact of high US tariffs, the United Nations has said.

The World Economic Situation and Prospects 2026 report released on Thursday by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs said that economic growth in India is projected to “moderate” from an estimated 7.4 per cent in 2025 to 6.6 per cent this year. India will remain the world’s fastest major economy, it said.

“Resilient private consumption, strong public investment, recent tax reforms, and lower interest rates are expected to support near-term growth. However, higher US tariffs could weigh on export performance in 2026 if current rates persist, as the US market accounts for about 18 per cent of total exports from India,” the report said.

It added that while tariffs may adversely affect some product categories, key exports such as electronics and smartphones are expected to remain exempt.

“Moreover, strong demand from other major markets, including Europe and the Middle East, is projected to partially offset the impact,” it said, adding that on the supply side, continued expansion in manufacturing and services sectors will remain a key driver of growth throughout the forecast period.

The report stressed that India’s growth will be supported by resilient consumption and strong public investment, which “should largely offset the adverse impact of higher US tariffs”.

“Recent tax reforms and monetary easing should provide additional near-term support,” it added.

Ingo Pitterle, Senior Economist and Officer-in-Charge, Global Economic Monitoring Branch, Economic Analysis and Policy Division, UN DESA, told reporters at a briefing here that South Asia will remain the world’s fastest growing region expanding by 5.6 per cent and much of this growth “comes from India where robust domestic demand, easing inflation supported by a strong harvest and continued policy support are driving growth”.

On the macroeconomic situation in India, Pitterle said the agency has “significantly upgraded” its 2025 and 2026 GDP forecast for the country, reflecting an “exceptional combination of factors which have all worked in the direction of stronger growth in India, of a very dynamic economy”.

He pointed to the strong consumer demand, public investment and falling inflation in India, partly due to a very abundant harvest.

The Reserve Bank of India could also lower interest rates and provide a monetary impulse.

“So we had monetary impulse, we had a positive fiscal impulse to investment and we had positive impact on GDP from the agricultural sector on top of all the other strong growth drivers India was having. That’s why we’re seeing exceptionally high growth even in a context of a relatively challenging global environment,” Pitterle said.

Director, Economic Analysis and Policy Division, UN DESA Shantanu Mukherjee added that there has been diversification of India’s export markets to the European Union and the Middle East.

Reiterating that “domestic drivers of growth have been exceptionally strong” in India, Mukherjee said that one of the strongest exports from India at this point in time is services exports.

“This has remained resilient even if merchandise exports have been affected by tariffs. Perhaps one way for India to continue to take advantage” as AI is involved, is to “further strengthen its services exports and rely on its skilled manpower to develop some of the applications that will take AI into a productivity boosting factor beyond where it is right now”.

In India, consumer price inflation fell more than expected, averaging three per cent in the first nine months of the year amid favourable base effects and lower food prices. Inflation is forecast at 4.1 per cent, close to the central bank’s midpoint target.

India also recorded strong growth in gross fixed capital formation, led by higher public spending on physical and digital infrastructure, defence and renewable energy.

In India, employment indicators remained broadly stable in 2025. The unemployment rate stood at 5.2 per cent in October 2025, compared with 4.9 per cent in 2024, while the labour force participation rate edged up in both rural and urban areas during the second half of the year.

The Indian rupee stabilised against the US dollar in the first half of the year, supported by broad dollar weakness. However, in the second half, the Indian rupee edged lower following stronger-than-expected growth in the US and ongoing trade negotiations.

Portfolio outflows and higher US tariffs added to depreciation pressures on the Indian rupee.

Nonetheless, robust economic performance in India is expected to provide support for the country’s currency in the near term, it said.

The report highlighted that developments in India and Brazil illustrate how industrial policies that address structural supply constraints can mitigate inflationary pressures.

In India, programmes to expand the domestic production of edible oils and pulses, modernise fertilizer and storage infrastructure, and improve logistics — even if conceived mainly to boost rural incomes and food security — have reduced dependence on imports and exposure to global shocks.

The report said that global economic growth, estimated at 2.8 per cent for 2025, is forecast to decline slightly to 2.7 per cent in 2026 before edging up to 2.9 per cent in 2027—remaining well below the pre-pandemic (2010–2019) average of 3.2 per cent.

Growth in Europe, Japan, and the US is projected to hold broadly steady but proceed at a moderate pace, with monetary or fiscal support continuing to underpin demand.

Several large developing economies, including China, India and Indonesia, are expected to continue experiencing solid growth driven by resilient domestic demand or targeted policy measures.

It noted that the value of countries’ merchandise exports to the US also changed. A sharp decline in shipments from China — particularly of electronic goods such as laptops and smartphones — was offset by increased imports from Vietnam and other Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) economies.

“India has also strengthened its position within global electronics supply chains,” it said.

Kathua encounter enters day 2; cop injured

Jammu, Jan 8: An anti-terror operation is underway in the Kathua district, where an encounter that erupted on Wednesday entered its second day, with security forces resuming the search operation on Thursday morning after a nightlong cordon, officials said.

Security forces intensified search operations in and around the Kamadh Nallah area and the Dhanu Parole-Kamadh Nallah belt, following an exchange of gunfire between terrorists and Special Operations Group (SoG) personnel at Kahog village in Billawar on Wednesday evening.

The gunfight broke out after security forces launched a search operation based on specific intelligence inputs about the presence of two to three terrorists hiding in the forest area, officials said.

During the initial encounter on Wednesday, heavy firing was reported, which lasted for over an hour, in which a security personnel sustained a minor bullet injury after a bullet hit his leg.

He was hospitalised, officials said.

Officials said that soon after the exchange, additional reinforcements were rushed to the area to strengthen the cordon and prevent the terrorists from escaping.

The operation was further expanded with the deployment of specialised teams of the Army along with teams of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to assist in tracking down the terrorists.

Additional forces have also been called in, and aerial surveillance has been pressed into service to pin down the terrorists hiding in dense forest areas, officials said.

Although no fresh exchange of fire has been reported since Thursday morning, security agencies suspect that two to three terrorists may still be hiding in or near the encounter site.

There are also reports of movement of three groups of infiltrating terrorists in the region, officials said.

Meanwhile, a well-constructed terrorist hideout was busted on Thursday near the Kamadh Nallah area, from where utensils, food items, clothes, and other basic incriminating material were recovered, officials said.

Confirming the operation, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jammu Zone, Bhim Sen Tuti, in a post on microblogging site X said, “Despite darkness, thick vegetation and treacherous terrain, the SOG is relentlessly engaging the terrorists. Teams of the CRPF are also participating in the joint operation.”

In another post on X, he said: “The SOG has engaged the terrorists in the forest area of Kamadh nallah, Kathua.”

Search operations are continuing, and security forces remain on high alert to neutralise any remaining threats.

The Army, Border Security Force (BSF), Police, and CRPF are continuously carrying out joint search operations in the area, while identification of border dwellers and intensified patrolling along the International Border (IB) in Kathua and Samba districts and adjoining areas of Punjab have been underway for the past one month, officials said.

A multi-tier security grid comprising the BSF, Border Police, and Village Defence Guards (VDGs) has been put on alert ahead of Republic Day on January 26, officials said.

Kathua has witnessed several encounters over the last two years, resulting in the killing of 16 people, including 11 security personnel and five terrorists.

While seven security personnel and two terrorists were killed in 2024 after terror activities revived in the district, seven persons, including four security personnel and three terrorists, were killed in 2023.

In addition, four civilians died under mysterious circumstances, with locals suspecting terror involvement.

J&K Health Minister questions NMC move

J&K Health Minister questions NMC move

Jammu, Jan 8: J&K Minister for Health and Medical Education (HME) Sakina Itoo Thursday questioned the move of National Medical Commission (NMC) to “withdraw its Letter of Permission granted to SMVDIME after finding grave irregularities, which it (NMC) could not see earlier while granting its approval.”

“I could not understand the move of MCI (NMC). If they found some irregularities during their recent inspection of the medical college (SMVDIME), why did they not discover those shortcomings when they had granted the medical college (the Letter of Permission)?,” she threw a prickly poser, while responding to media queries, on the sidelines of a government function in Jammu.

Further criticising the NMC, Itoo said, “Even now they (NMC) could find those shortcomings only when an individual or a particular party criticised you as to why the Muslim students were given admission there. On that basis, the college was shut and its Letter of Permission withdrawn. Nothing could be more unfortunate than this.”

Regarding the affected students, she informed, “The Chief Minister had already given directions to relocate the disturbed children, who were mentally harassed, to the J&K Government Medical Colleges at their doorsteps. The Health Department is already working on it. God willing, as early as possible, it will be accomplished. I’ve given directions to the Secretary to expedite the process and put up a proposal at the earliest possible to alleviate the deep stress, anxiety, being suffered by those students for the past three or four months.”

While echoing the Chief Minister in criticising Sangharsh Samiti and others, Itoo stated it was unfortunate that they got a medical college, which was made available to J&K, shut down.

“Any part of Jammu and Kashmir with great difficulty gets a medical college, where the children, after qualifying NEET, secure admissions and complete their medical studies. But they got it shut down. It should not have happened. Rather, it should have been further strengthened so that J&K could get more doctors to serve its people,” she said.

“But if for a political game, this all has been done, in the name of religion, this is totally wrong,” Itoo opined, adding, “As regards those children who had secured admission there (in SMVDIME) – they were mentally depressed.  As they were being targetted for long despite the fact they had secured admission after qualifying NEET and none had obliged them.”

The Minister for Health asserted that the medical students in J&K, like elsewhere, were also administered the Hippocratic Oath before they assumed their jobs as doctors.

“As doctors, they don’t treat their patients on the basis of their religion. They serve humanity. A doctor has no religion. Same children, after becoming doctors, would treat those also who opposed their admission. I believe that religion should not be brought into education. For politics, there may be several tools but using religion in the sphere of education is not correct,” Itoo asserted.

She said that her party National Conference never allowed it as it always believed in the philosophy propounded by the Sher-e-Kashmir, which reflected in his (Sheikh Abdullah’s) slogan delineating “…Hindu-Muslim-Sikh Ittehad” and would continue to do so.
