Iran launches new attacks at Gulf Arab countries as it keeps up pressure on Middle East

Iran launches new attacks at Gulf Arab countries as it keeps up pressure on Middle East

Dubai, Mar 10: Iran launched new attacks on Tuesday at Gulf Arab countries as it kept up pressure on the Middle East in a war that has sent oil prices surging and stunned global economies. Five pro-Iranian militiamen were killed in an airstrike in northern Iraq.

Incoming missile sirens sounded early in the morning in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, and in Bahrain, while Saudi Arabia said it had destroyed two drones over its oil-rich eastern region, and Kuwait’s National Guard said it had shot down six drones.

In addition to firing missiles and drones at Israel and at American bases in the region, Iran has also been targeting energy infrastructure, which, combined with its stranglehold on the Strait of Hormuz, has sent oil prices soaring.

Brent crude, the international standard, spiked to nearly USD 120 on Monday before falling back, but was still at around USD 90 a barrel on Tuesday, nearly 24 per cent higher than when the war started on Feb. 28.

US President Donald Trump, who has previously said that the war could last for a month or longer, on Tuesday sought to downplay growing fears that it could be a long-term regional conflict, saying it was “going to be a short-term excursion.”

Trump sends contradictory messages, and Tehran says it’s prepared for a long war

The war has choked off major supplies of oil and gas to world markets and sent fuel prices rising across the US. The fighting has also led foreigners to flee from business hubs and prompted millions to seek shelter as bombs hit military bases, government buildings, oil and water installations, hotels and at least one school.

Iran has effectively stopped tankers from using the Strait of Hormuz, the shipping lane between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman — the gateway to the Indian Ocean — through which 20 per cent of the world’s oil is carried. Attacks on merchant ships near the strait have killed at least seven sailors, according to the International Maritime Organisation.

In a post on social media on Tuesday, Trump seemed not to acknowledge that, saying that “If Iran does anything that stops the flow of Oil within the Strait of Hormuz, they will be hit by the United States of America TWENTY TIMES HARDER than they have been hit thus far.”

In an apparent response to Trump’s remarks published in Iranian state media, a spokesperson for the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, Ali Mohammad Naini, said: “Iran will determine when the war ends.”

Kamal Kharazi, foreign policy adviser to the office of the supreme leader, told CNN on Monday that Iran is prepared for a long war. He said he sees no “room for diplomacy anymore” unless economic pressure prompts other countries to intervene and stop the “aggression of Americans and Israelis against Iran.”

Airstrike on Iran-linked militia in Iraq kills 5

As the conflict has spread across the region, Israel has launched multiple attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon, with the Iranian-backed Lebanese militant group responding and firing missiles into Israel.

Pro-Iran militias in Iraq have also launched attacks on US bases in the country since the beginning of the conflict.

Early Tuesday, one of those militias, the 40th Brigade of the Popular Mobilisation Forces in the city of Kirkuk, was hit with an airstrike that killed at least five militiamen and wounded four others, according to officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to talk to reporters.

It was not immediately clear who was behind the strikes.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military said Tuesday it completed a series of strikes targeting Hezbollah’s financial arm, al-Qard Al-Hasan. Israel, which says Hezbollah uses al-Qard al-Hasan to finance its military activities, also targeted several of the group’s branches in southern and eastern Lebanon last week.

Israel’s military also reiterated a call for all residents of southern Lebanon to evacuate their homes, saying it planned to “operate forcefully” there against Hezbollah.

Since the war began, at least 1,230 people have been killed in Iran, at least 397 in Lebanon and 11 in Israel, according to officials.

A total of seven US service members have been killed.

Financial markets, which swung wildly in recent days, opened on Tuesday in Asia with early gains, building on late optimism in the US.

As it faced headwinds from the conflict, Saudi Arabia’s oil giant Aramco reported 2025 profits of USD 104 billion, down from USD 110 billion in 2024.

Aramco, formally known as the Saudi Arabian Oil Co., said its 2025 revenues were USD 445 billion, down from USD 480 billion in 2024.

Trump warns Iran over Hormuz as war enters eleventh day, oil prices ease

New Delhi, Mar 10: The war involving the United States, Israel and Iran entered its eleventh day on Tuesday with no immediate end in sight, even as global oil prices fell in early Asian trading after surging to as high as $115 a barrel on Monday.

The drop followed comments by US President Donald Trump suggesting the conflict could end “pretty quickly,” though he added that Washington had not yet “won enough.” Trump also issued a fresh warning to Tehran against disrupting shipping in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world’s oil supply passes.

“If Iran does anything that stops the flow of oil within the Strait of Hormuz, they will be hit by the United States of America twenty times harder than they have been hit thus far,” Trump said in an online statement.

The US president warned that Washington could strike “easily destroyable targets” in Iran that would make it “virtually impossible” for the country to rebuild. “Death, fire and fury will reign upon them — but I hope and pray that it does not happen,” he added.

The conflict, which began on Feb 28, has expanded across the West Asia or Middle East and disrupted maritime traffic in the Gulf, pushing oil prices sharply higher in recent days.

Speaking to Republican lawmakers in Florida, Trump said the United States had achieved several military successes but intended to intensify its operations. “We’ve already won in many ways, but we haven’t won enough,” he said, describing the conflict as “an excursion” from his domestic policy agenda but necessary because he believed Iran was preparing attacks against the United States and Israel, reports the BBC.

Trump acknowledged the economic and social impact of the war in US, including falling stock markets, but predicted the markets would recover. He also said casualties among US personnel were unavoidable. The US military confirmed that a seventh service member had been killed since the conflict began. Across the West Asia, casualties have also been reported in Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon as Israeli forces continued air strikes inside Iran.

Meanwhile, European leaders warned of wider economic fallout, reports the BBC. The UK’s chancellor said inflation could rise as London signalled support for releasing strategic oil reserves by members of the Group of Seven to help stabilise energy markets.

French President Emmanuel Macron visited Cyprus, which has seen several strikes since the war began, while Britain and other European countries announced plans to deploy additional military assets to Europe’s southern flank. British Defence Secretary John Healey said a drone that struck a British military base in Cyprus last week was believed to have been launched from the region, underscoring fears that the conflict could continue to widen.

In a humanitarian development, several players from Iran women’s national football team currently in Australia for the Asian Cup have been granted humanitarian visas to remain in the country following their elimination from the tournament, reports the BBC.

IT Deptt finds Rs 408 Cr sales suppression in restaurants across country

IT Deptt finds Rs 408 Cr sales suppression in restaurants across country

New Delhi, Mar 9: The Income Tax Department has uncovered large-scale suppression of sales in restaurants across the country after conducting a nationwide verification exercise in the Food and Beverage (F&B) sector.

According to officials, the department carried out an investigation in November 2025 to analyse patterns of tax evasion among restaurants. During the exercise, it was found that several establishments were allegedly deleting bulk bills and making other modifications in their records to suppress their actual sales.

Using AI-enabled analytical tools, the department examined transactional data of nearly 1.77 lakh restaurants in the F&B sector. The data was compared with the turnover declared by these restaurants in their Income Tax Returns. The analysis reportedly revealed widespread under-reporting of income.

Officials said that in several cases, the sales recorded in transaction data did not fully match the figures shown in financial accounts or tax filings, indicating that certain transactions had been excluded from the reported sales.

Following the findings, the Income Tax Department conducted a nationwide survey on March 8, 2026, covering 62 restaurants across 46 cities in 22 states. Preliminary results from the exercise revealed suppression of sales amounting to around ₹408 crore. Investigations in the matter are currently underway.

The department said it continues to emphasise voluntary compliance and a trust-based approach. As part of this effort, it has launched the SAKSHAM NUDGE campaign to guide and advise taxpayers to correct discrepancies in their filings.

Officials said emails and messages will be sent to around 63,000 identified restaurants in the first phase, asking them to update their returns under Section 139(8A) of the Income Tax Act before March 31, 2026.
