NYC Mayor speaks with Trump

New York, Jan 4: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has said he spoke with President Donald Trump “directly” to register his opposition to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife by the US military, as he termed the unilateral attack on a sovereign nation an “act of war”.

Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores have been indicted in the Southern District of New York and are being brought to the city to face the charges against them. Responding to a question on the situation in Venezuela and Maduro’s capture at a press conference, Mamdani said he “called the president and spoke with him directly to register my opposition to this act”.

“I registered my opposition. I made it clear and we left it at that,” Mamdani said, giving no details of what Trump’s response to him was. The extraordinary international development has come just two days after Mamdani was sworn-in as New York City Mayor. Mamdani was briefed Saturday morning by his administration officials, including his chief of staff and the police commissioner, on the US military capture of the Venezuelan president and his wife, as well as their planned imprisonment in federal custody here in New York City. Mamdani said the “blatant pursuit of regime change” impacts New Yorkers, including Venezuelans who live in the city. “Unilaterally attacking a sovereign nation is an act of war and a violation of federal and international law,” the newly sworn-in mayor said in a statement. “This blatant pursuit of regime change doesn’t just affect those abroad, it directly impacts New Yorkers, including tens of thousands of Venezuelans who call this city home. My focus is their safety and the safety of every New Yorker, and my administration will continue to monitor the situation and issue relevant guidance,” Mamdani said.

US Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in a post on X that Maduro and Flores have been indicted in the Southern District of New York. Maduro has been charged with narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy, possession of machine guns and destructive devices and conspiracy to possess machine guns and destructive devices against the US.

“They will soon face the full wrath of American justice on American soil in American courts,” Bondi said, as she thanked Trump for “having the courage to demand accountability on behalf of the American People, and a huge thank you to our brave military who conducted the incredible and highly successful mission to capture these two alleged international narco traffickers”. Meanwhile, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi, a senior member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, said while Maduro is an “illegitimate dictator” who has inflicted immense suffering on the Venezuelan people, that reality does not give any president a blank check to use military force without Congress authorisation. “By acting without congressional authorisation and publicly asserting US control over another sovereign nation, President Trump is abusing presidential power and undermining the Constitution’s separation of powers,” Krishnamoorthi said. He said the Trump Administration must immediately account for the safety of US personnel, disclose whether there were any casualties and fully and immediately brief Congress. “The president has now stated that the United States will run Venezuela, committing the country to open-ended responsibility. Neither the American people nor Congress approved that course. This use of force and claimed control erode the rule of law, embolden Moscow and Beijing to push boundaries elsewhere, weaken America’s credibility, and ultimately make Americans less safe,” Krishnamoorthi said.

Garbage dumping site on Wular lake’s banks set to be relocated

Garbage dumping site on Wular lake’s banks set to be relocated

Bandipora, Jan 4: After a prolonged delay, the garbage dumping site on Wular lake’s banks in north Kashmir’s Bandipora is finally set to move to a new location where tonnes of waste will be dealt with scientifically.

Garbage disposal at the Zalwan site, on lake banks, has been taking place since 1962 and with the increase in population, it now receives tonnes of waste daily. At present, the Municipal Council collects garbage from 17 wards of the town area and dumps it at the site with minimal post-dumping treatment. Although the site had been slightly moved in 2020 and later fenced, it has still continued contributing to irreparable damage to the ecology of the lake and its nearby areas.  It has also consumed a nearby stream, suffocating it under garbage, and is now encroaching upon farmers’ paddy fields.  Furthermore, the site has become an eyesore for the local population and acts as a spoilsport for children playing in the nearby ground.

Even though the administration had promised over the years to shift the site, it had failed miserably thus far, even inviting the wrath of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which had also raised objections to installing a segregation plant worth Rs 6 crore at the site. On Monday, officials informed Greater Kashmir that they have achieved a breakthrough in shifting the site. The project has received approval and is out for tendering, worth Rs 1.98 crore.

When asked if this facility too would impact Wular Lake, officials assured that the garbage will be treated scientifically to minimise environmental impact. The new location, spanning 10 kanals, will treat garbage using scientific waste management methods, according to officials. The facility will include a plastic recycler for plastic waste and waste composting machines to treat dry and wet waste separately. It will also house an Animal Birth Control (ABC) facility to keep a check on the stray dog population. Officials also informed that bioremediation of biological waste will be conducted at the Wular bank to clear it out. “The scientific intervention will help us get rid of all the garbage which has accumulated there over the years,” Bandipora Municipal Council Executive Engineer Aijaz Ahmad told Greater Kashmir.

The 30 kanals of land owned by the department at the present site will be utilised to create a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) worth Rs 20 crore, for which officials said no permission was required. However, the STP is intended to treat domestic sewage reaching the facility via the town’s drainage network, for which the UEED will formulate a new DPR in consultation with the ULB department.

“Till the time the project is completed, which seems to take longer, the STP will treat water from Gader Kaul,” the officer said. The officials predicted the dumping site will move in the next fiscal or by ending 2026.

India’s sports model is now athlete-centric: PM Modi

India’s sports model is now athlete-centric: PM Modi

New Delhi, Jan 4: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that India’s sports ecosystem has become “athlete-centric”, driven by reforms focused on talent identification, scientific training, and transparent selection, as he inaugurated the 72nd National Volleyball Tournament in Varanasi via video conferencing, being held from January 4 to 11, features over 1,000 players competing in 58 teams representing states and institutions from across the country.

Addressing players, officials and spectators, the Prime Minister said the shift in approach over the past decade reflects a broader change in both government and societal attitudes towards sports.

He noted that earlier uncertainty over careers had discouraged many young people from taking up sports professionally, but sustained reforms and increased investment have helped rebuild confidence among athletes.

Welcoming teams from 28 states, PM Modi said the national championship presented a vivid example of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat”, with players who had reached the tournament after years of hard work now set to compete on the courts of Varanasi.

Extending his best wishes, he said the city’s sports-loving public would ensure an enthusiastic atmosphere throughout the event.

Describing Varanasi as a city with a deep sporting tradition, the Prime Minister said disciplines such as wrestling, boxing, kabaddi and boat racing have long flourished here.

He noted that institutions including Banaras Hindu University, UP College and Kashi Vidyapeeth have produced several state and national-level players, adding that the city has historically welcomed those pursuing knowledge, art, and excellence.

Highlighting the nature of volleyball, PM Modi said the sport symbolises balance, cooperation and the spirit of “Team First.”

Drawing a parallel with India’s development journey, he said no victory, on the court or in nation-building, is achieved alone, but depends on coordination, trust and every individual fulfilling their responsibility.

Referring to India’s improving performance across multiple sporting disciplines, the Prime Minister said the country’s rising global confidence is visible not only in its economy but also on the sports field.

He expressed pride in seeing young and Gen-Z athletes hoisting the tricolour at international events.

PM Modi said Varanasi has benefited from improved sports infrastructure, with modern facilities and upgraded venues such as the Sigra Stadium, which is hosting the tournament.

Hosting national and international events, he said, is helping position the city as a major destination for large platforms, alongside cultural and diplomatic gatherings held here in recent years.

Encouraging players to make the most of both the competition and the city’s heritage, PM Modi wished all participants success, expressing hope that every spike and block from Varanasi would contribute to India’s sporting aspirations.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and other dignitaries were present at the inauguration.

Bank employees’ unions threaten to go on nationwide strike on Jan 27

Bank employees’ unions threaten to go on nationwide strike on Jan 27

New Delhi, Jan 4: Bank employees’ unions under the aegis of the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) have threatened to go on a nationwide strike on January 27, demanding implementation of a 5-day week.

If the strike materialises, it would have a significant impact primarily on the operations of public sector banks for three days in a row, as January 25 and 26 are holidays.

At present, bank employees get off on the second and fourth Saturday of each month, apart from Sundays.

Declaring the remaining two Saturdays as holidays was agreed between the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and UFBU during the wage revision settlement in March, 2024.

“It is unfortunate that the government is not responding to our genuine demand. There would be no loss of man-hours because we have agreed to an extra 40 minutes working per day from Monday to Friday,” UFBU said in a statement.

Already, RBI, LIC, GIC, etc., are working for 5 days a week, it said, adding that the foreign exchange market, money market, stock exchanges, etc., are not working on Saturdays. Also, the central and state government offices do not work on Saturdays.

Hence, it said, there is no reason why banks cannot introduce a 5-day week.

It has been decided to give the call for an all India strike in all the banks on January 27, 2026, it added.

UFBU is an umbrella organisation of nine major bank unions in India, representing employees and officers across public sector banks and some old generation private banks.

The statement further said the union’s social media campaign #5DayBankingNow has got 18,80,027 impressions and about 2,85,200 posts on X.

Kishtwar, Jan 04: Months after India put the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) in abeyance, Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Sunday said that no objection of Pakistan will be entertained vis-à-vis ongoing work on power projects in the Indus and Chenab basins in Jammu and Kashmir.

Khattar, according to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), visited the Salal Hydroelectric Project and also conducted an aerial survey of the Sawalkot project today.

While talking to the reporters Khattar said, “No objections from Pakistan will be entertained.”

Replying to a query about these projects getting fast tracked after ‘Operation Sindoor,’ and what message he would like to give Pakistan, Khattar said, “Prime Minister Modi has given a clear message to Pakistan by keeping the Indus Water Treaty has been kept in abeyance. No objection of Pakistan will be entertained. Water of Chenab and Indus will be used for benefit of our own people.”

Asserting strict vigilance he said that no person with an unlawful background will be engaged in the ongoing hydel power projects in Kishtwar.

Asked would the government act against the family members of the active terrorists working in these projects or the ones who have bagged contracts, Khattar said, “Employment will be provided only to verified and law-abiding workers. Good people should get work. Those with unlawful backgrounds will not be engaged. Any information regarding workers will be verified through institutions. No adverse inputs have been received so far.”

On demands for probes into certain complaints, the Union Minister said routine issues would be addressed at the local level, while any serious matter would be examined as per procedure.

The Union Minister said, “Today I have come to Jammu and Kashmir for various projects. I visited the Salal Project and also conducted an aerial survey of Sawalkot (hydroelectric project). All our NHPC projects are underway. There were many challenges in this. The work has officially started today. By completing it on time, NHPC will generate 800 megawatts of electricity, which will make a significant contribution to the country’s power generation capacity.”

Referring to the challenges Khattar said, “While completing the 800-MW Sawalkot project there were many difficult situations, but the work has now officially started. The project will make a major contribution to the country’s power grid.”

The Union Minister said he reviewed multiple development works during his visit, including canal projects and works at Kowl Fort, and later inspected the final project site in Kishtwar.

India voices deep concern over US military action on Venezuela; calls for peaceful resolution of issues

India voices deep concern over US military action on Venezuela; calls for peaceful resolution of issues

New Delhi, Jan 04: India on Sunday voiced “deep concern” over the US’ capture of Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro and his wife in a military operation and called for a peaceful resolution of the issues to ensure stability in the region.

In its first reaction to the unprecedented American action in Venezuelan capital Caracas early on Saturday, New Delhi also reaffirmed its support for the well-being of the people of the oil-rich South American country and said it is closely monitoring the unfolding developments.

The United States brought Maduro and his wife, Lady Cilia Flores, to New York to face drug trafficking-related charges. Venezuela, denouncing the US action, has announced a state of national emergency.

“Recent developments in Venezuela are a matter of deep concern. We are closely monitoring the evolving situation,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

“India reaffirms its support to the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela,” it added.

New Delhi also called upon “all concerned to address issues peacefully through dialogue, ensuring peace and stability of the region”.

The US carried out the military assault on Caracas after consistently accusing Maduro of being involved in drug trafficking.

The Venezuelan leader had stridently denied the charges.

Most of the Latin American countries as well as several leading powers, including Russia, Brazil and China, criticised the US for the military operation in Caracas.

In its brief statement, the MEA said the Indian embassy in Caracas has been in touch with members of the Indian community and will continue to provide all possible assistance to them.

On Saturday night, India advised its nationals to avoid all non-essential travel to Venezuela and urged all those who are in that country to exercise extreme caution.

“In view of recent developments in Venezuela, Indian nationals are strongly advised to avoid all non-essential travel to Venezuela,” the MEA said.

“All Indians who are in Venezuela for any reason are advised to exercise extreme caution, restrict their movements, and remain in contact with the Embassy of India in Caracas,” it said.

There are around 50 NRIs (non-resident Indians) and 30 PIOs (persons of Indian origin) in Venezuela, according to the embassy in Caracas.

After Maduro and his wife were flown out of Caracas, US President Donald Trump told a news conference that his country will run Venezuela until a transition of power can take place.

“We are going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition,” Trump said.

The US president also said the “extremely successful” operation should serve as a warning to anyone who would threaten American sovereignty or endanger American lives.

The US captured Maduro after carrying out a months-long military campaign targeting Venezuela’s oil tankers and attacks on boats that Washington alleged were part of a drug cartel.

In his reaction, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said the US attacks on Venezuela and the capture of Maduro amounted to a “flagrant violation of international law”.

“Attacking countries, in flagrant violation of international law, is the first step toward a world of violence, chaos, and instability, where the law of the strongest prevails over multilateralism,” he said.

China asked the US to release Maduro and his wife, and underlined the need to resolve issues through dialogue.

“Such hegemonic acts of the US seriously violate international law and Venezuela’s sovereignty, and threaten peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean region,” the Chinese foreign ministry said.

Russia “strongly” urged the US to release the Venezuelan president.

Venezuela’s Supreme Court has asked Vice-President Delcy Rodriguez to take charge of the country as the interim president.

Rodriguez visited New Delhi in February last year to participate in the India Energy Week.

India and Venezuela share a history of warm relations. A major thrust to the bilateral relationship was imparted by former president Hugo Chavez’s State Visit to India in March 2005.

The two countries have robust cooperation in the energy sector.

India’s ONGC Videsh Limited (OVL) has a joint venture with Corporacion Venezolana del Petroleo (CVP). The joint venture is known as “PetroleraIndovenezolana SA” for the production and exploration of oil in the San Cristobal field, in which the OVL has a 40-per cent stake.

The OVL’s investment in the project is approximately USD 200 million, according to the Indian embassy.

Over 1.59 lakh registrations recorded under Mission YUVA in J-K

Over 1.59 lakh registrations recorded under Mission YUVA in J-K

Jammu, Jan 4: More than 1.59 lakh registrations were recorded under Mission YUVA in the past six months with 44,857 proposals approved and loans worth Rs 756.28 crore sanctioned in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Sunday.

On June 28 last year, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah launched the much-anticipated Mission YUVA (Yuva Udyami Vikas Abhiyan), a visionary initiative to foster entrepreneurship in J&K by creating 1.37 lakh enterprises and 4.25 lakh jobs in five years.

“The mission has recorded 1,59,327 registrations, with 65,353 applications submitted so far. Through a structured, multi-tier process, 44,857 proposals were approved, 13,324 cases sanctioned by banks, and 10,329 entrepreneurs have already received disbursements.

“Banks have sanctioned loans worth Rs 756.28 crore, with Rs 594 crore disbursed. An average project cost of Rs 6.59 lakh underscores the mission’s focus on inclusive, employment-intensive enterprises. Notably, over 77 per cent of sanctioned cases have already been disbursed,” an official spokesman said.

Anchored in an evidence-based design, Mission YUVA is being implemented by the Labour and Employment Department with active support from district administrations. It focuses on structured credit linkage, institutional facilitation and sustained hand-holding to ensure enterprise viability.

According to the officials, a baseline survey covering over 24 lakh households and 1.1 crore individuals identified 5.5 lakh potential entrepreneurs across the Union Territory, providing a strong empirical foundation.

Designed for youth in the age group of 18-59 years, Mission YUVA aims to facilitate the creation of 1.37 lakh enterprises through four focused interventions — creation of Nano Enterprises, establishment of new MSMEs in sunrise and priority sectors, acceleration of existing enterprises, and promotion of neo-innovative enterprises.

Through these integrated interventions, the mission seeks to generate approximately 4.25 lakh employment opportunities over a period of five years.

Guided by the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’, the officials said Jammu and Kashmir is today scripting a new chapter of self-reliance and entrepreneurship.

By placing special emphasis on first-generation entrepreneurs, women particularly those associated with Self-Help Groups and youth from remote and border areas, the mission has normalised entrepreneurship as a respectable and achievable livelihood option, inspiring young people to become job creators rather than job seekers, the spokesman said.

Anchored in evidence from baseline surveys and secondary research, the introduction of the Nano Enterprise model— tailored to the widely preferred Rs 5-6 lakh investment range– has provided a credible, low-risk entry point into enterprise creation, firmly advancing the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat as a lived economic reality across the Union Territory.
